Anyhow, I suspect Korg's problems had less to do with him being a conservative and a lot more to do with (edited). It's true that the two often go hand in hand, but I have met enough likeable conservatives and asshole liberals to know it doesn't have to be that way.

i think you hit it on the head although in the interest of fairness, being human and being an asshole often go hand in hand. i'ma guess that for any subgroup the proportion of assholes is probably about the same as the species as a whole. it's probably even universal like you could say "being a helium breathing slime being from Omicron IV and being an asshole often go tentacle in tentacle".

Ahhh, one more breath of fresh air for the forums.

Ahh, Darwin. I admire your optimism. Though I'm afraid that's a foolish and niaive hope.

You see, as long as forums give a voice to everyone, there will always be some jerks who don't act civilly.

Political affiliation has nothing to do with it. It has more to do with the fact that humans are instilled with a sense of social conformity by millions of years of instincts and evolution as a "pack animal". Many of our behaviors (IMHO) stem from this, and our resulting innate fear of negative repercussions if we cannot get along in a social situation. And humans are not unique in this respect - there are plenty of herd/pack animals where those that do not "cooperate" are ostracized or "punished" - left to fend more for themselves and often having a lower survival-rate.

Now, however, we suddenly have social groups online that are seperated by an unknowable distance, even when the person is "right in front of you". Not being physically close / connected to the people you deal with screws with many people's built-in limits on social behavior. I'm not saying it wipes them out or frees us from our responsibilities of acting properly - I'm saying that it weakens the natural tendancies; and some people are very willing to step over that line once the bar is lowered and there aren't any immediate or lasting repercussions of their actions. Since they are in control of their situation the whole time (i.e. I can log off whenever I want), there's no threat there compelling them to behave. (And it doesn't lower their chances of reproduction or survival - so sadly their genes may very well be passed on)... FYI, on a tangent for a moment: I think this sort of "distance effect" is also why its much easier to hate a race or religion when they're "over the horizon" and not integrated into our daily lives.

Anyways, I also think that this effect explains why Forums are always much more raucous than in a "real-time" environment like in-game: With Forums, you can take your time and say whatever the hell you want - and you don't have other people reacting to it as you go along. In person, people will physically and verbally react to things you say, as you say them. Seeing another person's face turn red from anger or embarrasment is recognized by our brains and tends to alter our behavior... In-Game, people might leave, or shout at the offender, or kick them off the property, or take any one of a number of actions; but on the Forums, they are "free" to say whatever and leave, without immediate consequences spoiling their intended behavior.

I find it sad that apparently some people NEED their instinctual "fear of repercussions" in order to act civilly - but online social interaction proves this effect exists, IMHO. I saw all this growing up around local phone-BBS's (where everyone online was a neighbor), and watching things change as social groups expanded and BBS's become National, then Global... culminating in the birth of the 'net. Plus, 3+ years of working on Multiplayer gaming at Sierra / WON.net proved it to me beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Korg did make some good arguements once in a while and for that I valued his input into the forums. Having someone who disagrees with you and presents their viewpoint in a manner which can force you to re-examine your own and challenges you to support it with strong and rational arguements is a very valuable thing.

Unfortunantly Korg's other little personal quirks prevented him from being one of those people, in fact he's one of the reasons that I haven't really posted very much.

Watching him continuously insult those who disagreed with him left me feeling icky and I started skipping over his posts to avoid that, and his endlessly repeated theme of 'I'm to smart to listen to you and you're too dumb to understand what I'm saying.' left me wondering if his only reason for posting in the forums was to aggravate people or attain some skewed sense of power by hurting their feelings.

They teach you in the customer service field that you never need to worry about the people that say they're never coming back. Those people just have a small problem they want addressed and don't know any sort of adult way to handle it. They always come back whether the problem is solved or not. It's the people who don't say anything and leave you have to worry about. All this "I'm quiting SL FOR GOOD THIS TIME" crap is equivalent to a down-syndrome inflicted 3 year old holding his breath until he gets a cookie.

Um, speaking... sorry to shatter your worldview.

Just want to make a small correction here. I appreciate you running my banner up the flagpole Billy but, I have been out for over a year now after a medical retirement due to injuries sustained over 'there'. (no I'm not talking about There ) The resulting end of that thread is exactly why I stayed out of it for the most part. I am a Republican and conservative in 85% of my views however I tenderize them with a modicum of common sense. I won't say good riddance or any of that trash. Korg is an individual and a human with obvious human interaction problems. This may stem from his military service. The tolerance and 'liberalism' so ensconced in today's 'pc' environment are usually not encouraged or nurtured off paper in the military. That being said sometimes I agreed with him and sometimes not. When he dove off the 25m board into the deep end was usually when I found great disgust in his rants.
