I fear much of the PETA crowd is more interested in attention and self-rightousness than actually wanting to help animals. While I give them credit for exposing cases of animal mistreatment, their obnoxious publicity stunts (for example, comparing factory farmed chickens to hollcaust victims) annoy and alienate people as oppossed to elicting any concern.

Exactly. I will never take them seriously because of this type of rhetoric. I financially support orgs which work toward cleaning up pig farms (runoff), fight against turkeys being packed in like sardines living in their own waste, and techniques used in raising veal calves, however, I research them all VERY carefully and PETA will never get a dime from me. _____________________

What has always intrigued me is that we, as humans, ever started to consume other animals. What I am getting at is this: we get sick from raw meat (not always but often times) so we figured out cooking it was much better. But why? We have always had plant life to live off of, as the diet of other mammals prove. Don't get me wrong, I love a good steak, I put ground beef in my tacos and chili, etc. I suppose it's the natural order of things, but then I have to wonder why some creatures are eaten and others are taboo, horses, cats, dogs, etc. Is it because of their relative intelligence? If so, why do we kill and consume whales?

We can get sick from raw plants as well. I think it is more the type of meat you are eating.
I would have no problem eating horses or cats if that's what was available to me. My only meat issue is that I have a hard time eating meat that doesn't look like the animal it came from. Steaks are ok, hamburger is not. _____________________

It's because in our (read: those who have taboos for those animals) history, those animals have been kept as pets, companions, and work rather than as livestock. Simply because of the emotional attachment that we put upon them.
I didn't know that we did kill and consume whales... unless you are talking about somewhere besides where I live? ![]() _____________________

Oh and to go back to the PETA thing... any of you see the South Park where PETA got the school to change their mascot from the South Park Cows, then ended up all getting slaughtered by Puff Daddy? Classic.

Until whale hunting laws were passed. Some countries still practice it despite the knowledge available about the scarcity and intelligence of such animals. _____________________

One of the funniest protests I've seen was when one of the skin painted Peta ladies got in her cage, two people unfurled a banner behind her saying 'PETA EXPLOITS WOMEN AND REINFORCES NEGATIVE STEREOTYPES'
It was hillarious. And the Peta crowd were pretty pissed too ![]() Siggy. _____________________

O_o Protests are only effective if they don't piss off the people undecided about your issue, because you crap all over some different issue. _____________________

On a similar line of thought, I have been wondering what part of a chicken does the "popcorn" come from? KFC claims its breast meat. Since the pieces are of no specific shape, it could be anything. I doubt its even chicken. Its probably bits of human limbs that got caught in moving machinery. ![]() _____________________

The chicken is just left lying around at room temp at times not to mention the cooler smells rotten , raw, sometimes for hours. It's a GREAT job though, they have a speedometer on their PC system that indicates if your selling enough crap. ![]() _____________________

Yes , skin painted.. they get someone who is not unpleasing to the eye, paint their skin with tiger stripe body paint, attach a pair of kitty ears and tail, then kneel (rather submissively) topless in a cage holding a 'fur is naughty' (or similar) sign to cover thier boobies. Siggy. _____________________

PETA ranges from a bunch of nuts to bordering on being a terrorist group. (Granted, ELF is worse.... somewhat....)
Humans are natrually omnivores. I refuse to apologize for not weakening myself with a diet that requires artificial suppliments for my survival. (And even at that, doesn't work as well.) |

Someone, I think Nolan, but I'm not reading back to check... Sorry if it's not you hun... asked how we came to eat meat if raw meat makes us ill... Well, that wasn't always the case. The reason for that is just that our hyper-sanitised environment has left us with digestive and immune systems which border on being completely pointless. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the cooking of meat started off with religious ceremonies of burning the animal (or human) as a sacrifice, not as a way to make it taste better. The fact that it kills a load of potential nastiness is a happy side effect.

Is it because of their relative intelligence? If so, why do we kill and consume whales? It's weighted by various factors: - Tastiness : Is this animal particular nice or a part of a specialty food? - Intelligence / Behaviour / Domestication : Domesticated animals, or animals which apparently shared human-like traits are 'taboo'. - Appearance : Is this animal particularaly 'cute'? ![]() I still dont get where these whacko's are coming from however, humans are omnivores, for the last several millenia we have had meat comprise a large portion of our diet, why do we need to change? -Adam _____________________

You are what you eat.
I would rather have a cramped vegetable inside of me (ooohhh the imagery!!) then a cramped sad chicken. Its not just the runoff that is bad for hogs and cows - its having their babies ripped away from them just after birth. With mares, who are tied to stalls so as to collect their urine all the time they are pregnant - its having their colts/fillies ripped away from them. Did ya know that is where PREMARIN comes from?? Break it down or look it up: PRE = pregnant MAR = mare IN = urine they aren't even clever about conceiling it. Humans are way to arrogant - I think maybe ya will be shocked to see that St Peter is a cow! Yeah - ok - I am an animal lover. I have been in PETA although I do think of them as rather radical, they have accomplished ALOT. Which means nothing unless you are compassionate about the lives of others... and that includes animals. Go ahead - now have a heyday. I can take it from you youngins. _____________________

Omnivores
12-16-2004 06:04
The diet of primate omnivores tends to be about 99% plant material and 1% meat, with a big part of that "meat" being squiggly things with too many legs.

The human body actually produces specific enzymes to aid in the digestiion of meat. When you stop eating meat, your body stops producing the enzyme.
I'm no scientist, but if my body is capable of creating an enzyme to help digest meat, then I figure I should probably be eating it. Plus, have you ever had bacon? I've thought about it. There is no better use for bacon than eating it. _____________________
