If you (Lordfly) choose to explain the purpose of your actions and behaviour I will gladly withdraw my abuse report and comments here. Privately or publicly.

OH! I can field this one! Easy. Lordfly worked hard on a script that he thought would make for some Halloween entertainment, something he figured would amuse people.

Then it didn't work out as it planned, and that got him stressed out.

Then people started yelling at him. That stressed him out too.

Then he got neg rated. That stressed him out.

And he got abuse reports. That stressed him out.

Then people in forums evoked the extermination of the jews to accent a point about LF's zombies, and that stressed him out.

People decribed hanging corpses and tormented elderly in hopes of justifying their own outrageous assaults against LordFly and it stressed him out.

So I think, while Lordfly was frantically looking for his zombies so he can reverse the problem and repair the damage, his less than congenial attitude was due to...you guessed it..the stress.

Is beginning to feel elderly....

Moopf - Sorry if my comments are being misunderstood here, I was genuinely upset by the incident. Maybe I am too old for all this. Back in the last century but one when I was a lad we had to doff our caps and speak when spoken to.

I'm starting to believe that Lordfly was perhaps feeling so frustrated at what had gone wrong, that he appeared to be very rude and inconsiderate. I have constantly repeated that my abuse report was caused by this apparent rudeness and that I will withdraw it if this turns out to be a misunderstanding.

Heh, I have searched and searched for the post from early this year where LF actually calls for a ban on newbs owning guns because he got shot by one while building. I think, however, it's been deleted from our forums in the last purge, or something. See, *anybody* can get ticked off if they are trying to accomplish something in SL and are interfered with by someone else's "fun."

The SL world is large, not everybody knows everyone now, and people pay a lot more for land and other things in SL. Consequently, it's taken a lot more seriously. Them's the rules nowadays.

Lordfly, I'm sorry things did not go as planned.

I think this is a great Halloween treat. :D Attack of the Green Cube Zombies, Dawn of the Dead Green Cubes. I'm laughing my ass off. People just need to realize that sometimes it's the unexpected that make life fun and interesting.

goddamn i'm sorry i missed all the fun. this thread is so great. it's the greatest great thread ever. not only is it the source of a million quotes that will keep me in a good mood for years but i can use it as a checklist of people i want to hang out with and people i never want to see in a million years even in photographs. :D

just to be balanced i guess i got to flame Lordfly a lil bit. uh...green cubes? boring. if people are going to accuse you of raping their puppies then next time make the Nudgin' Zombies 10 meters tall with barbed wire enshrouded naughty bits.

new improved Zombies, now with PuppyHump(tm) action!

oh, and sounds like some people want less multiplayer in their multiplayer game. the horror....you might meet someone else and they might *gulp* affect you. they already have single player SL, it's called a Barbie doll and a box of legos. go play that.

LOL! This was my biggest complaint. When LF told me he made zombies, I was getting excited about watching undead humans lumbering about with arms outstreched moaning "braaaains".

Instead I got lime jello! Version 2.0 had better have a 90% increase in rotting flesh!

***dials the phone to have Pete rez up a colony of ants****

hehe, and you guys think Zombies are bad.....

Way Cool!! Can we make them GIANT RADIOACTIVE ANTS? Bring them over to Furu first - let the little babies run barefoot through my garden!

I'd ask LF to write the script, but I think he needs a bottle of JD & a hug tonight.

Lordfly apologized. That's good enough for me, but don't get all high and mighty saying that people are 'whiners' and 'crybabies' for being upset. This script prevented people from playing the game the way they like to play it. Trying to justify people as 'greedy' or 'not having a sense of humor' is bullshit. My av got attacked by one of those zombie blobs. I deleted the cubes -- repeatedly. More just kept falling out of the sky and I was genuinely pissed. I had people coming to an event in 15 minutes.

I don't want Lordfly severely punished for his mistake because it was a mistake, but just because you know how to script doesn't mean you should make things that will screw up other people's gameplay. That's hacker logic. Gee, I want to make an e-mail virus to show how cool I am to my friends. You people make it sound like it's your right to do whatever you want just because you can. Get a conscience already.

I have sent an e-mail to LL including the following. Sorry if I have upset some of you

Having read large numbers of posts on the SL forum regarding Lordfly Didgeridoo's zombie boxes, I am happy to let you know that I accept that any abuse was unintentional and I wish to withdraw my complaint.

Lordfly is fine with me, it just got a little out of hand I guess. Hard to predict sometimes, like Pete's ants were. Shouldn't make you stop, but I understand if it dampens your enthusiasm lately.

Of course, maybe if they all said 'For Sale' they'd be ok? har har.

Ooh! Ooh!

I'm going to make a self-replicating army of zombie-hunters and let them loose!!!

Lordfly, do you have a captured zombie I can study to find their weaknesses, to better equip my mutant troops?

Actually, I was going to release Red-Zombie-Hunters and Blue-Zombie-Hunters that self-annihilate when they get too close to each other. :)

Ooh! No... Just one type of Zombie-Hunter, but they go BOOM if there are ever three within range of each other...

No.. No... Red AND Blues that go BOOM with three or more in one spot! Yeah!

heheh Actually. I do have a real plan for a hunter-bot, but if it works right, no one will ever know it was there.

Well I am not ashamed that I reported this as an abuse, returned over 30 cubes and banned you from my land.

I might have dealt with it differently if you had been apologetic but you didn't even try. You were there in front of me and just carried on 'screaming' something like "where the hell are they all?" "I can't find them"

If you (Lordfly) choose to explain the purpose of your actions and behaviour I will gladly withdraw my abuse report and comments here. Privately or publicly.

Ah, back from work.

Cliffy, two things.

1) I was terse with you because at the point of you summoning me it was probably the 6th time today, coupled with several times last night, with me running around trying to find my zombie prims. I was trying to find people to help me, and I was busy trying to get more sensors. I was stressed out and unhappy and generally grumpy. I'm normally not like that.

2) Let me explain my intentions for my zombies.

Some of the complainers had it right; it WAS a deliberate release. It was an intended thing to do around halloween, to give the world some spice and danger during the weekend.

HOWEVER. I grossly misunderstood the social response to them.

The intent for the zombies was to cause a mild amount of humor and calamity. I mean, ZOMBIES! It's the classic bad movie plot: zombies attack a club, club goers arm themselves to the teeth, fight their way out of the club, and eventually save the world.

The intent was to have groups of heavily-armed people scripting zombie-fighting guns and creatures, unleashing their creations against the mindless undead cubes, spreading the message on how to combat the vile creations.

Of course, that didn't work at all. No one thought to shoot them, push them, or mangle them, and let them multiply over and over and over again.

Basically I didn't understand how people react to unexpected things that would have "ruined" their "gaming experience". Sorry.

I would, however, like to thank the folks that stuck up for me... I probably don't deserve it, but it's a wonderful gesture of goodwill regardless. Thank you.

OK, I'm _really_ pissed, I want to know why I haven't been attacked! Is this some form of discrimination that is programmed into the Zombies? Is it because I have BO? Or perhaps because I am a reformed Land Baron? Why or why, where have I gone wrong?

Loryfly, personally I thank you for bringing some spontaneity to the game!

If people are upset by the Zombies perhaps they shouldn't be playing this game, if they want "serious" there is the game "Stock Market".

/me has a new tag line (soon a I find the pref in this new forumness):
Jack Digeridoo
"Dude we're playing dolls don't talk about acting like an adult."

Thanks Jack! :)

Lordfly: I meant to find you in-game or post to tell you to talk to Stellar before you released these things... she *still* gets complaints about the old slime drones. Sorry I didn't have the chance to get to you. Also very sorry I missed it. I very much need to create an Ash AV complete with a good scatter/shotgun.

Hamstershire Biggles: Wow, haven't even met you and I already like you just for the name. I can't quite get my mind around 'Hamstershire Biggles and his boom-stick' just doesn't quite work :) Welcome to SL, sorry you missed the Beta days. /me agrees with Ingrid; can't wait to read more :)

Cliffy: TP=Toilet Paper; to toss rolls of same over someones house to 'decorate' it. Not quite Polite and Civilized but hardly abusive either.

L8r,
UU

(who cant wait for Attack of the Zombie Prims v2.0, with new improved dimpled, bent, twisted, advance cut Zombie Prims!)

P.S. Lordfly: make sure your next zombies can die with the default popgun, since we *all* have it now.

Thanks Lordfly for clarifying, as you will see from my earlier post I have asked LL to withdraw my complaint already, due to the overwhelming feeling I got from posters that I was over-reacting.

I accept your reasoned explanations for your 'terseness' .

I do however feel that some of the postings from others have been unfair:

The following are taken from the community standards at:

From: someone
Assault
Most areas in Second Life are identified as Safe. Assault in Second Life means: shooting, pushing, or shoving another Resident in a Safe Area (see Global Standards below); creating or using scripted objects which singularly or persistently target another Resident in a manner which prevents their enjoyment of Second Life

Disturbing the Peace
Every Resident has a right to live their Second Life. Disrupting scheduled events, repeated transmission of undesired advertising content, the use of repetitive sounds, following or self-spawning items, or other objects that intentionally slow server performance or inhibit another Resident's ability to enjoy Second Life are examples of Disturbing the Peace.

Context is the keyword in this issue.

I actually never encountered such zombies.. yet.
But.. let's suppose...

- I'm exploring around or going someplace and get jumped by green boxes.
I'm mildy amused and just teleport myself somewhere else.

- I'm hosting an event, and green boxes attack me.
I get annoyed and probably do a abuse report.

- I'm creating a script that rezzes green boxes for fun and something goes wrong.
I'm completly stressed out an trying to undo any harm done.

Now, i live on a country (Portugal) where we don't even celebrate halloween. But i get the spirit.

And i understand that LordFly intentions where to amuse people.

He only failed in designing the zombies.
The main interaction on SL is Touch, not shooting.

If the boxes/zombies died on touch.. :rolleyes:

LF: I never saw the green buggers but I totally support you for making the effort to do something fun for the community. I think it was a really great idea. Don't let the fact that it didn't work out perfectly get you down.

Personally, I'd love to see new wandering autonomous creations. Having worked on several robotics projects in the past, I know SL provides an excellent environment for that sort of thing. Phillip even talked about this in his blog a while back.

Anyway, IMHO, it's the thought that counts.

You know, you really have to wonder about a guy who quote -himself- in his sig file...

Anyway, Lordy, if you made any mistake it was that you figured most people would read the forums and word would get arround. If there was a bit more warning then I'm sure it would have gone ok.

Damn, that's beautiful! If I had an island, I'd be bribing you to let zombies loose there.

As it is, I'll settle for trying to massacre any strays that might be on the loose.

/me puts on some bad leathers, loads up the Seburos, hops in the Ornithopter, and tells the Finder to look for "Zombie"

Shouldnt be too hard to make a zombie killer with an automatic targetter.
CODE

float range = 32;
string zombieName = "Zombie";

default {
state_entry() {
llSensorRepeat(zombieName,"",SCRIPTED,range,PI,15);
}

// Sensor for anything matching 'zombie'
sensor (int number) {
integer i;
for(i=0; i < number; i++) {
vector angle = llVecNorm(llDetectedPos(i) - llGetPos() + llDetectedVel(i));
llRezObject("largebullet",llGetPos() + (angle*3),angle*64,zero_rotation,0);
}
}
}

That should do it. (Dont make any guaruntees or anything, and make sure your bullets are both reasonably large (the targetter wont be perfect - give it some room), and that they clean themselves up.)

Leave a couple of those around in 'infected' areas, and they should wipe them out when they come in sensor range. (I would set a range under 32m, since the target may move around faster than llDetectedVel can compensate. The bullets will move at 64m/sec, which should be enough to kill the critters without causing physics issues)

Cant guaruntee it works (I'm writing this while waiting for the guild wars beta to download), but it should be a fair start.

Remember, it's amusing stunts like this, even when they go wrong, that everyone will remember in years to come. Not the whiners.
