From: Ghoti Nyak People can buy them and upload them now. Yes, but I assumed CC was talking about them setting up shop here. Otherwise I'm not sure what it is she was worried about. From: Ghoti Nyak The difference being one is officially part of the program interface, while the others are external links or at the least not as weasily accessable as clicking on 'Find'. -Ghoti I think Adam Zaius or others could link the two though. I've actually been working on an offline grid map (similar to the one in the SL client) that supports landmark lists that can be exchanged and subscribed to. I could have the map send the location of a landmark to an attachment worn in world. That's just an example. But Adam has more resources than I do, and he doesn't sleep

First of all it says PG listings for the 'top picks' replacement. Secondly, Catherine, you've stated on more than one occasion you were leaving SL, so that post was simply asking if you have returned. If you really want me to go dig up the numerous times you've said you were leaving, just say the word. And finally, the top picks are limited to 20 slots, that are hidden in the find dialog. Those of running off about OMG in world adverts, blah blah blah, really need to get a grip. If you have such a problem with who the 20 picks go to, then don't look at them in the find tool, and don't visit the spots in world. End of story. I can't believe the whole boohoo everything isn't the way I want it in SL mentality that ppl have expressed over the past couple of days. As in RL, in SL the grid doesn't revolve around any one person, get over yourselves, SL will continue to grow and change, either adapt with the changes, or become extinct.

Am I naive to think that large corporations either don't know about nor do they care about advertising in SL at this stage of our growth? I, too, was a bit miffed when I read these auctions were going to be put on Ebay. I do believe LL's intention was to have players bid on them, not companies and such. By holding the auctions on such a public platform as Ebay opens up a whole different can of worms. I can't wait for the day I open my "Featured Links" page and see an ad for Viagra! Truth of the matter is, I never looked at Top Picks and I'm sure I won't look at the Featured Links page either. I never seem to remember! It certainly will be interesting to see what happens.

I don't get it, Catherine. You announced your departures quite loudly here on the forums, and now you're acting like whether you've left is some kind of private matter. Do I have to start another thread just to ask if you've left or not? That seems kind of silly.

Catherine, YOU, my dear, are part of the problem with this drama. Please, please, please stop disseminating FALSE and INCORRECT information. You are doing ZERO good for getting people to understand what is going on here. Let me help clear things up: From: Catherine Cotton With the Top Picks via Ebay now being purchased;
This is flat-out WRONG. Top Picks DO NOT EXIST anymore. Did you get that Catherine? They DO NOT EXIST ANYMORE. LL is starting a new program "Sponsored Links". This is fundamentally different than Top Picks. Top Picks was a program where the Lindens would choose a build/object/etc that they thought was beneficial for the community and deserving of some highlight. Sponsored Links are advertisements - do you see the difference here? From: Catherine Cotton I fear that this opens a portal for a RL business to pay to advertize on a large scale in SL. I say fear because I realy don't want to see commercialism in SL not RL commercialism big business. I'm not talking about ppl buying or selling land, I'm not talking about selling clothing or textures, goods or services either. I support all those things.
By big business I mean someone like;
I hope a big company like daz3d.com doesn't buy its way into SL this way. (texture company with and endless supply of textures and artists on hand. Also reseller of Bryce5. That could realy hurt the ppl who do textures, skins, clothes.
Do we know the fine print details of this program yet? Do we know if it will be open to the public or only to SL residents? I think it's a bit premature to start getting worried about this until LL puts out the details on how this will operate.

From: Alexa Hope Did I read somewhere that the donator of US$8m to LL was the owner of Ebay? If so this stinks.
Alexa No. One of the investors in the last round of $8Million is also an investor in Ebay.. not the 'owner' and not all $8M. There is no link between LL and Ebay other than one common investor.

I also asked if anyone felt like I did. If you feel this is more than what it is, I'm sorry that is incorrect. Its an honest statement about how "I" feel and I wanted to know if I was alone in that feeling or if anyone else was feeling the same. I don't think the way you do apparenlty because when I read your statements I see a lot of stuff that has nothing to do with what I am saying or feeling. as for "Sponsored Links" now not called "top picks" sorry I am used to calling it that. It was an honest mistake. I don't think you needed to be so rude about it.

Cat, I adressed your 'opinion' at the end of the post - did you not read it? I said I felt, in my opinion, it was too early to form a pro/neg stand on the issue becuase we are missing key information, such as whether the auctions are open to the general public or just SL residents. I'm not trying to be rude, but you are posting mis-information and others are forming opinions on that bad information. Let me try to explain more: *IF* LL was auctioning off the old Top Picks on Ebay, I'd be right there with you. That setup goes against the grain and the spirit of Top Picks.. but that's not what is happening. LL has setup an avenue for ANY resident to advertise thier business, which is something I think is hugely beneficial for anyone willing to pony up some cash. Yes, I know you might not appreciate that aspect of it (the $$ part), but advertising isn't free.

From: Catherine Cotton For one LL said there would be NO involvement of Ebay in SL. Remember I was called many vile things when I said that was BS. Hmmm guess who was right after all. whos crazy now huh crazy like a fox That means ebay won't run SL.. That doesn't mean SL and Ebay won't have a working partnership.. Remember, this is a business, not a college campus art project.

"Sponsored Links" is the old top picks its the same thing with a new name. "We're going to experiment with something new. Instead of just eliminating Top Picks entirely, we're going to auction up to 20 slots to SL creators who want to showcase an object, a script, a place or any other creation for a two week period. The slots will be auctioned on eBay. For more information, and a link to the first auction, please check...http://secondlife.com/community/featured.php" follow that link it goes here... http://secondlife.com/community/featured.phpwhich then goes here.... http://search.ebay.com/Featured-position-on-Second-Life-In-world-Directory_W0QQcatrefZC5QQcatrefZC6QQcoactionZcompareQQcoentrypageZsearchQQcopagenumZ1QQfclZ3QQfromZR10QQfrppZ50QQfsopZ1QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQsaslZslfeaturesQQsaslopZ1QQsatitleZQ22FeaturedQ20positionQ20onQ20SecondQ20LifeQ20InQ2dworldQ20DirectoryQ22QQsbrftogZ1QQsofocusZbsQQsojsZ1QQsorefinesearchZ1which is ebay and the bidding is open to anyone not just sl residents. Wow. How much more clear do I need to be. Sponsored Links is NOT the old Top Picks. As I've said before, they are fundamentally different. One (Top Picks) was like an award for creating something beneficial for the community. The other (Sponsored Links) is advertising. How else can I clear this up for you Cat?

Juro: You gotta speak in code for it to get translated correctly: English: Top Picks was like an award for creating something beneficial for the community CC Code: Top Picks are free for everybody to use. English: Sponsored Links is advertising CC Code: Sponsored Links are free for everybody to use.

Nice boiler plate response Cat. Why bother responding at all. My original post was not to Troll, it was to share my opinion on the subject being discussed. You stated that you are concerned about commercialization of the top picks. I stated that I think they are rarely looked at as is, and that ppl need to calm down a touch. If that's not speaking to the topic I don't know what is. But fine, as usual, you just jump on the forums to stir things up, then run away when everyone pushes back. Enjoy 'leaving' SL again when this round of trolling is done for you.
