Formal Response to a Formal Warning

Most people did devlin, infact I think probably EVERYONE did, the lindens were told it was a joke, the apology is in the thread, but NO it's just not good enough is it, someone has to be an example and it seems Kris and I got the short straws

I knew the thread was a joke and the fact that they censoed an OFF TOPIC post makes their actions of sending out warngs laughable...What exactly are the rules and guidlines for off topic then if you can't be OFF TOPIC

On an ironic note, Eggy and Darwin did a joke argument thread like this a few months back... I remember no such admonitions from LL in that case... guess it was funny then, but not now...

Hah, you know, you're right, Nolan. And now that I think about it, not only did Eggy and Darwin do one, the SL Tyrell Corp. (or NexCorp, or whatever the heck they call themselves now) did one around April Fool's Day. And that one got a 4/02/04 Terra Nova write-up by Cory (Linden) Ondrejka. In light of Kris' and Willow's warning for the recent joke thread, this seems... odd.

LL is very inconsistent. I agree on that, but not on the favoritism bit.
I got an informal warning from Robin Linden about the use of profanity.
What I did was to post the infamous list of words you cant say on TV.
Well guess what, I did the exact same thing a year ago and nobody cared.
I dont understand why the forums have to be moderated at all.
Here's a free hint:
Real life isn't moderated.
Real people know and use all the words they want.
Words have no inherent meaning. They are mere carriers for our intentions.
These forums are private. They are hidden to non-members. There is zero chance that anything I say here will affect LL's financial success.
If you tell me that LL can be sued (and lose!) for someone spouting drama in these forums, or for using the F word, I will not believe you.
That said, I really wish we could go back to the day when the off topic forum was a place where you could find me and Chip immersed in intelectual discussion.
So in a way LL isnt moderating enough. I really wish we could split the OT forum into Silly and Serious OT stuff. LL doesnt need to handle this moderation themselves but the forum software is too primitive to safely allow us to moderate it ourselves...

Not taking a side one way or the other, but I think the inconsistancy is pretty easy to explain... no one at LL has time to read every single post on a daily basis, weigh them all on some objective scale, and then act on them in an even handed way. They have better things to do. So what are their options? They can either let the forums be a complete free for all, or they can issue warnings about the things they notice and think are out of line, or that people specifically complain about. I really don't think there's any favoritism going on... not in giving certain people a free pass, or singling people out for special scrutiny. Just my two cents.

Agreed.. however, if they spent 1/100 of the time dealing with in-world problems that lead up to forum problems, we might get somewhere. After reading about incidents of in-world racism and the such, I get kinda pissed every time that I see time taken to read a thread and lock it.

I agree about favoritism too. The inconsistency is confusing though. Lock the thread, issue a public admonition, but formal warnings threatening suspension when this same type of stuff has gone on unchecked in the past is annoying.

I would also add that I think they read a lot more than we know about.

They did read the thread that Kris mentioned in her orginal post and they even responded by saying it was off topic and moved it to off topic. That thread was not a joke and it was filled with personal attacks.

Maybe the Lindens are just trying to recapture the forums after the noise-to-signal ratio has gotten a wee bit out of hand lately?

Why DOES every thread have to be derailed, anyway?

I wonder if the perceived favoritism actually comes from certain people or groups of people that have personal feelings against others that are quick on the Report button. If I and my friends didn't like someone in the forums and reported every single post they made that was at all questionable, then it stants to reason that there's a good chance that more of that person's threads are going to be locked/ censored/ etc than others.

I'm not really expressing an opinion on whether or not LL plays favorites but I do wonder, considering that LL seems to have their resources stretched a little thin at the moment, if they have the time to really look at the disputes arising in the forums or if we are just seeing somewhat of a knee jerk reaction to the Report button.

Linden Labs, if you are going to warn people about the tones of their posts or otherwise, at least be consistant about it. Take down the forums if you must, but dont pick on one post that is no worse than another.

I have seen many a thread that I would have expected to have been moved or deleted, yet have not been, and perfectly fine threads be deleted.

I think its about time someone looked at their own internal moderating policies and made them less subjective to how good the day at work was, or whether someone had annoyed you .

What's the big deal? It's always been inconsistent. There always have been favoritism. Maybe it's just as simple as it seems, they too agree that your posts are getting fucking annoying so they're doing something about it.
To even mention paying $200 to get singled out is just a lame move. Crying over getting your feelings hurt and threatening to not pay your $200/mo because of the forums just seems silly to me.

Tsk Tsk... Everyone who pays monthly has the right to post WHERE and WHAT they like within reason and where our posts may annoy some or even alot of you, we don't go round calling other people fucking fucktards do we? Well except each other for jovial purposes, and we get warned for it!

The point isn't about WHAT we post and WHO the fuck gets annoyed, its about the fact that hypocrisy rules these forums.

You're kidding me right? The forums don't even need to exist. It's basically here out of the kindness of LL's heart. Nobody has the right to anything here. Tomorrow they can make a rule that whoever's name starts with an 'I' will permanantly have the signature 'fucktard' if they want.

It is about who gets annoyed if it's the moderators who are getting annoyed. That's the point. LL rules all and they can do whatever they want. Is there hypocrisy? Hell ya and it's always been like that.

I see your point, and as I have stated many times before I accept my warning, I wear it with pride, I am just pissed that we were singled out. The irony of a joke thread getting us a warning.. it's laughable.

But w/e lifes too short to get stressed out over forums, for a game, I got stressed, I got upset, I dealt with it.

Linden Lab is a small company. They don't have an army of 20 mods to police the forums, editing out naughty bits and slapping offenders with reprimands.

Their forum moderation is a part time job, at best, and wholly unsatisfying, I'm sure. Every thread that gets pushed around, edited, or locked gets at least one more person up in arms about the "Linden Police State".

If you want forum censorship, go to the stratics forums. They're a fascist dictatorship compared to our sunny monarchy.

Furthermore, I would imagine that the Lindens only lock/delete/edit threads that get a decent amount of abuse reports filed about them.

Ergo, you must be pissing enough folks off to get a stern warning.

Maybe the favoritism has something to do with the quality and the subject of the post?

Perhaps you can get away with more drama and/or salty dialogue when making satirical and to-the-point comments about serious subjects of community interest?

Maybe the Lindens are cracking down on -- how do ya say? -- "sensual over-cuteness," "rhetorical bomb-throwing-and-barb-tossing," and other forum equivalents of the 100 meter, rotating, purple, I'm-for-sale sign?

In other words -- a double-standard based largely on the importance of the subject to the SL community, n'est pas? Perhaps you can get away with more while making a good point about, say, the state of the economic order in SL, than you can with yet another tired double-entendre about online sexuality, or yet another tired celebration of somebody's biatchiness.

Ah, don't mind me. I'm just feeling tired and biatchy, and I can't think of anything blatantly sexual to say.
