I recently became aware of very large number of tiny scripted objects named "LB 2.5 " flying at 400 meters or thereabouts . After tracking them to a source (which was a considerable pain) I see that they come from an object named "LB 3.5". What are these things?

Mind controlling devices being unleashed by the feted conspiracy in order to subjugate good, prim-fearing men like Prokofy. Or, a new-fangled land scanner? |

LOL, Eggy, you remember recently when I told you I stopped my terrain mapping because I'd have to use automated romaing drones, and if I did that someone would find one and announce it on the forums and I'd end up with a dozen pitchforks in my ass?

Land banning scripts maybe? I've been unseated and ejected fairly often at that height of late...

Well, Cadroe, if you had named them appropriately, with a link to your website... and if they had you as a creator... I mean, you are pretty well known in this community. People would probably not freak out so much. _____________________

But someone would swear that my object caused so much lag that I turned them into a newt, and next thing you know I'd be on a scale with a duck

I appreciate your caution here, but I think that as long as the objects were capable of explaining their purpose, and land owners were given an easy way to opt out if they choose, then most people would fairly understanding. I'd like to think so anyway. _____________________

Or, a new-fangled land scanner? May be a land scanner, but definitely not new-fangled. I noticed them a couple of months back although I think maybe the version number was lower then. A script of mine lost count after seeing more than 300 distinct instances of the object. They are all at the same height, very very small, invisible and flying at pretty much max velocity. Quite hard to see or catch, tracking them back to their source must have been pretty tricky. They are all over the mainland grid, not a localised thing. Or at least they were last time I looked. Perhaps their owner will notice this thread and let us know what they are? |

If these are the same objects I discovered flying around my parcel a few months ago, they are land scanners and they belong to Pete Fats. When I asked him to remove them, he was cooperative in doing so.

The things I saw may or may not be land scanners, but they did belong to Pete. That was very accommodating of him. Did he make them fly away from your land, or perhaps just raise them up to where we're seeing them now, do you know? No, he just agreed to remove them. I helped him out and removed them myself. _____________________

Lance, let's try to avoid naming names.

Thanks for the sensible on topic responses.

Thank you to those who responded with serious attempts to answer my question.
Land price scanners and map makers are the only two uses I can think of for such tiny fast moving scripted objects. Can anyone come up with any more ideas? If my understanding is correct, land that was released used to become public land available for 1L$ per s.m. , and land scanners enabled one to locate that very rapidly and make high profit purchases. This motive for land scanner use has been eliminated by making land that is released go up for auction, I believe. Sometimes people will set the price for a plot to zero and have it available for purchase by anyone during the course of a sale to a particular party. I would think this is the result of lack of understanding on the part of a seller. Land scanners could be used to detect this and enable the scanner's operator to purchase the land before the intended purchaser completed the poorly executed transaction. This might be considered improper conduct by some who might then call on Linden Lab to intervene. Another problem situation can arise if someone accidentally drops a zero or two from the price and the parcel is purchased in the twinkling of an eye before the seller realizes their error. In normal circumstances land scanners enable the operator to avoid having to use the Find Land For Sale feature and make rapid purchase of below market priced land for resale or to swiftly acquire parcels that meet the desired criteria. If I understand correctly a land owner can stop objects from being rezzed on their land and can stop outside scripts from running but there is a height limit above which those powers do not apply. Landowners cannot stop other people from moving objects through their land at at any altitude. The purchase of land is intended to convey some some airspace rights but above a certain altitude it is open to all. Those who purchase land and think this gives them a claim to have no scripted objects fly through are simply mistaken, from what I can find. I invite correction of mistakes I have made in the above and in particular would like to be pointed towards statements made by Linden Lab that clarify a land owner's airspace rights. |

I dont think it needs a explantation.. lets face it.. people are already picking up there pitchforks and no matter what he says will justify it to most of you people. Its a sad world sometimes in the forums. We all know you will flame him anyway. _____________________

I dont think it needs a explantation.. When you release many thousands of scripted objects into the world, and allow them to roam the world on private property... that's alright? You aren't the least bit curious about the purpose? You aren't the least bit indignant about such a trespass? If this is simply a mapping project, then I don't mind. If it's land scanning, I mind. There are probably other utilities with which I would agree and some others with which I would disagree. The point is, people should have the courtesy to inform us of the presence of their probes. To do otherwise is dishonest, and tarnishes what might otherwise be a totally benign or benevolent project. |

But it would be nice to hear from Pete would it not ? |

actually recenlty my sim, the sim I own property in, was getting about 200-300 FPS. By it self wasn't a big deal, but what did bother me, was that I was only one loged in at that time. Because of this I started hunting down every script. In the mean time the sim litterly hit 1 fps over the next couple of days. Latter I even called in a lindon, and asked them if they could tell me if there what were the most active scripts, or any out of control scripts. She told me the most active script was some thing called lb (vertion number) But I couldn't find said script.

Ferran's naming names! so who's actually seen one of these things? are there hundreds or thousands? are they temp-on-rez or permanent prims? does he have the land in all these sims to support permanent prims if they aren't temp-on-rez? anyone seen the scripts inside if there are scripts inside? thanks in advance for some answers if anyone knows these things. |
