I have to totally disagree that other people should both try to decide someone should not care and / or ridicule someone for caring about what the rl gender is of people they cyber.
Its totally acceptable for people to feel it doesnt matter.
Its also totally acceptable for people to feel it does.
How can we argue what consenting people do is their own business in one instance , then deride them for caring who they are doing it with?
Its inconsistant as hell.
If it matters to one preson in a relationship - it matters.
Now if your own personal opinion is it doesnt matter - good for you. Internet dating is MUCH easier for you.
I also have a problem with people who decide how important online relationships are allowed to be for other people. Thats not anyone elses call. You hope people arent too bady invested and hurt if they are lied to. But its their life.
Never should we assume that if one person doesnt take relationships serious that no one should.
Neither should we assume if someone takes it very serious that others need to.
If someone is lying about their gender then when they encounter someone who really does Care. Then its their responsibility to either tell or date someone else.
Also people shouldnt assume becuase someone wont say their RL gender that they are gender bending
----------------------------- People are also being a bit discriminatory in their generalizations.
There are a number of Lesbians (real ones not pretend) who feel just as strongly it matters as any of the hetero men. I have had customers suggest whenever we suspect one of our customers is a gender bender we ban them immediately (a totally unworkable policy).
Now id never advocate Linden Labs change their policy , or anything alng those lines - but many would. They're entitled to their opinion same as people who claim it doesnt matter.
---------------------------------
I guess to sum up. If somone is able to Seperate RL Gender from their Second Life - Good for them
They dont get to dictate how others feel about it.
As far as those who do care - well they dont get to dictate those who dont either - But LL's existing policies already protect the gender benders.

This is probably not the point of this thread... but oddly enough I have found that women avatars are generaly treated kinder than male avatars. Oddly enough I find myself more comfortable around women avatars, than I do male, regardless of who is behind them. This I think stems from my RL feeling to that as well, while I myself am Male, I feel more comfortable around females. Just an interesting observation. I think with such oddity of avatars we have in SL, it really shouldn't matter who a person is in any shape or form as to how they're treated.

Here's my standpoint, as one of SL's longest-outed gender-benders. (and yes, this will be a jumbled mess of thoughts as always and in no way organized or coherrant.)
There are two different people, Nala and Me.
Nala is female.
I am not.
I still call myself a she and use the feminine pronouns ingame, even though others interchange them.
Have guys asked me my gender? Yes. Have I told them straight up what's what? Not always.
Why? Because it's honestly none of their business.
I control how much of my RL self comes into SL, and yes, it's true as it is in every circle here in SL, you are always treated based on how you look and act, and under most circumstances, it makes *me* feel better when *Nala* is treated like the girl she is.
Here's my thing about it all. As a guy playing a girl interested in guys ingame, I've always kept the rule that SL relationships stay ingame. This is for protection of both my RL self and the other AV's RL self, and this I've always made very clear. I personally think that should be a staple rule for anyone who goes this route, never to even remotely lead on that something RL could come of it.
But yes, guys still feel betrayed afterwards if they find out, and this is because the rule is broken. They no longer see the girl on the screen. They see the guy behind the monitor. This is where I always got confused. If the rules were made clear, then why all of a sudden the suden switch?
Because most people who play online games of any type cannot separate the avatar from the person behind it. They hold out the notion that they really will get something RL out of it. They hold the thoughts that the idea of a woman behind the screen is actually the attractive part, not the AV. They have this notion that the person they see is the person they get, and I'm sorry if they can't handle a wake up slap to the face.
Do I find it deceitful? Nope. As far as I'm concerned, very few people know *me.* They know Nala, and if that's all they try to find out about, that's all they get. If they want to know about *me*, that's a whole other ballpark.
Simple as that.

I see people as they want to be seen. so with my friend o that i told about before.. she are my friend.. probably for ever.. dosent matter if I meet her in a suit or in a gown...
She want to be and become a she. she are a she for me. with an experience in the world that few of has.. she has seen the world from both ”sides”.. I envy* her for that,, I will never be able to get/do that.
*Must be a better word for that.. as I am not jealous I only want to be able to do that..

I was just thinking....
Imagine a girl playing a man because she really wants to be with women....
and a guy playing a girl because he wants to be with guys....
They get together and live happily ever after. Ahhh, sweet carma lol

Taken from http://www.in2greece.com/english/historymyth/mythology/names/tiresias.htm Tiresias Famous soothsayer from Thebes who was blind after he had seen Athena take a bath. He was first and foremost Oedipus advisor. It was the shadow of the dead Tiresias that Odysseus consulted. According to another myth Tiresias was once out on a walk, when he saw to snakes mating. He sat there watching for hours, when the snakes sensed his presence. Since they did not want to be disturbed, they attacked him. Tiresias managed to kill the female, and at the same moment he killed her, he turned into a woman. As a woman Tiresias became a prostitute of great fame for seven years. Then, one day, the episode with the snake was repeated, but this time Tiresias killed the male, and so turned back into a man. When Zeus and Hera had a disagreement on which sex enjoys the most pleasure during intercourse they decided to let Tiresias judge, since he had experienced both. Hera insisted men enjoy sex more, while Zeus claimed the opposite. Tiresias then said, that if sexual pleasure could be put on a scale from one to ten, then men were at one, and women at three times three. This angered Hera so much she blinded Tiresias, but Zeus gave him inner sight (wisdom and the ability to see the future) and extended his life with seven generations.
