David and all... that's why I am an Extropian. www.extropy.orgExcerpt from http://www.extropy.org/principles.htm : From: someone The Principles of Extropy in Brief Perpetual Progress Extropy means seeking more intelligence, wisdom, and effectiveness, an open-ended lifespan, and the removal of political, cultural, biological, and psychological limits to continuing development. Perpetually overcoming constraints on our progress and possibilities as individuals, as organizations, and as a species. Growing in healthy directions without bound. Self-Transformation Extropy means affirming continual ethical, intellectual, and physical self-improvement, through critical and creative thinking, perpetual learning, personal responsibility, proactivity, and experimentation. Using technology — in the widest sense to seek physiological and neurological augmentation along with emotional and psychological refinement. Practical Optimism Extropy means fueling action with positive expectations – individuals and organizations being tirelessly proactive. Adopting a rational, action-based optimism or "proaction", in place of both blind faith and stagnant pessimism. Intelligent Technology Extropy means designing and managing technologies not as ends in themselves but as effective means for improving life. Applying science and technology creatively and courageously to transcend "natural" but harmful, confining qualities derived from our biological heritage, culture, and environment. Open Society Extropy means supporting social orders that foster freedom of communication, freedom of action, experimentation, innovation, questioning, and learning. Opposing authoritarian social control and unnecessary hierarchy and favoring the rule of law and decentralization of power and responsibility. Preferring bargaining over battling, exchange over extortion, and communication over compulsion. Openness to improvement rather than a static utopia. Extropia ("ever-receding stretch goals for society" over utopia ("no place" . Self-Direction Extropy means valuing independent thinking, individual freedom, personal responsibility, self-direction, self-respect, and a parallel respect for others. Rational Thinking Extropy means favoring reason over blind faith and questioning over dogma. It means understanding, experimenting, learning, challenging, and innovating rather than clinging to beliefs.

You might say that different areas bred different types of people with different cultures and the more violent ones tend to take over through war. All of the cultures that were respectfull of nature and peacfull probably got trampled by the more warlike.

From: Wiggle Biggles Thanks for resorting to trying to degrade me.
All I'm saying is that I do what I can in what I think is good and right and you try to say that I put myself above others and think we should just start killing each other.
Can you argue the out of control population growth?
Do you deny getting food for yourself before helping others?
Yes, our population is out of control and we are self serving.
Maybe you should start trying to argue the point instead of trying to attack me personally. Never tried to degrade you I was only asking questions in order to better understand your point. Yes the human population is growing at a fast rate. Your second question is too odd to answer as I get my food from my garden and the butcher, I do not believe that getting food and helping others are conflicting interests. I agree with you that some are self serving but I do not believe that these acts are natural as some disprove the self serving need you speak of. The braincell thing was directed at myself and not you. I was not attacking I was asking based on what I read. I suppose questions are attacks though.

From: Akuma Withnail Gee, I thought we were having a thread about how nice it would be if humanity collectively tried to make the world a better place rather than constantly fighting amongst ourselves. I don't see how this sort of personal attack contributes constructively to the conversation.
Then again, perhaps it serves to illustrate the point. How is that a personal attack...please. Don't look for drama. I was simply asking questions. There was no personal attack involved. By the way I agreed with his first sentiment so it is not like I am attacking everything he says.

Perhaps you should re-read your post however and try and understand how it could be perceived as an attack by both myself and Wiggles.

I think Wiggles knows that I am not attacking him...more forcing him to prove his hypothesis. If he does not then I appologize for being harsh.

I also hope you realise, Ishtar, that I am not a jerk even though I dont have an idealistic view of the world.
I believe overall that the human race is out of control, but that doesnt mean I dont do my part to make things better anyway.
I'm pretty sick at how people just stand around while others are in need or are in trouble. I'm the guy that that takes action when I see someone in trouble instead of just standing around waiting for someone else to do it. I'm the guy that crawls under peoples hoods to help them start their car or pull them out of the sand at the beach or push their stalled car off of the freeway.
I still think we are "going to hell in a handbasket" but I do what I can.

I'd swallow the pill much easier if you didn't make it sound like you were the only person on earth doing deeds benificial to the species. Other folks are working on it as well. I'm proud of you for being a good samaritan but don't discount by exclusion those who are fighting for human enlightenment everyday. That is all I ask. The world is not inherantly evil. Most people think about the plight of their neighbors.
ps
I do not think you are a jerk. Maybe it is just that I do not understand your manner of relaying your thoughts.

From: Chip Midnight If we have to depend on the intelligence of the species we're definitely doomed. That grilled cheese sandwich with the supposed image of the virgin mary on it just sold for $28,000 Not doomed...I just needed it to complete my collection....my favorite is my elvis image in a screen door. Skinny elvis not fat elvis

I really must learn not to immediately post a follow-on to a posting at the bottom of the page without checking whether there are more pages in the thread.

I do not think you are a jerk. Maybe it is just that I do not understand your manner of relaying your thoughts. I find that many people dont understand my manner for relaying my thoughts and I really dont know what to do about it, so I just stick to it untill we work something out. Part of the problem is the lack of actuall interaction that you would normally get in face to face discussions compared to what there is on these messageboards. No, I dont think I am the only good samaritan, but I know that not enough people are. Stop and watch someone in need sometime and you will see how many people dont act, they just go on by hoping someone else will take care of it. This is a fact or noone would be sitting on the side of the road watching people pass them by. No people arent inherantly evil, but their apathy in situations where they could easily lend a hand or do the right thing is not a good thing either. EDIT: As an add to people not helping others in times of immediate need... There was a lady that was recently abducted from a parking garage with many other people right there and noone lifted a finger or even called out to her to help. She just kept running untill the car caught up to her and they shoved her inside. Read here...This is what I am talking about. To much of this going on today. http://www.kron4.com/Global/story.asp?S=2555442

Though that has little to do with a basketball player kicking the shit out of a fan who threw a beer. I do agree based on the fact that a police officer told me to never yell rape only yell fire. People respond to fire but rarely stop for a rape or kidnapping. This does not make the beating any more understandable.

From: someone Wiggle Biggles Since it is a few posts up now, read this as an example of what I mean. It's called group psychology. Most times people act differently on thier own then when around others. I believe we have our own capitalist society to help with this situation. Make money, screw the world!!! We're trained from day one!!! Lawyers don't help. How many people won't act for fear of being sued later. "Captain Save-A-Ho" complex. A bouncer freind of mine saw a girl litterally getting her ass kicked in a parking garage. Great kid, went to help, got stole on by the guy, nice shinner, police show, and the girl says he attacked her boyfriend! That's where all your people are that are whatching these events unfold in front of them. How many times does the media villify some after they've done a good deed? It's extremely sad that we don't just help each other as a whole, but unfortunately, we're not being "trained" that way.
