I'm constantly amazed that people want to keep RL completely out of SL. It reminds me of 1994 on the Internet when banner ads started appearing. Sure they're annoying, but you know what it means? It means THE MEDIUM YOU LOVE HAS A CHANCE OF SURVIVING, LONG TERM!
Last time I checked, the fate of the Internet didn't hinge on banner ads. Most people consider online advertising to be crap. That's why most browsers include ad-blocking software, and why marketers are starting to sweat.

Everyone knows that any new medium, like VHS, DVD, Video on Demand, and of course the internet, were not driven by ads. They were advanced by pornography. :D

Sony didn't want their Betamax system involved with porn, and wouldn't license the technology for such use... and now beta is dead. Secure online transactions were pioneered by porn purveyors producing pictures for palpitating porn purchasers. ;)

So remember, kids... pr0n is good for technological development! :D

This slight derailment is brought to you by the letters T and A, and by the number 69.

I hope the billboards have an opt-out option, as long as I provide them with my email address and CC#.

Not sure whats special about your but, there have been billboards in SL along time. BTW this apears to be more of a sales pitch than a "General Topic" the correct forum may have received a better responce.

I am actually planning to camp out in front of a future MetaAdverse billboard that rotates through all the people's campaigns, in hopes of discovering some cool new places I haven't been before -- as well as enjoying the graphic design. Even better, I aspire to make more new friends along the way. :)

Hint: Move out of range of it and back every now and then, or you'll have a looooong wait :p

I hope this website venture will take a policy of "on the advertiser's land only"

an alternative might be moving ads... like the side of a blimp, or whatnot, travelling through sims. this can be considered transmitting unsolicited advertising, which is against the Community Standards of SL.

He doesnt think that you should charge for commercials, how much does it cost you to talk or play a prerecorded commercial for 30 seconds? Its a hoax if you actually pay for such a service.

What?

I work in commercial radio, and if we or any other station took that attitude to our advertising, we'd be out of business! No, it doesn't cost much at all to create and play an advert, or do a live read in a link - but the money the advertisers pay us to promote their product or service pays for the studio, the electricity, the transmitter, the coffee - and my wages. Some "hoax".

Yep. Some are actually pretty cool, most are an eyesore. I like the Pixel Dolls boards.

Sorry, I wasn't aware there was a "Whip Up Some Forum Hysteria" forum to post to.

If no one watches, does it really exist?

"Second Life resident Rathe Underthorn is bringing billboard advertisements to virtual reality, brokering deals between advertisers and publishers. Advertisers pay for scheduled deployment of ads to be carried by a network of publishers, whose billboards display the ads to the digital denizens of Second Life. "

Well now that explains a lot of Rathe's posts doesn't it. billboards have been around since beta this is an old concept. Will ppl like it? Probably as much as watching paint dry.

(scarcasm)Good luck with that (sarcasm)

So you fancy buying a local commercial radio station, and paying the several million pound a year running costs out of your own pocket, without any support whatsoever from advertisers and sponsors?

Well, good luck to you. I look forward to hearing it.

I think its cool that he is willing to give it a try, I hope he does well with it because it seems like he is really putting forth the effort for it. Remember all you can do is try.

i seriously doubt it. we've been slinging the same old muddy drama and hateful rhetoric around these forums for over a year. it's never had any good result other than feeding, how does it go, the hate filled and bile spewing monsters among us. i suppose it also supports our need to feel sanctimonious and wash our pity over the poor unhappy souls who strike out against us.

why should we expect rathe to learn and respect the duties of communication and cooperation when we so avidly avoid them ourselves?

i love you i would never attack you this is just my opinion no offence bro i'm a good person i am et cetera

and yours was just sweetness and light, wasnt it? btw, you named names as well if you want to be like that.

So what was your point? That you dont like yet another commercial venture in second life and hope it fails? color me surprised. You didnt even really have to make the post.. we just always assume you'd disagree by default, Cat.

As I already said in this thread, MetaAdverse is, in my opinion, an extremely well presented and implemented service. It fills a gap that I have always said exists in SL - the ability to get your stuff known INWORLD - not in these crappy forums that 99% of people dont read - at a reasonable cost, in an interesting way. Of course, I actually use it, so I know from experience. As opposed to jumping on a few assumptions.

I hope it thrives. Sincerely.
