Cat, I have been here over a year now. One thing that has always been clear to me is that SL is a platform that will lead us into an era where online worlds and RL are so intertwined that they are going to be hard to distinguish between the two worlds (ie: communication, sharing of resources, buying and selling, etc.. An immersive web so to speak).

If you play SL to escape reality, then you are playing it because it is a "game". However, many will continue to debate that it is so much more. It is that so much more that makes the world so incredible.

Artists like yourself will help to carve out a notch of that new world. And that new world *will* happen. I for one would like to see people like you help shape that future rather than run from it.

Just my thoughts. :)

I dont play sl to make money. So how would the two meet/merge? More so why would they need to?

Catherine, money is simply what you make it.

It can be a force for greed and destruction, or it can be the foundation and structure of the most complex and wonderful undertakings of mankind.

I think if you left SL than it would become more of the former, and not the latter. So, stay around :)

The L$ is the accepted means of deciding who's stuff is kewler than whoever's stuff. Its a means of commerce, and should be accepted as such.

Tokin' Joints are worth L$25/box... maybe more, because they sell so well. Drum scripts are worth L$200... maybe more, because they sell so well.

If you just want to play a game and consider the L$ you have as a measure of your success (a metric that has been widely accepted by both the content creators and the content consumers), then so be it.

If you want to consider your L$ as some bits and bytes that are no more than little wiggles on a magentic media, then so be it.

Money is worth what you think it is worth. The stuff that you buy with your money is worth whatever you think it is worth.

Its all just a shuffle game...

OMG someone please just fricken kill me off.

What if some players dont give a !@#$ about money? I personaly have no problem paying my fees and trying to like on my land the way i see fit. BUT I cant read the forums, and I cant fly around the game without it being shoved down my throat. I for one am sick of hearing about everyones NEED to make money I dont give a rats ass about anyones money problems. I am sick of seeing "FOR RENT" "FOR SALE" or fricken advertizments every where i go.

My point Cat is that they are going to merge whether you want them to or not. SL is not, nor ever was (in my opinion) on a path other than a meeting of RL and Online worlds. Even if that is not what you want to happen, it *will* happen. By then it may not be SL anymore, but that is certainly where we are going with this type of environment. And something Philip himself seems to aspire to. You can't very well take over the whole world if you are just an online game. ;)

So, it is going to happen Cat. You can either stay in the creative process of this brave new world, carving out parts of it that will fit your needs (and probably the needs of others) - Hell.. Start a bartering co-op!! I would love to see that! Or an artists colony that is self-governed by your policies (sorry for the G word, but it could certainly apply). There are so many ways you could help make space in this new world for the things that you despise about your current RL world. And in time, those would complement your RL world in a way that it would still be an escape for you (just as we have hobbies in RL the things you do in this new world could be strictly hobby based).

It can all get a tad complex when you really start thinking about it. But this is your world just as much as it is mine Cat. You have as much right to do your thing here that will shape its future, just as I do. It is up to you to decide how you live your second life. No one can force you to do what you don't want (not counting the TOS of course). You are creative Catherine. Don't resist the future, help inspire and create it in *your* way! :)

We all gotta vent sometimes thats for damn sure. And the Money aspect of SL is as good a reason as any other.

I hate this time of year actually due to the money factors that come with it, I even feel it eating at me within SL as I could maybe buy some presents for people just to be nice or something.

But I'm just going to make what I can this year IRL and in SL.

I plan to just drink my way through christmas and wake up sometime around Jan 3rd.

And I don't care about your apparent hatred and appallment of seeing little green pieces of paper get shoved from one pile to the other, by millions of people, every single day, every single week.

LOL your kidding right.

One hand SL
Other hand RL

In my world I dont mix the two. That would be shitty.

As for RL I go out of my way to help others who are less fortunate LF. I take the time to look at those serviing me in the eye and I always tip 25% so apparently you dont know me at all.

Catherine,

I think you are missing a fundamental point here in what SL is all about. It is about ...well, whatever the individual wants it to be about. To some it is about art, to others it is about business, to still others it is just a glorified cool-lookin' chat room, to some it's a game, etc., etc., etc.

If it's not about money to you, fine. When I first started, about a year ago, I didn't care about money at all either. I found I enjoyed making avatars, I liked building things, and I met people from all over the world, which I thought was s pretty cool experience. At the time, that's what SL was for me. Using it as a business was not even a thought. Eventualy though, I discovered that running a business in SL is not only fun, but it enables me to do things I could never otherwise afford to do (just like in the real world I suppose).

For me, earning money in SL for me means being able to afford more land, which means being able to build cooler stuff. For some friends of mine though, it means far more. for several people I know, the money they make in SL means no longer having to have a "regular" job. This in turn means more happiness coming not only from doing something for a living that they enjoy but also from being able to spend more time at home with their families. Call me crazy, but I really don't think it's right for you to bitch at someone for finding L$ important if they make their living and support their family off it.

As I said, SL is whatever you want it to be. If money is not important to you in SL, then just do whatever it is that is important to you, and remember, just because someone else's priorities are different from yours does not make them wrong. It's simple enough to live without trying stop others from enjoying themselves.

Damn, this sure brings back memories. It's been a long time since your last anti-capitalist troll, catherine. Will this one also be followed by another one of your "I'm leaving SL" posts?
I have a suggestion to you. Follow your own advice and STFU about money.

I dont think naming them will do any justice here Cat.. you can believe what you want to believe, but the facts do not change.
