Oh my, you thought I meant *you*.....wow, now I don't know what to think. Hmm, seems I unwittingly pressed a sore button, my mistake. Lets continue talking about badly managed mall sims :)

Yes, I thought you meant me. Sorry if I misunderstood that. When I was new in Second Life I was holding Lovemaking classes and since those did not receive Linden support I charged some modest tuition fee. I thought teaching was one good way to earn some L$ so that I can also go to shop buy nice things. But as result of this some people have been very very mean to me, trying to punish me for charging tuition instead of working for free. So, yes, very very sore button.

As for running malls, maybe we can work on some code of conduct every mall owner should follow and might add to rental agreement?

Seeing how contracts aren't enforceable in SL, I see that as a extremely poor suggestion, business-wise. Perhaps we should stop pretending that in-world is the same as real life, it would make things a lot easier.

You can't 'act' like a contract is enforceable when it isn't. That isn't business, its tomfoolery.
Unless that suddenly creeps into the next release, then....there is no basis for any contractual planning.

I agree that enforceable contract would be better. But I think something non-enforceable is better than nothing. It may at least help make things a little more explicit and serve as something to measure business person against.

So maybe "contract" is wrong word. It would rather be business promise.

Problem is, if it isn't enforceable, it might as well be nothing. At best, its a false sense of security.

I think it is better than nothing. Think of it as a Code of Ethics. It may not be legally enforceable, but an unethical landowner can be held accountable by the citizens if not by legal means. A Code of Ethics could be used as a reference tool to more easily identify violators and those to avoid.

An unethical landowner can already be held accountable by citizens. Honestly, I'm surprised people are still doing business and eagerly handing their money over to some of the landowners who have already proven themselves to be questionable, at best, and downright nasty at worst.

This is not the first time a mall has imploded and left the renters with their hat in their hands. It's not even the first time it's happened with this particular mall owner. If experience doesn't teach us not to do business with people who take our money and leave us with nothing, a Code Of Ethics won't teach us that either. Only common sense can do that.
