Prokofy,
<<But that doesn't mean he gets to be arrogant and condescending on forums,>>
I have known Chip online for some time, and I have *never* known him to be either arrogant or condescending. If you find him as such, then there is something wrong with your perception of him.
The problem with your first post is this: The Lake District, with capital letters, refers and only refers to an area of the UK. In the sense which you claim you used it (as referring to an area with many lakes) it should have lower case letters. But being a title of a thread, it calls for upper case. Clearly there is potential for ambiguity, and you should perhaps have thought of a phrase that would have turned out to be less contentious.

From: Selador Cellardoor I have known Chip online for some time, and I have *never* known him to be either arrogant or condescending. If you find him as such, then there is something wrong with your perception of him. I love this stuff. Happened to me, too. Somebody fucking mugged me on another thread, hadn't a clue as to what I was talking about, but decided he was going "teach the young'un a lesson" or something. And when I pointed out, fairly and not without wit, how ass-like he was acting, friends and neighbors rushed to tell me that he was just a really, really nice guy and how dare I take him on for behaving badly? Sorry, we only know these long-timers by how they behave toward us, right? Telling us they couldn't possibly be baboons when they are clearly hooting and scratching their armpits in our direction gets my vote for the most-irrelevant-and-insulting-posts-of-the-day. I don't agree much with Prokofy, and I have enjoyed most of Chip Midnight's many posts immensely. But telling one that there's something wrong with him because the other is such a nice guy, when clearly neither one are being nice to the other, is as silly as enjoying a plateful of bangers-and-beans for breakfast. And, btw, -T-he -L-ake -D-istrict also refers to a region in the American state of Nevada, a geological zone in Antarctica near Queen Maud Land, a region of Jupiter's volcanically-active moon Io, and an area of the highlands below Maxwell Montes on Venus. Sheesh, what an argument.

From: Dallas Moreau In the context of this really big, really meaningless, really multi-threaded argument going on here, Beryl, I really enjoyed your post. Whether or not it was intended that way, your kind attitude and sincere gratitude really, really destroyed both sides. It was like watching a "subtle" nuclear weapon go off and I am in awe. Thank you. Sincerely! (laughing like all hell) Well, um, thanks, but... my response was germane to Prokofy's original post, you know (which had some questions I've wondered about, too). We obviously have some really passionate, articulate people in SL with varied viewpoints. I tend not to want to get into heated arguments on forums (I can get my feelings hurt too easily, I must admit), but a lot of folk seem to enjoy sharpening their wits on others' opinions. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

From: someone I put the lettering on the lower back, because like Prokofy, its the closest thing to an asshole. I'm glad you're having fun, Weedy, and making content that might make up in some small way for the impoverishment of content you seem to experience in your game. If it seems important to have the last word -- take it, it's yours! It only exposes you further

From: someone I have known Chip online for some time, and I have *never* known him to be either arrogant or condescending. If you find him as such, then there is something wrong with your perception of him. *Shrugs*. Read his zealous posts in response to my posts and you'll see something different. You've been friends or acquaintances "a long time" at your own admission so you're already predisposed to defend each other in your inner circle. Just take a look at the tone of his responses -- anyone can see it who isn't his long-time online friend. From: someone The problem with your first post is this: The Lake District, with capital letters, refers and only refers to an area of the UK. Well, sure. And guess what, I know that! And guess what else, even being an American, I have a passport and I've been to England! And guess what else! Though Americans feel very proprietary about the term "Great Lakes" there is also a "Great Lakes" region in Africa! Imagine! From: someone In the sense which you claim you used it (as referring to an area with many lakes) it should have lower case letters. But being a title of a thread, it calls for upper case. Yes, and it was done deliberately to get people to think about the Lake District in RL, which we all know is in England, and all the other lakes in the US and Canada -- they've all been smushed together now in a NEW "Lake District" which is the SL Lake District. That's the point. It was a deliberate reference to the RL Lake District and a comment that now SL has a Lake District made up of other people's lakes not just the British lakes. It wasn't said to be contentious, but merely to raise an interesting point about how real-life features become transformed in SL. In RL the Lake District and the Great Lakes are nowhere near each other, but in SL they are all part of one area. So I guess to accommodate this fierce proprietary sense of the British about "The Lake District" we'll have to call all those lakes in SL "The Lake Region". Happy now? From: someone Clearly there is potential for ambiguity, and you should perhaps have thought of a phrase that would have turned out to be less contentious.
But it wasn't intended to be contentious, it was merely to make the point that there's the RL Lake District belong solely to England, but now there's one in SL made up of British, Canadian, and American lakes. But I guess people's RL's tribal loyalties are so fierce that they can't bear to have their geographical features mixed up on one big virtual grab-bag? Interesting. It seems to me that what happened is the typical European -- particularly British -- attitude towards Americans one frequently encounters on the forums and in the game, to the effect that Americans are yahoos who don't know anything about the rest of the world.

Geez, I feel like I'm back in the Debating Club in highschool. Hey, speaking of lakes, what's this I hear about a new Lindentree type called 'kelp'? That's crazy! Kelp isn't a tree, it's algae! Can I steal your waterwings, Torley? I'm afraid of deep water!
