Bri, I think what people were objecting to more than anything else was the wanker insult. I thought it was uncalled for.

Who attacked the poster?

Edit: Additionally, I am on SL a lot, I witness many Live Help calls and handle a few myself.
I have never seen a Live Helper be rude to a caller.

I do believe personally that people hear an internal voice when they read someone else's text, and it is possible that the reader assumes a feeling that is not present onto the text.

I felt the initial post was putting down all of the hard work and effort that people put into Live Help. It was basically telling everyone that Live Help was a place for elitists, and that she didn't like the free, community service provided her.

My post was a reponse to let her and everyone know that Live Helpers don't do this for US$, L$, ratings, etc.. Live Helpers do it because they like to help others, and do it freely.

I didn't actually know she was talking about me or any of my responses in Live Help. I'm only human, and I may make mistakes or can be terse at times. I also think that I help sometimes, as do the countless others who put in more time and effort into Live Help than I do.

I saw it as an attack against Live Help, not against me personally, so I chimed in. If what I said was attacking (in my "known for being agitated or something (just purely hypothesis). " way) rather than trying to remind the initial attacker that we are volunteers, than I was wrong.

I asked for live help once and I was amazed how many people were ready to answer questions. How can I apply to live help so I can answer questions too?

Disagree

I completely disagree. I love the staff of Live Helpers. They have helped me in so many ways and I am in such great debt to them, although they probably won't take gratuities. But I think their the greatest that SL has to offer, because when your new, you always need a helping hand no matter what it is.

You know, I used to do that in another game. And you can't imagine the amount of people who actually came to us *demanding* help in the most insulting tone I've ever seen. And I'm not talking of just being a little annoyed byt their problem - I'm talking of people using "ffs come to help me NOW", the F*** word and other nice little things that sure as hell made us feel like "oh, great, we're going to be the kindest person i nthe world, whee! *cherry blossoms and flowers pouring from the sky*". So yeah, I guess that if at times we were a bit nervous and such - as probably the Live Help people are too - it can be understandable sometimes, eh?

Not excusing the guy for attacking all of live help for the experience (right or wrong) he had with one individual...

but many newbies do look at the live help (here or any mmorpg) as representitives of the company, and if they are frustrated with the companies product for some reason, seek to take it out on the first representitive they get ahold of.

Its why most mmorpgs want folks in that position that are good at sympathizing with an abusive customer, they are teh front line troops that take the brunt, unjustified though it may be. Is a sucky job sometimes and features a high turnover rate usually.

That was a dangerous post and not in the least bit constructive.

Honestly if that is the way she complains about Live Help I can only imagine the way she uses Live Help.

I am never amazed at the number of people who will look a gift horse in the mouth.

HR - as for your comment. Think about it.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAhA! *snerk*

*sniff* Heh. :)

Anywho...

From: Plenipotientiary Extraordinaire
Okay. That's it. I can take a hint.

Live help is for people who answer the questions, not for actually providing assistance - especially in the absence of any Lindens online.

Yup.

From: Plenipotientiary Extraordinaire
It's not a place to ask for assistance in order to try to resolve an issue which may ultimately crash a sim.

Yup.

From: Plenipotientiary Extraordinaire
It's certainly not to instruct someone asking a question so that he or she may never have to ask the same question again.

Hrrrm... Sounds like you're being a little dramatic there. Depends on if answering the question is possible, what the question is, and if the people in Live Help know.

From: Plenipotientiary Extraordinaire
Thank you for your freaking instruction.

Welcome! (Wait, I'm not part of Live Help. Heh.)

I am sorry if Plenipotientiary Extraordinaire or anyone else feels that they didn't get the help that they were asking for. As a live helper myself, I can honestly say we all do the best we can to help other residents. Unfortunately, we are not able to solve ALL problems or answer ALL questions. We do our best. As it was pointed out, we don't have any extra abilities then any other resident accept the abilty (for a brief time) to teleport to the person requesting help. That's it!. We are not compensated in anyway for this. We do this because we WANT to help we ENJOY helping people. It is often thankless, but I didn't sign up to be thanked I signed up to help. That of course, doesn't mean that we do not appreciate those out there (inlcuding the Lindens) who do thank us. It makes us feel good to know what we do is appreciated & that we are effectively helping many residents.
I have never, in a help call, saw a live helper be anything but nice (including the IM that's being talked about here)
There are alot of times we are absolutely swamped with IM's & it takes time to get to everyone. Not to mention some of us have several "jobs" in SL & such that makes it difficult if not impossible to answer every live help call.
I certainly don't have an issue with someone expressing their opinion about something, however I DO have an issue with name calling & any other form of personal attacks. Hank didn't deserve that comment no matter how unsatisified Plenipotientiary Extraordinaire felt. Hank, like the rest of the live helpers does the best he can & is always polite in the live help IM's.
Plenipotientiary Extraordinaire for the record, we as live helpers do not feel superior to anyone else. We are there because we honestly believe that others can benefit from our knowledge & experience. We do this to help the SL Community & many of us are also involved in other groups or projects that also benefit the SL community. If you opt not to use the live help again so be it but if you do know that we will resepectively, do our very best to answer your questions.

Baku I couldn't agree more.

Jack you can apply at www.secondlife.com/livehelp ( I beleive)

Hank: Don't quit Hank being a live helper. Live help & SL need you. You do a great job & u have so much useful knowledge. *hugs*...hang in there Hank.

Live Help
10-14-2004 13:22
I have used Live Help twice, both times for newbie like questions. LOL. Both times my questions were answered fairly quickly, the first time the helper was laggy, but she was quick to help and even made a few suggestions to try and fix the problem I had. (I couldn't get my debug menu to pop up) Granted her suggestions didn't work but that was hardly her fault. She tried to help and was polite. If I run into her in-world I would gladly rate her positively. Last night I asked a question and again was helped quickly and with extreme politeness. I will gladly turn to live help every time I need something because they work wonderfully. Big thank you to all the players who work for live help. I know that you don't get thanked much but you really do a wonderful job.

I am sorry that PE didn't get her question answered to her satisfaction, my suggestion is that she try somewhere else to get an answer, like a Linden. I hope she got everything fixed and gives Live Help another shot.

Cubey: I had had similar IM's from players who mistakenly read the creator as the owner. I guess easy done.

I am a live helper and will let our reputation speak for itself.

I used Live Help once. After agreeing that it was a tough question, two well-known, established "helpers" went on for nearly five minutes about how they were doing in real life, and what they thought of so-and-so, and so-and-so, and so-and-so....

The second time I reminded them of my question, one admitted that she did not know the answer. The other talked across us about the party she'd been to the night before.

I thanked them and said goodnight.

Luck of the draw, I think -- I know certain people in Live Help well enough to realize that they would never misuse it like that. Maturity is required both by helpers and aid-seekers, but any issue -- no matter how rudely it is presented -- ought to be taken seriously. It is, after all, largely a matter of effective, consistant communication -- and that is the priority. Where ever the fault may lie, in some of the cases cited in this thread, it broke down.

Just a thought... would it be a good idea to have a message or something pop up when you click the Live Help link explaining exactly what's happening??? Since a lot of the questions are coming from new players from what I hear, isn't it wrong to assume they know what's going on exactly when they click the button? Maybe not for the case that started this thread but in general, I think a quick message would save some frustrations from coming about. Something along the lines of
"Welcome to Live Help. This is a volunteer community of other SL players. Type your question in the IM window and it will be addressed as soon as possible. For questions or issues regarding account problems, sim outage, etc please contact LL Support."

...just a thought.

Live Help is called that for a reason. We are here to HELP in whatever way we are able to, whether it be with knowledge or, in a lot of cases a SOLUTION to a problem. There are many problems that are just out our hands to correct, which is why we refer you contact a Linden Liason or a phone number to contact Linden Labs. You must think about this: Is it better to have someone TRYING to help then to have no help at all? Who knows, if a Live Helper cannot solve the problem, at least it is known and it may be solved in the future, so even if the problem has passed, we would know how to fix it the next time. We are not called "Live Solution" for a reason, as it is impossible to say that we will definately be able to offer a solution to your problem.

Thank you for choosing SLLH, please come again. :)

I agree with Meiyo on this, there should be a notification when you click Live Help that these are Residents who can only answer general questions and not account specific or bug questions (in most cases).

Also, Anyone who is surprised that they get grief from Live Help or spamed by newbies asking questions or making random statements is a fool. Not saying anyone here has said that, but cmon, when you open yourself up to take any questions at all, you're going to get all kinds of crap. Anyone whose ever sat at the welcome area at a busy time will know that.

Anyone found carrying a personal conversation in live help IM's should be kicked out of the group and allow someone who actualy wants to help take their place. I've heard of this happening before and as someone who would love to answer questions and not care to be thanked, I'm very dissapointed in anyone who would use live help for their own personal conversations.

And should people who regularly run events even be in live help? I honor anyone who wants to legitley help out people, but if you know you're going to run events or be busy most of the time your online, should you really be in the group?

I agree. Live Help should come with a disclaimer: These are not Lindens. They can not solve your problems. They're merely experienced players.

Yay for Live Help!

Live Helpers should (and I'm sure are) be helpful and polite. People who use Live Help and want to complain about the FREE service, should strongly consider volunteering thier time as a Live Helper. It might give you a different vantage point. ;)

Guess we answered the question "why don't I join Live Help"...

Theres this, and of course my tendency to tell people to go fuck themselves from time to time.

Siggy.

If one decides to be a live help mentor is it something that can be turned on and off, if sometimes you want to help and other times you don't want to be disturbed?
