So what's the status of rating now? Is anyone rating or receiving ratings? What effect has the cost increase had on rating?

I haven't been rated since the changes. I have rated one person - a builder whose build particularly impressed me.

I gave one rating to someone who helped a newbie.

Other than that, no rating activity.

Hooray!

I've had I think two rates since the changes, with nice explanations each time :) It's nice, now I remember how I used to feel when I got rated!

Yeah, exept now, the rating actually means something! Congratulations on the meaningful rating. That should be what makes you feel really good. All those ratings you got before just meant they hadn't rated you yet.

I swear, not more than five minutes ago I overheard the following (paraphrased):

"I swore not to rate anyone ever since LL increased the cost of rating, but I just had to give you a good rating, that AV is just too cool."

Seems as though the ratings change is working perfectly!

I've had a couple. 3 or 4 I think... As you say, now it means something, it actually makes me smile.

I have gotten several ratings, and given several since the change - including 3 today. I think it will slow somewhat, but that the ratings we do get will be more meaningful.

I've been rating a few newbies after spending some time with them. I have also received a couple of rates from established players in past two days.

I do wish the totals were reset to 0 - then it would be really fun to see who's giving as well as who has received rates.

But yes, I know, they're meaningless.

I have rated two fabulous builds and one generous person acting above and beyond the call of duty. I am so pleased that ratings mean something now and so glad I don't feel I have to reciprocate rating people that I have no reason to rate....

I got a rating for something I made. And it came with a very honest message. It meant a lot to me. And I got the messaged sent to my email. So I saved it in my email archive. :D

I've rated a couple of builds that impressed me, a couple of AVs that obviously took some thought and effort, and 2 people for behavior for going out of their way to help out some new residents.

I've recieved a couple pos ratings, but I'm not sure what were for because they had no message and I don't keep track of my ratings to see what increased.

If nothing else this thread shows that the change to ratings is a great thing.

Ratings are supposed to matter, and should not be given out lightly. They're not supposed to be greeting cards or dirty looks.

I've barely been on this week, but I have rated the hosts of all events I've been to for behavior, and my alt was rated while AFK for 10 minutes at a telehub...

I'd rated a couple of people early in the week and gotten a few "I would rate you but I'm broke" messages from others.

Now my concern is if I continue to rate people and they wipe the ratings clean in the future. Why waste the $ on the rating? I have been just telling people why I would rate them... "I like your stuff", "that was very nice of you" and asking if they would rather a rate or the cash. I tried this on two people so far and they took the cash and then used it to rate me, so I went ahead and rated them too.

I really wish LL would give more ifo as to if they are considering wiping the ratings or not. If they already did then I must have missed it.

philip wrote that they can sort ratings by date. in the event that they decide to wipe out old ratings, they have the tools to only wipe out the old 1 L$ ratings. your new ratings would be safe. so rate away.

personally i will not rate until the 1 L$ ratings are wiped clean. this is my way of hoping to assert my wishes.

i think now is a good time to establish a community norm such as - ratings received do not have to be reciprocated.

Ratings, like $Lindens, are for residents to use or not as they chose.

The TOS is quite explicit about that and it will not change due to the change in cost. Griefers will grief with negs, those "flush with cash" will rate their friends and get ratebacks in return, and there will continue to be a relative few idealists who will continue to argue that ratings actually mean something other than having a direct relationship to bonus money to stipends.

Ratings are inherently "look at me" marks - granted, they are given by someone else, but they are the "flashing lights" and sirens of the SL viratual world. I don't know of a single person in SL who, given the option, would not display his/her positive rates in his/her profile. That being said, they merely serve as "neon signs" and no other turly useful purpose (other than the aforementioned financial bennie).

Those of you who are rating now, at the higher cost, are basically buying into the above argumetn whether you agree with it or not. If ratings mean nothing to you, then you won't rate. If they do mean something to you, then ask yourself why -- also why a public sign someone likes you is important... Wouldn't a private IM mean as much or more? If THAT is true, then what "extra" do you get from the fact that someone spent a "valueless" $25L to make a public statement.

Let's not be hypocrits here. Let's face facts. The only thing that has changed as far as the ratings system in SL goes is that the ratings system is just flawed differently now - yet moreso now than before from at least three perspectives I can divine (including but nnot limited to regressive tax effect, the "look at me" aspect, and the continuing possibilities for abuse).

Let's just wait a few weeks until the majority of SL residents income drops to 500 a week. Of course the money sellers won't be complaining due to their hike in pay on GOM. Seriously what's the big deal about ratings anyway?? Am I supposed to judge my own opinion of someone based on what someone else thinks of them? The real reason the complaints about the rating system started in the first place is because the money sellers weren't making more and more per L$ on GOM. Of course they won't state their greed in public instead of continue to say how broke the rating system is. To me what the rating system used to mean (back when it was affordable to rate people) was 'gee thanks for the nice gesture to put a couple bucks in my pocket, let me do the same for you'. Am I a cheater or whatever term the money sellers were using because I wanted to make enough money to enjoy my time is SL? I do beleive someplace in SL's documentation it stated 'make money for being nice' ie. get good ratings/give good ratings make money. Now it will cost you more then you can make so that statement is now a lie.

I'm sure if I had vender shops all over filled to the hilt with quality stuff people would actually buy, or resided on the top 10 bankroll list (as many I see defending this change do) I wouldn't have much of an opinion on this pay cut for the average SL player. But since I have neither I'm stuck with what I can make with my ratings. And that 500 a week base isn't jack shit!
