OMG?!?! TUNNELING DRILL??? If it is, I'll be SOOO excited... that's something I've hoped for on my "SL Things I Hope To See In The Future" checklist! :D I've recently crossed off "pogo stick", so "Tunneling Drill" is next. Further down the list are "Sandworm", "Functioning Yo-Yo", and "Working BBQ".

Well, unless 1.6 features a completely new and different type of land property that can be terraformed in such a way to make holes and such and maintain gravity properties... I doubt it'll actualy be that :(

It would be awsome... I'd love to see terrain caves, underground mole tunnels, underground cities, and the such! And to be able to actualy build in all 3 Dimensions down as well as up! But alas, as far as I know this isn't even on one of LL's famous "burners" (back burner, front burner, etc.).

Hey... remember Futurama? SUB-SUBTERRANEAN? :)

For that matter, I wonder what a SUB-SUBURBCLAVE would be like. ;)

GDC: Game Developer's Conference. http://www.gdconf.com/

It's the biggest industry convention in the US, I believe.

*peers*

However, I don't see Linden Lab listed as an exibitor, even though the GDC is right in San Francisco.

There is a simple explaination why LL would not be on the list, though that discusion/argument is for another thread. Read my sig...

well first off, i do not think these new sims are unground sims as som1 had explained in their own post... the ground map is something like 2d images or somthing so that there is never a hole in the land.. therefore it would be impossible to have underground sims with our current version of SL... LL aslso said that 1.6 is only a bug fix update :( so no Havok 2 there either.

the land they have shown on the sketch map seems only to be about 6 or 7 sims worth of land. If you look at the top picture in magelans expeirience page, the grid lines for that sticky out bit show that its not really that big and only a few sims worth

let me support this hi-jack for a moment..

the reason GDC was mentioned was because of this:

from The Second Opinion

From: someone
Come March 7th, GDC 2005 will go off at the Moscone center in San Francisco, and the best and brightest members of the game industry will be there by the thousands.

As it happens, the Linden Lab office is right up the block, and the whispering has already begun. What grand event will the Lindens unleash for folks who plan to be in San Francisco during GDC? Keep watching the residents-only Announcements board in the Secondlife.com forum, and find out soon!

I've got it... The new land will be the venue for the GDC... No?

Surina, exactly what i was thinking.. and more.

not only would it be a marvelous new land for SLers, but it could be used to showcase SL at GDC. the advantage would be that attendees of GDC would be able to see a pristine new land and how it goes from "brand spankin' new" to builds starting to pop up and beyond.. at the same time they would get to see a plethora of SLers and the wide variety we come in.

it's a perfect opportunity, quite honestly.. we could be wrong, but it seems logical to me.

Cybin, I was actually thinking the reverse...

Phillip has said "We are not in the game business" hence I see no reason for LL to display at a game conference.. However, the reverse could be a possibility for the future, if not now.

Imagine GDC 2006, instead of being held in a big expensive exhibition center, is held in a virtual exhibition center within SL...

I know the new land won't be for that this year... but next?

Well, technical definitions of "game" asside, the SL niche of "virtual worlds" and "virtual reality" certianly has it's place at the GDC. Cory (Linden) Ondrejka has done SL-related articles for Gamasutra (the industry mag run by the same people who put on the GDC) and LL has been in attendence at other industry conferences such as "State of Play" (and perhaps at previous GDCs?). Game makers would certianly do well to keep an eye on what LL is doing. :)

There is the cryptic newsletter item refering to the GDC though, which I hadn't noticed.

LL was also present at an E3 one year weren't they?

New posts are up, including one with a picture. Definitly not underground as theres the sun. Also its in black and white, so no telling the color of things.

Who took the picture? Why didn't they take pictures before?

Looks like shallow watters with sandy or rocky bottoms.
