Luna -- on its way out?

When the Luna mall opened, the concept of a "mall" in SL was in its infancy. If I recall, there was only one or two "megamalls", not including Avatar Central. Aqua was a great shopping area; if you needed stuff, you went to Aqua.

So when Luna came in, it was good timing; it gave tons of entreapaneurs the chance to see what it's like living in a communal capitalism atmosphere, and gave a ton of other people great ideas on what to do with their land.

I think, however, that Luna's time has come and gone.

I flew over there last night, and I gotta tell ya, it looks like a ghost town.

The anchor stores are half empty, the medium stores are mostly deserted... heck, even some of the little kiosks are boarded up with landmarks to go elsewhere.

I think that with the glut of malls everywhere in the world, the time of Luna has come and gone.

So what should we do with it now?

I say turn it into another Linden experiment. Something to do with zoning regulations. Maybe a double-prim residential sim, on the outskirts of Nova Albion? That'd be neat.

Interesting idea, especially regarding the zoning experiment. I love Luna, but tbh, rarely go there these days.

Or, a XXX club and bath house would do equally well. :p

On a related note... Aqua is still a great place to shop! :)

I've had a constant presence in Luna since it opened, and have been sales tracking for about 3/4 of that time (roughly 10 months).

In this period of time, out of the locations that have been in constant presence since implementing my vendors:

Luna: 617 sales, 30.74%
Lusk: 103 sales, 5.02%
Mocha: 912 sales, 45.95%

Personally, I wouldn't say it's dead. It doesn't have the attraction of other malls, I suppose, as there are no events or such to draw in dwell. It's a place where people go, shop, and go on about their business. This is just my own experience, of course, but I still see regular sales there.

The Lindens have said several times that the things they do like LindenWorld, Nova Albion, and Luna are just them trying to show residents how to do it themselves.

What SL needs is a place to play TRINGO; MEGATRINGO; universal take over a sim TRINGO.

Maybe not.

Just because Luna is still popular doesn't mean that its usefulness hasn't been spent.

Luna mall raffles have long since been unfairly diveed out, and there are plenty of places to sell your stuff.

Let's find another use for Luna.

I think it's especially quiet since it's no longer a Top Pick. I sell a few things from my kiosk but probably not nearly in the same amounts as someone who had the same stall 6 months ago.

It is very, very empty. Great looking place though.

Another point for re-thinking Luna's usage is that it's been one of Char's projects, and she is switching over to work on the SL kid grid. Maybe the next Linden who comes in to manage it might have a better (or new) idea regarding what to do with it. I'm all for some more zoning experiments in SL.

It's true that since we launched Luna about a year ago, several large scale malls have sprung up. Here's one possibility: When the current leases are up, Linden sells Luna as a whole sim along with the buildings. Perhaps if it were run by a resident or group of residents, there would be more action there. Other ideas?

Sorry about that. I'm just sort of wasting the space in my anchor store. I've got two vendors and the rest of the space is empty.

If anyone's interested in having a vendor, free of charge, drop me a line. That is, if that's cool with the Lindens.

Eh, but if it's just sold as a "mall" sim, it'll turn into just that; a Mall. A mall that, like most others, offers shopkeepers zero guarantee that their stuff won't be returned tomorrow.

Why not make it another experiment and see if it works?
(psst... zoning :) )

Without a doubt, if Luna was given over to resident control I would no longer bother having vendors there.

Why not make Luna a huge organized freebie area where members can put out free items for other members, including inventory items that we want to give away rather than delete.

Or make Luna an inventory storage area, like inventory storage lockers for rent.

I love that idea Katy. Luna could be the new Avatar Central, but offering only free stuff

I definetely hope it stays in some capacity. It's a beautiful mall.

I can't believe I just said that about a mall.

Don't turn Luna into a Free Anything.. Luna needs to be the Future Stock Market Trading Floor for Second Life. A place where players can buy/sell rare objects/scripts or something of value as a commodity.

Whatever it may be, Luna's future should be as a Financial Center for SL....
