Do you understand at all Bruno? It is an additional chance. It is composed of randomly selected residents who have the option of opting out. Prior to the review board, if LL deemed to ban someone, they were banned. Again, 20 people have EVER been permabanned, hardly an epidemic or oppressive. They added another chance with this system. It's also important to note that the panel still does not have the final word. They make a recommendation based upon the incident and the offender's disciplinary record.

Nolan, I see your point that technically it is another chance but I hardly see it as due process. That is my point. From my posts I have tried to make it clear that I believe in punishment matching the degree of severity with threats on a person being worthy of expulsion -- panel or no panel.

It helps that you added the panel only makes a recommendation.

I think the fundamental division we face here is that some want SL's disciplinary system to mirror that of the real world, i.e., invoking phrases like "due process" and the like. I just don't see it. This has been said many times before, but this is not RL. There is no due process, and I don't think there should be. The Lindens have investigative powers far beyond that of the real world judicial system. They can call up any chat log, general or IM. They can see who shot the first shot, who used their push weapon, and who didn't. Imagine if judges could do that in RL. Would sure save alot of time for them, not having to try and decipher who is lying and who isn't just based on hearsay. This is why I trust LL with their decisions, I just wish they would be a little harsher on repeat offenders.

Then there is the paradox of "this is not RL, no one can break your bones or kill you here". Yet we are met with the want for a judicial system reflecting that of RL. If the crimes don't mirror RL crimes, why then should the judicial system?

Hi Neal.

While I think it would be great if we had such tools, I don't expect to see them anytime soon. A lot of these things have been suggested before and not come to fruition yet. The abilty to see who in particular is placing items on ones parcel coming with 1.6 is a step in that direction.

The problem I see, especially with cases like the one that touched off this debate, is alt accounts. A system such as you are suggesting does not address this issue, which is why I am glad LL is pondering just how to handle such situations. Personally I think they should extend the suspensions to alternate accounts. If the dummies who pull stunts like this had to face their friend's or loved one's ire because they got their accounts suspended as well, it might very well have a real impact on future behavior and the propensity to hide behind alts.

A couple years back, my room mate's son lived with us. I introduced him to Neverwinter Nights, the online component - and at one point he acted like a jerk and got our IP blocked, hence I was unable to play anymore. I was very unhappy with him, and let him know that i was, in no uncertain terms. When I convinced the person who was running that particular NWN server to unblock us, my roomie's son behaved, most likely because he didn't want me and his dad lecturing him anymore.

Hi Nolan. Thanks for your comments. I think that a system where you can 'mute' certain avatars and all their objects/scripts would be highly effective regardless of whether the person has alts. You can just mute any of their troublesome alts as well, if you encounter them. At $9.95US a pop (is that correct?), I don't think they will have that many.

Your point about blocking all accounts from a particular Credit Card number is interesting. It might be good for the mute-avator function if you can globally mute all the alts connected to their card as well. I don't think it would be necessary (given what I said above) but it may be an improvement. On the other hand, residents might be able to use this feature to figure out who people's alts are. If I mute John's avatar and all his objects - and suddenly my girlfriend disappears as well... it will not be good for any of the three of us :) So, perhaps no on the CC-wide avatar-mutes after all.

As for the current system, I'm not 100% certain about banning Credit Numbers but I am inclined to agree with you. At first I was picturing scenarios where you might have a teenage younger brother on his parents' credit card who gets banned in SL and then inadvertently gets his older brother banned too :) But then I remembered that SL residents are all legally meant to be adults :) So perhaps we should not be making allowances for the non-adults that are here? On the other hand, you do get 18+ adult family-members who might cause trouble for each other while still using the same credit card number.

I wonder how many alts in SL on the one credit card are genuinely different people and how many just belong to the one? I'm guessing that in the majority of cases the alts would belong to the one person. So then you have to decide if it would be worth punishing the minority in exchange for the benefits of more alt-control. I don't know.

LL should not half to babysit every one of our actions. And when they dont give you your way, they should not half to Be forced to waist even more time on reading repeat forms like this.
when we get new features, we complain about bugs,
when they focus on bugs, we complain about not getting new features,
But in ether situation,
we complain that we do not want a government, but rather total freedom,
and complain that the law is not enforced relentless and heartlessly.

also,
By what Im understanding you seem to think people who "break the SL law" should be banned relentlessly.

No one is forced 'waist' their time here. No one points a gun to your head and makes you read this. Trying to compare the forums with having someone plant signs designed to hurt your feelings and make you feel unwanted in the world is asinine... at best.

I think you're stretching the limits on the word 'understanding', since you seem to have completely missed my point. But as that doesn't appear to have been your real interest here, no worries.

I'd tell you what you should do, but I suspect that would be against the rules of the forums. Oh well, I'll leave it up to your healthy imagination... you know, the same way you're imagining that you know what I think, why I'm interested in this, or what is motivating me.

p.s.: Since we're being all friendly and the like -- here's a link that you might benefit from spending some time at: http://www.m-w.com. Enjoy!

If I missed your point please clarify, all I see is you saying " Im angry about something someone did and think that LL should in some way be forced to conform to my method of so called justice."
But if that is wrong, please help me understand what in fact you are truly saying.

Change does not come in these games by bitching alone. Game companies only understand we (the paying customer) mean business when we hit them in the wallet.

So 2 things here.
1. You think something needs a change and are willing to take any actions possable to force that change.
2. You think sl is to be treated as any other "game"

From: someone
First and foremost because things get buried here quickly and this is something that should remain on top of discussion

So what makes this thread more important than any other issue that should not be overlooked?
So your idea is more important than any other, LL should do things YOUR way.....

Also is it just me or have posts vanashed?
I seem to recall one in here saying something like "tollarant? they lost there respect when they chose to disrespect others unprevoked".
How do you know they were not prevoked? You dont know the full story. You could not possably know unless you actually ARE the partie(s) the story is about.

And finnaly, your reply to me explains nothing at all, It seems to exist only for arguing and nothing more.
Including your cracks about spelling. That has nothing to do with the issue "if there really is one."

Despite the comments of bored pot-stirrers like yourself, it remains that expecting Linden Labs to do more than 'slap the wrists' of people who do things such as this is not an unreasonable expectation.

Add to this the simple reality that, for every person like myself, who will actually pipe up and say something, there are others who will simply walk away. This is such a common reality in service markets that there is a name for the behavior, 'The 2% Rule'.

But let me be blunt, I didn't post to gain your approval. I didn't post to gain anyone's approval. I posted (and emailed, and faxed) because this is one of several avenues that Linden Labs has set up as (among other things) a communication vehicle with their paying and playing community. If you dislike what you read under my name, teach yourself how to avoid it, I assure you, I'll lose no sleep over it.

As to the rest, my point is very clearly spelled out in the initial post. If all you got out of it was 'you think everyone should just do it your way', I suggest you take up recurrent literacy training.

Aside to Talen: I never serve the ball, but I have absolutely no problem returning it. If you have issue with that, pick up my mortgage and we'll discuss the possibility that your snide comments (tellingly similar to that which you're attempting to accuse me) should hold meaning here, in my world. Until then...
