but I still say that the CCF was about as forthwright as they can be. you can't get any clearer than a footnote on every single page on the site saying "WE WERE HIRED BY THE GUYS PETA IS FUCKING WITH TO FUCK PETA BACK." paraphrased, ofcourse.

I'd like to see something similar on PETA's: "HI! WE ARE A GROUP CREATED BY CRAZY ANIMAL MILITANTS. THEY ACT NUTS SO THAT WE SEEM REASONABLE AND CAN GET YOUR CASH! PAMELA ANDERSON GETS NAKED FOR US!!!!"

Well, wait a minute y'all... wasn't the point of this thread that PETA is now selling merchandise (assumingly for profit) at... HOT TOPIC??

Firstly, isn't that a store, in a mall, which has been bult only by leveling trees and digging up grass and displacing hundreds of animans, insects, and birds only in the interests of capitalist society? I thought that's one of the things PETA is against- capitalisim infringing on the quality of life for wildlife. So if they're selling stuff in a store that is only found in malls (at least as much as I've seen) then aren't they, indirectly, supporting the advancement of capitalisim?

Secondly, Hot Topic is the kind of store that is frequented by impressionable young teenagers who are just looking to get a rise out of anyone. I know that with the advent of the internet people can get information much more quickly than when I was a teenager (so teens buying shirts could find out about PETA after the shirt has been bought), but does it strike you as odd that PETA is choosing a store where most of the customers would probably buy the PETA merch based on an intellectual thought process such as:

PETA=controversial/ I wanna be controversial/ I'll buy a PETA shirt!

Not having done research I can't say for sure this is how the shirts/stickers will be bought, but that's the first thought process that came to mind when I heard about them selling through Hot Topic. So it seems somewhere in PETA someone decided it'd be good for buisness if they sold shirts somewhere where the average buyer is impulsive and wants to be "radical." They're not selling these shirts at organic grocery stores or organic clothing stores, or even on the internet, they're doing it at HOT TOPIC. Which I don't hesatate to call the most POSER store I know of.

Thirdly, one has to wonder why they're selling their merch at a store that hasn't got a track record of:
A)donating to orginizations whose manifestoes are in concordance with PETA's
B)making sure that their stores are carring information about concerns which are in agreement with PETA's manefesto
&C)selling products to people who are going to be the type to support PETA any further than buying a controversial T-Shirt.

It all seems like a bunch of shifty advertising to me, directed at impressionable teenagers whose dollars are going to PETA for all the wrong reasons.

well, I originally started the thread to have people sign the petition. I quoted the hot topic thing because I wanted everyone to read my well crafted letter to their president. ;D

but yes, I'm glad you point all of these things out.

kids who shop at hot topic (incorrectly, oh OH so incorrectly) think that they're soooo alternative. one of the BEST things I ever heard was when I was walking through a mall in new orleans and I saw two little thirteen year old girls standing outside the store saying, "like, amber firestorm, we shop at hot topic, we're soooooo anticonformist."

it's poseur. so poseur. but they don't realize that.

so advertizing PETA, which is such a great program that impressionable teenagers and college students stick themselves to because that's the huge bulk of their memberbase (WHY else do you think the ALF goes and holds conferences at schools? to attract college kids who're already insane and activat-ing as it is) is totally meant to equate PETA with being sooo anticonformist.

I'm tired and I want the week to end, I don't think I'm even constructing sentences anymore.

but just basically my bull with PETA is that they act like they're helping out animals and the environment when they're just basically the ALF/ELF's bitches. I HATE lying by groups who claim to be altruistic.

THAT's my problem with them.

fuck PETA. with Taye Diggs' cock.

My turn to concede the point. If I were running PETA, first order of business would be to give the cops a full list of anybody engaged in criminal activity, because they make us all look like loonies, and second order would be to make sure partners in any venture are consistant, compatible and squeaky clean.

Which may explain why I've never been given any authority in any organization beyond the power to keep my desk tidy.

hmmm..... it was quite a gem. I don't remember off the top of my head, but I think it was a thread started by Catherine Cotton that had a bazillion pages of replies.

As a veteran of many game boards, I count it as a civil and constructive discussion if nobody has accused me of being some form of prostitute by the third post. By that measure, this thread is a model of enlightened debate.

Actual members of PETA may disagree.

Actual members of PETA would have dipped into their cache of bazookas for a hostile takeover of this forum, praying that their terror tactics made SLers pick up a carrot instead of a Slim-Jim. Those ANIMALS! ;)

After reading the PETA website I have decided to support total animal liberation. It will take some changes in my life but I think it's worth it. I am going to start right now.

I hear there are some chickens at Popeye's down the street that need liberating. Remember, even if they're batter-dipped and deep fried it's still not to late to liberate them. I will do it! Three pieces at a time.

Has anyone here read the book Fast Food Nation? It is a terribly written book but some of the information is interesting. I was amazed at how much influence McDonalds and the fast food industry have over the beef and potato industry. It didn't change my life but it does give you some insights into agribusiness.

Idaho's not worth saving, not even for mashed potatoes with butter and gravy and a large smathering of cranberry sauce.
