I downloaded it last night, will install it tonight. I'll let you know how it goes.

Doom 3 was a little of a dissapointment, not to mention that I never even finish playing it because I joined SL a few days after it came out.

So is HL2 better than SL? I'll find out this weekend!

Cross,

I was having the same problem when installing my copy of HL2... After about 5 minutes of browsing the messageboards, I found the solution same as you... To get it to install properly you have to also install the CounterStrike Source, which for me is kind of sucky as I have better things to do with my hard disk space! LOL After I did that though, the thing works like a charm!

And yes Valve was seriously backed up with so many people regestering all the time all at once, however the second time I played the game, my registration went right through.

So far I've played through the game for about 4 hours of play and absolutely love it! I just got me the RPG last night so look out youse gunboats!

Good luck!
Artillo

FYI: I am getting 55-65fps w/ HL2 on my PC at 1024x768, specs below:
ASUS P4P800 motherboard
Pentium 4 2.4 GHz 800MHz FSB
1GB PC3200 RAM
GigaByte ATI Radeon 9600pro 128 video card
I use no tweaking/overclocking on my ststem.

and NO you don't need HL1 to play HL2.

Yes, you do. Half-life 1 costs about 80$ over ebay, or you can buy HL1 with HL2 for 200$ USD over steam.

I never played HL1 actually.... perhaps I should get me a copy :P

Doom3 scared the crap out of me, sitting in the dark, headphones on, but yea it was a bit disappointing from a gaming point of view. and I could seriously STRANGLE the UAC Architect who designed those facilities! LOL They make absolutely no sense! HAAA!!!

Arti

And Ryen... DAMNNNN you finished that thing already??

Agreed - I bought HL2 from Steam without HL1, with no problem. HL2 is not a freaking expansion pack :-P

Selador, it was doing something. You arent the only person in the world who got HL2 that night, infact I believe it was the largest launch for a PC game EVER (even VALVE didnt anticipate that many people buying half-life 2!) So yes, the servers were clogged, not anymore however (infact I was up at 2:50 est and was playing the game 3:05 est :D ).

Ryen,

That is no excuse for Valve - they knew about the anticipation on this. How could Microsoft have accurately predicted Halo 2's sales and Valve couldn't on HL2? The main problem is the fucked up copy protection on the CDs - the Sims 2 was plagued with a similar problem. On top of that, requiring the game to be installed using their online system is just stupid and invasive. They fully deserve the backlash they are getting, regardless of the quality of the game. If they stop treating consumers like criminals, then they deserve to have their games purchased. Until then, they are getting exactly what they deserve, though unfortunately, the customers are getting stuck with the problem.

But - the way they did it - there were no bootleg copies out before the release, unlike Doom3.

My bf has a mega state of the art pc and has off and on problems with HL2 locking up. He did some troubleshooting and eliminated hardware as an issue. He has learned to do 'something' quickly to get out of it. He searched all the FAQ thingies available and found nothing relating to what he has happen.

Odd thing is he installed it on the lesser pc and it works fine, just too slow.

Now, until he finishes the game I will be sitting next to him listening to the guns, bombs, screams, seeing those horrid headhoppers, having nightmares later on, because our pcs are side by side. Where did Lamar run off too ......

Well, I just installed HL2 just fine. (that's not a rub-it-in ner ner kinda comment.. just a statement of fact)

And...

OMFG....

what a game! wow wow wow wow wow.

The graphics are far and away the best I've seen. Ever. Those water effects... *drool*

*hugs my HalfLife 2*

*hugs my Geforce 5950 256mb for displaying it with everything on at 1600x1200 at a fantastic framerate* (that WAS a rub-it-in ner ner kinda comment... )

Well, in my case, it's most certainly not the "You must install CS:Source" problem, 'cause I've tried the install both including and not including it. :D

What is happening, unfortunately, is that Disk 4 of 5 is corrupted. The .cab file is partially unreadable and the install craps out and dies horribly. What's really irritating, is that I took the game back to the vendor, they replaced the defective disk, and guess what! The replacement disk has EXACTLY the same damage. Viewing the surface of the disk shows what looks almost like a water stain (they both had this).

Heh, the guy at EB, when I exchanged the disk the first time, claimed it was part of the copy protection. Uh... yeah, right. I guess if it can't be installed, nobody's gonna steal it, right? :D

The Thief series, btw, is the coolest set of games EVAR!!!11! So there. :D

Third time is the charm, apparently. :D

My BF took it back again today whilst I'm here at work, got yet ANOTHER strangely-marked disk #4... but this one managed to install all the way through. Now I just have to wait for this work day to end so's I can play it. Boy this day is dragging its heels. :)

I bought the Silver edition off Steam a couple of days ago. I understand it must be a bitch to have to register the game through steam if you bought it retail along with having to put the DVD in the drive to play. In the long run, having it go through steam makes a lot more sense. You can get automatic updates for the game, not have to worry about losing your cd's since you can download it anytime, and joining in on multiplayer games is cake.

There is a bug though. The audio skips a lot throughout the game. Mostly when there's any type of memory swapping or during an autosave. It happens when big scripted events occur also. It is known and being worked on.

I just finished it today and it's just totally awesome. It has the best graphics and use of physics in any game to date. The loading times suck but I understand with the sheer amount of high quality textures, objects, & models.

That is exactly what I was worried about with running HL2 through STEAM. If I buy the CD retail, cant I play it with the disk without loading it into STEAM? I fully expect to load it later, but is it a "must do" in order to just play the single player?
