With the Top Picks via Ebay now being purchased;
I fear that this opens a portal for a RL business to pay to advertize on a large scale in SL. I say fear because I realy don't want to see commercialism in SL not RL commercialism big business. I'm not talking about ppl buying or selling land, I'm not talking about selling clothing or textures, goods or services either. I support all those things.
By big business I mean someone like;
I hope a big company like daz3d.com doesn't buy its way into SL this way. (texture company with and endless supply of textures and artists on hand. Also reseller of Bryce5. That could realy hurt the ppl who do textures, skins, clothes.
Anyone feel like me on this issue?
(pardon the typos I have had no sleep, insomnia)

You wouldn't have that ebay link would you? I'd like to go bid up the price, get control of all the TopPick slots and then resell them to the masses for double. Could you help out a fellow Libra Cotton?

I think its wrong. I guess the best way to deal with it is not to look at that page, I shan't.

Damn.. Think of all the money... Charge Double or Triple for those slots.. Hell, ebay will be like the IPO land and the real money will come from the secondary market of reselling it back to folks in SL.. PayDay$$$$$$$$$$$

Did I read somewhere that the donator of US$8m to LL was the owner of Ebay? If so this stinks.

Are you back, or still gone? Your statement is completly unjustly made. I dont see a quote you disagree withk or your opinion on anything I have said in the last couple of days. So what do you base this opinion on? As far as I am concerned it was posted in an attempt to anger me. Which it didn't. So I can only surmise it was yet another Troll remark.

Yes. I think this is a horrible idea.
We could end up with in-game markets being hurt as you mentioned.
We could also end up with obnoxious adverts for on-line pharmacies, porn, soda, McDonald's, etc etc. What's a couple hundred dollars to these compainies that could well have hundreds of thousands of dollars (or more) to advertise?
Top Picks:
1. SEXUALLY-EXPLICIT: No Cost Adult Personals 2. New product! Cialis soft tabs. 3. THE BEST MOTHER NATURE HAS TO OFFER - Natural \/1AGR/\! 4. Have a Coke And A Smile! 5. Eat Another Lard-burger, Fatty! 6. etc etc etc
OR LL will somehow try to vet (examine thoroughly and presumably censor) every single advert space that is purchased... sounds like a big can of worms to me.

Interesting. I went to daz3d.com just now and I had the opposite reaction. I wish they would come into SL. It would probably improve the overall quality of builds in SL (mine included). And the best artists in SL now can compete with them.
As far as top picks, I wish people like SLExchange or SLUniverse would just start their own. There doesn't have to be one set of top picks, any more than there is one set of movie reviews or one set of book recommendations in RL.
BTW, did you or did you not leave SL? I honestly don't know how that ended up.

I also don't want to see mass RL commercialism in SL. No Nike billboards, no Sim Disney, no professional companies peddling their wares and driving the average SL resident out of business. I'm not against capitalism, or even commercialism, but I believe it should be done by SL residents, as it always has been. We helped pioneer this world, we've earned the right to sell our asses to the highest bidder without The Man stepping in and offering better asses for cheaper.

i hadn't thought of outside firms actively advertising in the auctioned slots. i have thought that residents might use the entries to advertise outworld websites, products and services. if they do that, and share referral data with ll, they might convince the company that sl can functionally integrate with other internet services.
the best result will be an addition of llhyperlink() to lsl. if we have that scripting feature, and a similar ability to enter active urls into notecards, the world will merge radically with the web. i doubt it'll come to that. ll never implemented xml/rpc completely because they were terrified of this effect.
the firm's centralist view necessarily protects us from such a thing based on the simple fear that residents will click on a link, browse away from the world, and not return to the session. the fact that people can already browse into the world, and are already adding those links to websites and signatures, seems to elude their reasoning.
it'll fall one way or the other catherine. sl will either become part of the www and, eventually, the w3b; or ll will continue to actively prevent this from happening and the world will fall by the wayside as other services hop on the bandwagon. we'll just have to wait and see. this whole auctioned featured idea being used to advertise outworld products just wasn't thought through before it was announced. if it happens, they'll likely not auction them again after the first two weeks.

I don't check the forums every day, and this is the first time that I noticed that you're back, or still here. Is your account cancelled? If I cancelled my account as well, will I still be able to post in the forums? If you're back, then welcome back. I was just curious whether you're posting as a cancelled account, or if you changed your mind and didn't leave after all.
