The blight of advertising billboards: coming soon to a sim near you.

Now that real-world advertisements are clawing their way into virtual spaces, it makes perfect sense that virtual-world businesses get into the banner-ad circuit too. Second Life resident Rathe Underthorn is bringing billboard advertisements to virtual reality, brokering deals between advertisers and publishers. Advertisers pay for scheduled deployment of ads to be carried by a network of publishers, whose billboards display the ads to the digital denizens of Second Life. Like web-based banner ads, exposure is measurable, and prices are on a per-impression basis. It remains to be seen whether there is much interest in this new service, or, if there is interest, how residents will react to a possible upswing in virtual world marketing.

In slightly-related news, Linden Lab has begun to auction off ad slots on the Second Life web site to residents via Ebay. As with earlier Linden auctions, I wonder why Ebay, and why bother? I suppose the point of this experiment is to see what the market will bear before committing to some sort of in-world system.

I was on a parcel that was streaming music and a commercial came on for some clothing store in world. It was somewhat surreal somehow. Billboards are as old as the grid, its not a new concept at all. They have come and gone and will return, and perhaps go again.

Ah, but at least they're 'next generation' billboards :)

MetaAdverse is a damned neat idea and slick implementation. Good luck to 'em.

Charging for commercials.. Have any of you guys seen the frasier episode where he trys out everything he endorses? Well billy M is the same way. He will most likely do your commercials for free aslong as you have a nice decent product.

Sadly enough no he will not play them 24/7 because he says that 24 hours of non stop commercials would not be too appealing to the average listener, he does however play them every now and then ie. Once every commercial break (once ever hour hour and a half). He doesnt think that you should charge for commercials, how much does it cost you to talk or play a prerecorded commercial for 30 seconds? Its a hoax if you actually pay for such a service.

Yup, Hey Eggy remember that one that was behind my castle and we put up that stupid flower wall to cover it up and ..and..and...LOL

Like Eggy Said Billboards arent new...they arent reinovated hell they gave out note cards in beta. Streaming music or advertisment...pfft they had sound bites in them that when you touched them they played a sound...so Nope Not New not Reinovated none of the above just SOS different year.

Not against them mind you just pointing out the falacy that they were not new and not coming as they are already here..;)

Hrm. I didn't mean to instill panic.
I posted a comment to that Clickable Culture entry earlier today that mentions, like Eggy did, that billboards in virtual worlds are not new. What is new is the advertising network / delivery / procurement system (I think). Earlier today I sent an interview request to Rathe in order to get more information directly from the source.

If anyone knows of earlier versions of sytems like Metaadverse, I'm all ears. I've not even been in SL for a year yet, so it's likely I've missed a previous method.

EDIT: To further clarify, I am talking about banner/billboard style ads that are similar in delivery and measurability to online banner ads. Not "all advertising in SL."

metaadverse answers a lot of the old billboard arguments by strictly approving campaigns and boards. only ads for inworld products are allowed; and boards must be standard sizes, unobtrusive and grounded (not free floating). any changes made to a campaign's content, or a board's location, must be approved before reactivation.

they also provide categorical assignments. there aren't enough campaigns in the system yet for that feature to be useful; but it already exists. i have a board behind my free money bush designated for clothing ads because newbies are always asking me where to buy clothes.

this kind of attractive, focused advertising makes sense to me. it's a far cry from eighty-by-eighty meter, non-phantomed, spinning boards flashing ads if my face everywhere i go.

Khamon, thanks for this info, where'd you get it?
I was looking for this sort of information on the Metaadverse site but couldn't find it.

I think MetaAdverse is a neat service, and just needs a little more critical mass in the form of placements on the Grid.

My partner and I have run three modestly-funded campaigns, and we've been happy with the interest they've engendered. And the provision of an open-source script to link in a remote notecard dispenser was a huge time-saver. I had the thing slightly customized and running in under two minutes, as I'm sure others did.

Calling in plays from the cheap seats again: I wonder if it would be worth their time to offer a premium chaining, or sequencing, service? It might be nice to have a couple of displays...say a "build-up" and a "punch line" or before-and-after...and to set the campaign up so that, whenever your Display #1 was scheduled onto a sign, your Display #2 was guaranteed to be next up.

Rathe, while a good guy, tends to ignore the common courtesy of "don't abuse sim resources."

My guess is we're going to see a bunch of billboard with llSensorRepeat() pretty much constantly running to detect (a) avatars who fly by (b) who clicks. While (b) is not a problem... (a) certainly will be.

Rathe, my friend, if this is the case... please reconsider! We're had many friendly discussions about lag cause and effect in the past, and I don't mean to attack you. But please reconsider if (a) is true.

Please, everyone, realize, this is ALL merely conjecture and hope that llSensorRepeat() will not be used to detect how many avatars pass within "X" meters of these billboards.

Other than that implementation, I actually think this is a great idea. I'm surprised it wasn't implemented earlier! I'm constantly amazed that people want to keep RL completely out of SL. It reminds me of 1994 on the Internet when banner ads started appearing. Sure they're annoying, but you know what it means? It means THE MEDIUM YOU LOVE HAS A CHANCE OF SURVIVING, LONG TERM!

It reminds me of my UK relatives... in one breath, they complain about the "cost of owning a television" (Brits pay yearly, regardless of owning "UK cable";), yet in the next breath complain about advertising on television (which isn't nearly as prevalent as US television... of the basic channels, BBC1&2 are ad free, ITV3 & Channel 4 are ad-minimal by US standards... Channel 5, no one watches).

Regards,

-Flip
