From: Zuzi Martinez Jeska! Ferran's naming names!
so who's actually seen one of these things? are there hundreds or thousands? are they temp-on-rez or permanent prims? does he have the land in all these sims to support permanent prims if they aren't temp-on-rez? anyone seen the scripts inside if there are scripts inside? thanks in advance for some answers if anyone knows these things. I suspect that these probes are emitted by a central station, or a small number of central stations, and that they spread from these points to provide proper coverage. That might explain the vast numbers and the speed at which they are flying. If you have a constant supply of probes being spawned at a central point, then I'd wager you can get blanket coverage of the entire grid using a continuously respawning army of probes. Unfortunately, such an approach would be resource intensive. Disclaimer: I've got no idea if that's what is happening here. I'm just doing a little half-assed guessing.

From: billy Madison Does it matter if its one source or multiple? I mean really? GET REAL. YES. If one source is spewing out enough of these things to blanket the world, then that sim is going to horribly choked. If there are a dozen such sources, the load on that sim is going to be decreased considerably. Please. A little critical thinking is not that much to demand.

Of course, editing this post to remove such a vicious comment does nothing because he quoted it, but... c'est la vie.

I once thought about doing this as a way to scan the entire grid for things like new sims, people online, etc etc.
I didn't given that I was concerned about replicating out of control and taking the grid down and because I was pretty sure I'd end up with something as evil as what we have going on here.
I think the solution is anti-griefing tools. Give us the capability for stabilizing our SIMs (ejecting objects via LSL) and certain group builds will become much better. Some newbie SIMs will be populated by this junk, but the senior ones (populated by senior players) will not.

From: Cadroe Murphy But someone would swear that my object caused so much lag that I turned them into a newt, and next thing you know I'd be on a scale with a duck Well, as far as I can see, this thread is completely out of control and off topic anyway, so I'll just ask, has anyone out there been able to catch a production of Spamalot? (A RL musical based on the fine film being referred to in the quote above....) neko

I have seen the lb objects in our sim Alviso. My friend tracked them to their source, a small 32 or 64 m2 parcel of land in a sim a few sims from Alviso. We called a Linden, who was helpful but said he couldn't/wouldn't do anything , and also talked to the creator ( who has already been correctly identified in this thread ), he was extremely uncooperative and would not remove them from our sim. Alviso's performance dropped radically at around the same time as the appearance of these scanners. Coincidence? Personally I think not.

I very seriously doubt that Pete is doing anything nefarious. He is known for his experiments . If the Lindens wouldn't do anything then A. there is probably no effect of these objects on the sim and B. they sound like they might be temporary on rez. Not sure about B because I haven't seen em.

I'm not naming any names and I'm completely aware that the following tale could be a set of remarkable coincidences ...
My neighbour sold me some land, before I could stop her she set the land to zero for me to buy. I'm aware of the existence of land scanners and I immediately bought the land before we'd even agreed a price ( luckilly she's a very good friend ). Meanwhile in the 20 or 30 seconds that it took me to realise what was happening and buy the land, a green dot on the minimap shot accross the sim and an AV landed smack in the middle of the plot I had just bought. That AV said nothing to the two of us and started prodding the land as if to edit/buy. I ejected him, but not before noting he was brand new, less than a week old. Now it's possible that a newbie will go looking for 1024m plot of land, but this was too quick and too suspicious, more like an Alt I'd say. It was shortly after that incident that we went on the hunt for land scanners in Alviso. We didnt find anything other than the lb objects mentioned in this thread. I would like the owner to deny/prove that these are not land scanners.

A newb was searching find in land and came across that land as soon as you set it is all. You don't have to fear land scanners as they serve no purpose anymore.

I was recently lucky enough to catch a LONG LONG standing plot i'd wanted go public rignt infront of me, and nab it up.. the map though had that plot listed as public, for about a day.. and it was amazing just how many people came by and poked and prodded the land there, at least 20-30 jus in the few hours i was watching, including the whole gamut from newbie to notorious
