From: Osprey Therian I don't think anyone lurks to be better able to conform to prevailing opinions on the forum. As you say, it's a matter of personality differences, but for lurkers such as I the analogy might be reading a guidebook about the planet ZZ instead of going there unprepared and learning the hard way that wearing a hat is considered a deadly insult, or complimenting a cook on a delicious dish is a miserable faux pas. True. coco

From: Dianne Mechanique To go completely *off* topic, I have to say that this is yet another reasoned, civil and totally cool post by Enbran and I am always amazed at his calm and thoughtful grasp of the essentials, and the maturity and resonableness of his approach. He single-handedly destroys my bias against people under 25 with every word he posts. I am also a member of the Enanbran fan club. ~Ulrika~

I lurked. I lurked for a long time. I did it so I could get a feel for what was going on. I also was learning in SL itself so I felt that I was uninformed. In the begining I just read what others said, and then went and learned what the truth was my self. Now that I know most of what is going on, I feel that I can post and make a valid point easier.

I don't know about lurking, but I know there was a long time between my first forum post (which was to request First Land) and my second forum post, which was an event announcement. In fact, if you hadn't had to request First Land in the forums, I would never have known the forums existed! I'm wondering if that is a factor in a reduction of new residents participating here.

Ironically, my first post was to report client drops... something that continues to plague me after every patch. I think I my second post about about hair. (chuckle)
Lurking before posting is a generall recognized and oft supported piece of netiquette, though granted it has become passe' in this day of 'validate me' forum posters.
There are a number of forums that require you to lurk before allowing you to post. Some that directly suggest you do so just to keep yourself from burning through your 'new person' credit before you realise you're stirring up a hornet's nest of invective with the general populace.
As much as some hate to admit it, social groups have pecking orders. And those who try to force themselves up the chain invariably discover just how strong the conformity machine can be, and how ugly.
To answer the question, I only lurked about a week or just shy of it. On the other hand, I've over 20 years of online interaction under the belt and let's just say there isn't much I haven't seen between seeding forums, modding them and hosting them... I didn't anticipate this place being that much different and as it turns out, I was right.
I do love being right. (grin)

From: Katiahnya Muromachi I lurk because.. well, because you people scare the shit out of me. I think there is a lot of merit to this comment. Some people here are really brutal and dont really realize it because they are too much into the "game" of winning the forums. I never feel threatened, but I have lost enthusiasm for posting here because it seems like the pay back for my effort is either to be ignored or insulted. This is not always the case, of course, but a few incidents have been heavy enough to sour my desire to post. Im not calling anyone out and its not really that serious of an issue, but it I think it is pretty intimidating to take the step from lurker to poster. Take a look at the current active users on the main index, plenty of lurkers online most of the time.

I seem to be a lurk master, I don't have a very high post count to begin with and The first post I can find of mine is from December of last year and I joined April 2004. I only post when I have something important to say or think I can make people laugh. I mainly watch the springeresque forum baqttles and laugh.

From: Katja Marlowe Your statement doesn't make sense though. How could you have an INFORMED opinion if you were "moreover, I WAS taking the time to understand it, by posting my opinions and questions on the issue..." You say you were becoming informed by posting your opinion? Uh, whoa. wtf. Eagle eye. Impressive. I think you just solved a critical mystery. Much is explained in this revelation. Bravo.

He single-handedly destroys my bias against people under 25 with every word he posts. Now, then, Dianne, you've more than made up for your broad brush in that thread way back when, so you needn't coddle me so these days. But thank you for your kindly opinions. God knows where you're getting them, though -- this was the most restrained I've been in months. From: Osprey Therian I don't think anyone lurks to be better able to conform to prevailing opinions on the forum. Yes, brilliant, exactly what I was going for, I couldn't have put it better. It's not about learning how to kiss ass, but learning how not to infuriate inadvertantly. If you infuriate intentionally, well, that's a different story much less confined to newbies. From: Ulrika Zugzwang I am also a member of the Enanbran fan club. ~Ulrika~ You are too kind to this Enanbran. Perhaps I should meet him and question his choice of nickname.

Pecking order? There is no pecking order. The entire forum exists only for my amusement. There are no real people involved - only the ones I imagine as writing posts, and it is only the person I imagine that I am who reads it ;)

From: Enabran Templar Now, then, Dianne, you've more than made up for your broad brush in that thread way back when, so you needn't coddle me so these days. But thank you for your kindly opinions. ... Well the very last thing I would *ever* do is "kiss ass" or engage in useless flattery, in fact I hate that sort of thing. If I say something like this I mean it. But don't feel like I would not disagree with you if I happen to in the future, or that you cant scream and shout at me if you feel like it also. Until I can get the ship repaired, I am stuck on this planet anyway so I feel it best to fit in with the "Hu-mans." A key part of that (as far as I have been able to tell), is getting irrationaly upset over nothing from time to time.
