Truckers rarely stop for anyone, but I have seen them stop for a pretty girl. It's a sad thing when only pretty people can get help. Pretty girls in particular.

Ok subject degraded...initial subject I want to believe that humans are inherantly good but humans keep mucking it up by doing crappy things.

Ohh an my real dad, just found out about him, was a trucker too. Decent guy. Just saying that my youthful (as in 16 year old) preconcieved notions of truckers was not correct though one trucker commited a heinous crime I cannot hold say that all truckers are predisposed to commit the same acts.

How about believing that humans are inherently human and trying to make the best of that and help others do so as well?

It's funny that I feel such hope reading about dolphins coming to the rescue of the lifeguards. Dolphins have a long and storied history of coming to the aid of humans in need. You would think after the 1,000 oil spill, or a few nuclear subs sinking to the bottom, that they would do their very best to push us in front of any nearby sharks. They are a truly wonderful, kind, and family-oriented species and perhaps equal or exceed our intelligence. And to think that if things continue as is, we will destroy them as well as ourselves. Shame on us!

Dolphins know man!!! Ever heard that song by Nirvana? "It's ok to eat fish cause they dont have any feeeeliliiiings" Well dolphins know we arent fish, man, so they feel bad for us, cause they know we have feelings, ya know.

So how are we to let people know what dolphins know already? We should play that song for everyone.

We could definitely take a lesson from the dolphins.

Even dolphins can behave badly.

From: someone

(from link above)
"In one attack, three bottlenose dolphins chased a harbor porpoise, rammed their beaks into it and tossed it into the air. The porpoise died. When researchers examined the dead animal, they found massive twisting injuries, with blubber and muscles ripped from the bones."

Tossed into the air? Muscles ripped from the bones?
Note they weren't hunting for food here. This was playtime.

My dad theorised that the porpoise earned his beating by "being a smartass" but that didn't make me feel any better.

Yes, I have said before and will say again...this is a test and only a test. We have no clue what we are or what our future holds. We try though and that has to count for something. This discussion in and of itself proves that we care. Thank you for flashing the reality beam Akuma :D

Alright David,
great thread, I'm with ya here.

Now....

Could we maybe "evolve" this thread into some suggestions or enlightenment to help us live more harmoniuosly sp? with each other?

Surely we can complain till Armageddon!!? But if we belive in ourselves and one another can we prevent our downfall or is it inevitable?!

The true nature and power of ones inner self is a subject rarely touch up and maybe we need to look "into" it further?!!!

They were probably a local gang of young thug-dolphins protecting thier turf. Dolphins could very well have a criminal element in thier society. Or maybe the porpoise had been threatening the dolphin's young? We all know those porpoises are trouble man..badass...

I am praying for one of those 'planet killer' meteors to come our way, and wipe out all life except for single celled organisms, so the planet can start over.

I don't believe it's inevitable.

So ok, here's some suggestions for little things everyone can do to help the world and each other. Recycle. Repair stuff rather than just throwing it out and buying new stuff. Grow your own veggies. Drive less. Buy from local producers. Compost leftovers or give them to the dog/cat/birds. Smile. Be polite to the person behind the counter. Volunteer for causes you believe in. Vote. Put a 'no junk mail or flyers' note on your mailbox. Write to your political representatives about stuff that concerns you. Also, when a politician/public figure does something you think is good, write and thank/congratulate them, there are people out there who try and sometimes they don't get alot of positive feedback. Don't invest in companies that make weapons or that have poor environmental or labour records. Mulch your lawn clippings and use them as fertilizer rather than tossing them out. Don't let advertisers make you think that you have to buy stuff you've never heard of before in order to be happy. Spend time with your friends and family. Spend time with people who's culture is unfamiliar to you, whether that be rednecks, anarchists, arabs, native americans or whoever, try to see their point of view. Try not to have more than a couple kids, it's getting kind of crowded on this planet. Be kind to humans and dolphins.

Anybody got anymore suggestions?

Wiggle, have you been reading books by Florida Author Tim Dorsey? Florida Roadkill, Hammerhead Ranch Motel and Orange Crush - In the Hammerhead Ranch Motel the main character Serge beats the hell out of a guy who throws a beer bottle at a dolphin.

Regarding the nature of mankind:

Every generation has its folly - some idea, a project, or a fantasy, which it buys into, spurred on either by greed, adrenilin, stupidity or the force of imitation (the lemming factor).

Failing in these, mankind has some insanity, which seems to be motivated by political or religious causes. Alexander "the Great" and Genghis Khan, the Caesars, Attila the Hun, Napoleon, Hitler and various others all made their historical mark upon the earth by shedding the blood of other human beings.

At the Temple of Solomon, "men rode in blood up to their knees and bridle reins." Sited by a triumphant eyewitness to this spectical, "It was a just and splendid judgment of God that this place should be filled with the blood of the unbelievers, since it had suffered so long from their blasphemies."

I enjoy reading history - funny how you can read about something your entire life and it turns out to be one instance where the points made are driven home and you recoginze their significance. That moment for me was, oddly enough, watching the movie "The Gangs of New York". Far enough in the past to be historical, close enough to the present to be disturbing.

It was the protrayal of this historical brutality that made me realize that things have changed and for the better. We have difficulty seeing this - particularly when we are bombarded with brutality in war torn countries and the brutality in our own streets and unfortunately sometimes even in our own homes.

Yes - mankind has a lot of problems (just ask FOX news - oh wait, better check with CNN). Nevertheless, we are a far less brutal lot than we were 2000 years ago or even 200 years ago. Provided we don't nuke ourselves into the stoneage - I still hold high hopes for what mankind can become.
