Do you think it'd be illegal for me to drive down to wherever Valve's main office is, and proceed to messily eviscerate everyone who happens to work there? It'd be awful nice if their stupid $70 program would install on my computer. But no, they decided to forgo any sort of QA testing on their install process to save money, I guess. Brilliant copy protection, rendering their own compressed files completely unreadable. Thanks a lot, you jerks.

Wow - thats bizarre! Is there a system requirement that you don't have? I wonder how often this happens

Cross,
I have promised myself I will never buy another Sierra game. The thing took about seven hours to install, and still regularly crashes.

Heh, if this computer can't play Half Life 2... NO computer on Earth can. Sadly, it's not even finishing the install. It's always crapping out on Disk 4 whining that it can't read one of its own damn cab files. This is after returning the original Disk 4 for a replacement, the first time this happened. Grrr. In case anyone's wondering, it's nothing to do with that stupid glitch that won't allow you to finish the install if you don't choose to install CS ource... which is an impossibly stupid error on their part, but not the one I'm encountering. Maybe I should sue them in small claims court, for all my aggravation. They'd never show up for something as trivial as me, so I'd win by default.

Great! Thank you cross! Smack em on the head hard *chuckles* Have you ever installed HL2 yet? I'm not such an avid player, but I was quite impressed with the game when it first came out. But, being a person who isnt into a FPS game, I quickly abandoned it. I loved Grim Fandango (you cant die in this game ...because you're already dead!) and Kings Quest 8 (mask of eternity) I loved neverhood (doo doo doo doo doo dooo) And thief the dark project, was one of the first few games that really was immersive to me. Very cool ... Started out with Tomb Raider and then Diablo... Fortunately or unfortunately, I dont play much games at all nowadays ...

From: Cross Lament Half Life 2 - I feel like killing someone {/QUOTE] You should really take that agression out in a healthy fashion.
Have you tried a good, new first person shooter with Havok 2 enabled objects, killer graphics, and a sequel to a proven blockbuster game yet?
Like, try Half Life 2.
Oh, wait. Damn!

From: Hiro Pendragon Have you tried a good, new first person shooter... I suggest Postal 2. Infinitely satisfying to murder a group of parents protesting outside a software company headquarters about violence in games using only your flammable urine and a match for weapons. What? Yes, I know I'm sick. I never denied it.

You do realize that they were working on HL2 for about 3 hours before they made the final build; which they promptly shipped off to vivendi universal, right? There are bound to be some bugs. Hell the game came without an instruction manual and the CD's were in sleeves!

YES!!!! that's it, my brother introduced it to me, and I will love him till the day I happen to cross that game line and do something nasty to him, with a tesco re-usable bag... Ohhhhhh I remember the Wireplay day's where I used to sit and play Duke Nukem, throwing money at 2d strippers and hiding in corners shooting from afar *sigh* the mammeries....

From: Azreal Rubio Errrm its called lemme see ..... Manhunt .... sick puppies...... Yeah. Or that one. Mweee! Sick games is teh cool! Oh btw. Has anyone seen FlatOut? Man, thats funny. It's a stock car racing game with full ragdoll physics and every single component in the game world is breakable/moveable etc. The bonus games are things like long jump, high jump, ten pin bowling, darts etc... and each involves flinging your driver through the front windscreen as skillfully as you can. Bone crunching good fun.

Im very confused here...
7 hours to install?
4 disks?
I bought my copy from amazon.co.uk and it came as a single DVD, it took about an hour to install and has had no problems.
My PC isn't even that good!
It seems though, to finish the installing and uncompressing of those files, you need to create a Steam account (ryen posted the link) This is just a security measure so that your copy of Half Life 2 has to be registered online. Luckily I already had steam and an account so I wasn't faced with having to download that mid-installation... maybe that is what's causing the problem?
Overall, I found that the uncompressing of the files is what took the longest, loading up HL2 takes a while too, a minute or so.
Hope you guys sort out the problems you're having with it.,.. sounds like you got CD versions, maybe you could return it for a DVD one?

Willow,
Don't bother with it.
Half the problems were due not just to its crashing, but to the stupid and needless hoops it makes you jump through before you can run it.
Damien,
During the downloading part it told me the server was full, but that it would keep trying to connect me. In fact turned out it was sitting there doing nothing - when I rebooted the computer it immediately registered the software.
And yes, mine came on a DVD

You arent the only person in the world who got HL2 that night, infact I believe it was the largest launch for a PC game EVER (even VALVE didnt anticipate that many people buying half-life 2!) So yes, the servers were clogged, not anymore however (infact I was up at 2:50 est and was playing the game 3:05 est ).
