Democracy: How Much Is A Landslide?

Washington state still hasn't certified the governor's race, with the current vote count at a paltry 48 vote difference.
Ohio has officially certified its Presidential election results giving Bush a 119,000 vote lead over Kerry, from a projected 135,000 vote lead.
Nationwide, the margin is Bush/Kerry 51/48 %

So in the most fiercely partisan election ever, Bush claimed a landslide - "a mandate" and "political capitol" that he "intended to spend". *coughs*

I'm curious... what do you all think a landslide victory is?

The whole "mandate" thing is just laughable... especially hearing Bush supporters claim he won by the largest margin in history. Do people not read? Is simple math beyond them? They may as well just point to themselves and say "Hi, I'm stupid!" instead. At least that would actually be true! Bush won by the smallest margin for an incumbent in history, and the smallest margin for any presidential election since Truman in 1948. Even if he had won by a landslide the whole "mandate" thing would still be arrogance incarnate.

...as people who specialize in manipulating democratic processes get better and better at it, the elections are going to end up closer and closer to being nearly 50-50.

The candidates platforms are going to end up nearly the same with a few quirky disagreements so they can look like they actually stand for something.

Just branding and name-recognition, really.

Landslide margins correlate directly to penis sizes. A 3% margin of victory is like a 3 inch penis. Not really anything to write home about and frankly, while you have a penis, it's not one anyone is envious of.

Now, if you have a 12 inch penis (or a 12% margin of victory) that is pretty damn impressive. You don't even need to tell people about having a mandate. You will have mandates lined up around the block!
