I was passing through the main Community web page just now, something I rarely do, when I noticed this new information section at the top of the right hand side bar: From: someone Recent Transactions
Last 10 things bought or given in-world.
<list snipped> My first thought was "Wow, COOL!" My second thought was "What a lot of sex toys and animations are being sold" My third thought was "Some people will complain about this" My fourth thought was "Some of those item names are probably violating the PG nature of the web site" My husband's thought was "Better not pass anyone a penis with my name on it" I'm still formulating my thoughts on this, but I can't get rid of the "Wow, COOL!" one! Anyone else?

Okay, now I'm sitting here reloading the Community web page every few seconds, while considering carefully the names some of my items for sale have, and whether they need changing....

First time I saw this there was "free sex anims" listed. I was like What???? There are Free sex animations in world???? LOL. Why was this implemented? Why weren't we given a heads up about it? Now we all get to spend the next few days renaming all our stuff and rebuilding vendors. Thanks for the heads up Lindens.

From: Merwan Marker What's the addy Lisse, I'm not seeing it? http://secondlife.com/community/index.phpNow I'm sitting here singing like a madwoman to the tune of the twelve days of Christmas: "Four poker tables, three gold slot machines, two pine trees.... And a Blue-ooo-ooo-ooo Jesus T-shirt!" My husband is already tired of me asking questions along the lines of "Do you think the person who bought the Jesus T-shirt is the same one who bought the stripper pole?" It's so nice to find a new obession this early on a Wednesday morning.

From: Lisse Livingston I'm still formulating my thoughts on this, but I can't get rid of the "Wow, COOL!" one!
Anyone else? Right now I can't think of a reason that it isn't good. It is not naming *who* bought the items, just that these are items being bought and/or shared. It could very well lead to people changing the names of their items, including some wanting to put the creator name in the title (which isn't such a bad idea anyway - easy recognition for me if I stumble upon something at someone's home and want to know who made it without having to edit the object). Some of the names do violate PG standards, but I'd say since it is only on the members' site, it should be ok. I mean, have you seen the events listings for today? LOL And those actually get seen on the public site if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks for bringing this up, Lisse. I do think this feature violates privacy, at least when it come to things given to people. One could argue that things for sale might usually be public, but something one resident give to another resident is private thing, including the existence and name of that item.

From: Anshe Chung <snip> but something one resident give to another resident is private thing, including the existence and name of that item. I can actually see this as being true and agree. For instance, what if I create an object that I specifically want to only give to one person. The name I give it would show up and if it was sappy I could get embarrassed. I also can think of a case where two people might be working on creating a new object to be sold, and they have a really great name for it and pass it back and forth for tweaking. They may not want that name to be taken before they are able to release their object for sale. So, I would say, I think it would be better if they just listed items that have been purchased. Not items that are given in any way.

I just saw another of my items on the list. It definitely lists products paid into, and it did not mention the product sold, only the name of the vendor that delivered it.
I agree that personal gifts should be off this list.

Guess I don't get the concern. Unless you named an object "SPECIAL PENIS MADE FOR PHILIP LINDEN" how would it expose any player info? Its no worse than the google search cache, where you can see the latest search terms.
*shrugs*

It is an excellent idea.
Do *not* get rid of the gift aspect, otherwise it will become useless. Given objects are how most vendors work that are automated, so really they are 'sales'.
If you want to make private a gift, then just rename the gift before giving it.
This is an excellent boon for the community and a very impressive feature which will spur greatly innovation and supply demand.
Congrats to lisse for posting this.

Not well thought out
12-15-2004 12:57
Personally, I see this as free advertising for those who are most well-established or most prominently located in the world.
It does not reward creativity in and of itself. It does not refelct true popularity in and of itself (purchase mistakes are and have been possible, returns and replacements are "gives", etc.).
I can see this being abused quite easily by someone with a minimum of scripting skill - log on 2 alts... one wears an attachmen that is scheduled to repeatedly give the other something (random or preselected, or from a list in a notecard) repeatedly over a period of an hour. Using a "wiggle" routine, both alts can be left online and "alone" forever.... the giving just goes on and on.... result - free advertising via this list.
This is absolutely and unquestionably not what was intended I am sure... even I am not that stupid. OTOH, this is a BAD idea if the goal is to be "fair" to all residents in the sense that LL does not favor one merchant/vendor/creator/resident over another.

Well, I'm sure LL will ban who ever does that and their alts.
Interesting idea, though.

Ever heard of Jon Morgan? Regnar Bell? The website and all public areas are supposed to be PG. That's why we have M sims. I am vehemently against prudes and religious zealots, but rules are rules...

You need to log in, so I wouldn't quite say they are 'public'.
As for PG, do we also have to monitor the forums as well now for offensive language?
