Magnum,
I don't want this to be taken the wrong way... no disrespect here. But some folks, not naming names (there would be too many), but some folks would say that that is the very definition of rate mining.
Someone posted a thread about ratings and 'unskilled labor' and they had some pretty good points, but that's another argument.... you are -clearly- using the rating system to make a living in SL, and that is not what it's supposed to be for.

From: Magnum Serpentine that was uncalled for. you asked if that sounded like rate mining. i think it does. if noobies are staying in SL because you rated them does that mean sl itself wasn't enough? really do you think they stay because of the ratings or the sex balls? get real!

The bonuses were cut in half, not your bonus. Jessica summed it up pretty well earlier in the thread, but here is a recap. The bonus is based on where you rank, the cut was not a frozen, "half of your current bonus".
We get a bonus for where we rank in two categories, our overall rating and the change in the current week. Each one used to top out at L$750, now they top out at L$375. If you are not in the top percentile of either category, your bonus will be incrementally less than L$375.
Where you rank overall will change slowly, especially if you already have 1000+ ratings. But, the overall position will change gradually as others surpass you. The weekly change can be dramatic and this bonus should routinely show the most fluctuation. If you take a vacation and get no ratings the week your gone, you will obviously get less of a weekly bonus compared to someone that got rated ten times while you were out.
The increased charge for ratings make them worth more now. Not worth more to the pocketbook, but to the reputation. Having to pay a little more makes them more valuable and you will likely rate those you feel deserve it rather than just throw them out as a greeting.

Wrong. I rate people because I am trying to be nice and because I have had newbies say that was the reason they stayed because someone was nice to them.

From: Magnum Serpentine I am very happy to had given out 3 times the ratings than I took in. It means to me, that I am being very nice to people. Well I'm happy that you're very happy.

From: Lordfly Digeridoo behavior: 353 appearance: 329 building: 326
...means nothing but a good builder. Who said that the rate system was totally broken? It was still a good indicator of the building skill. It just needs to be interpreted, for example: behavior: 1000 appearance: 900 building: 600 means a crappy builder, while: behavior: 80 appareance 75 building: 70 means a good one. When the building rate is not so lower then the appearance one, made save some rare cases, there you have a good builder. It's just a matter of balance. This because in the mining process one was rated in behavior for the most and also in appareance sometimes, while it was more difficult to receive all three together. So, if your rate in building is near the other two, it means that you have been rated exclusively in building many times, aka you're a good builder. Now, if I have to recur to this weird logic to understand something of the person I have in front of me by his rates, while they was intended as skill indicators, you can have a clue of why some people was so upset with all this free rate away and receive back.

From: Magnum Serpentine Wrong.

Kids would probably stay in high school if teachers handed out free Playboy magazines too. Doesn't mean it's right. By giving out 9000 ratings (which means you've triple-positive rated over TWENTY PERCENT of the total active playerbase), you're diluting the meaning of the rating system. You were part of the problem, not the solution. One can only hope the Lindens decay the "old" ratings to lessen the damage done.

From: Ale Bukowski ...means nothing but a good builder. Not really, it just means that the vast majority of my rates were triple-positives, which is the most common thing to give out (or was).

From: Kris Ritter Yeah. Why ARE those kids so fucking happy at getting orange juice? What's in that stuff? Not orange juice anyway. I think it's 99% sugar, 0.8% water, and traces of vitamin-C and beta-carotene.

Really though, here's my empirical observation: If anyone ate anyone, Philip Linden would prolly be the one to go chow-hungry. My reasoning behind this is because he has that big mouth on his shirt, with the big lips and the voluptuous tongue. Now, it appears to be 2D, but since Second Life is a 3D world, the choppers -- those chompchompchomp teeth -- could start extruding as the lips curled and pursed around them. Then, the tongue would flail out, entrapping a poor av in its presidential grasp, dragging said avatar into the orifice of Philip's shirt. MMMmm tasty, and stays crunchy in milk!Evidence: http://secondlife.blogs.com/photos/nwn/philip_linden2.jpgThat's how I see it, anyway.
