From: Oz Spade ...My theory is that there aren't any natives, all dead, or some sort. Sad that they only have drinks, they'll be so drunk that they won't be able to tell a native from a rake. ROFLMAO What if the natives are some sort of primitive rake-people?! And on the design of the Malamute -- there's no way that's under 26 prims! I'd say they crashed because they were using the ol' hack that allowed more than the limit on prims, and the whole thing blew apart upon sim crossing!

Maybe the Lindens are alluding to breakbeat music? This page will give you a headache in terms of categorization (look to the links): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BreakbeatHey, what if the natives are our long-lost cousins... PRIMATARS?!?

ROFL! I love the gratuitous turret on top... you know, the one to take out the flying pterodactyl tanks.

From: Torley Torgeson ^ reminds me of a line of toys (not Transformers like Grimlock)... something called Dino-Wars or something to that effect. I have a few of these somewhere. I believe they came with little gi-joe like figure guys too. I remember a stegasaurous (my fave dinosaur at the time) very vividly. Currently they're most likely lost in the basement somewhere. You know some of the land is going to be named after drinks, if not the entire landmass. Scotchland has a nice ring to it.

Hmm..
02-15-2005 04:38
excellent point about the ship.. as soon as i saw it i had thought that while it had no brakes/breaks, it also looked designed as an underwater vehicle.
i think i'll do some research...

I noticed something strange in the blog... It mentions Carla, hunting seagulls and "you're next" funny look. I think it's a reference to an enigma I was taught years ago: From: someone A man enters a restaurant that specializes in seagull soup. He orders some seagull soup, just tastes it, pays, exits and jumps off a bridge to his death. Why ?

Who said the machine needs to land, perhaps it just hovers in midair letting passengers hop out... maybe its made from carbon or diamond prims... that way they can crash land to stop and itll never break up hehe... or!!! they could use it to drive over all the natives, get rid of them and then let up inhabit the place!
Tada! c, they shoulda broght me with them to the new land, id show them how to get things done! *gets knocked out by native throwing a bone shaped prim*

Whoa Nelly!!!
02-15-2005 16:28
ok, i'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet.. there's a massive amount of data i've just combed through and there are several clues to what is going on.. ready? here we go... the HMS Malamute: One thing is certain, the innate quality of the dog we know as the Alaskan Malamute and its superb adaptation to its environment. also, The Malamute speaking tribe or tribes eventually settled in the Northeastern area of the Seward Peninsula. (see attached pics) - there are strong ties to Jules Verne as well... Magellan says, "Von Hardwigg never had to deal with this crap." - Journey to the Center of the Earth. 1864. Trans. Lowell Bair. ...a fantastic journey through a lava labyrinth inhabited by giant mushrooms, mammoths, dinosaurs and giant primeval men. For Lidenbrock it provides a breath-taking insight into the history of the planet, while for the young narrator Axel the journey becomes a rite of passage. The popular image or stereotype of the scientist, represented by Professor Otto Lidenbrock (or von Hardwigg, or Oliver Lindenbrock in the 1959 film). Re: Barbenfouillis Class Projectile Rocket Vehicle - Le Voyage Dans La Lune (1902) director: Georges Méliès Not only one of the first fantasy films, but also one of the most peculiar. Ostensibly based on works by Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, Méliès transformed a serious subject into an absurdist comedy with highly elaborate sets. Méliès himself plays the role of Professor Barbenfouillis, who organises the first trip to the Moon. Subsequent adventures include being captured in a grotto of giant fungi by moon-dwellers who vanish in a puff of smoke when struck! Having the explorers land in the ocean on their return provided an excuse for Méliès to show the equally bizarre wonders of the deep sea. Because of its wealth of rococo detail and its theatrical approach, the film now seems almost surreal. The scene in which the Professor's capsule crashes into the eye of the Man in the Moon is still grotesque and, ultimately, very funny. Similar sets were used to even greater effect in Méliès' 1912 film A La Conquete du Pole with its hilarious 'Giant of the North' sequence. - i'd also like to mention that i'm enjoying the multi-cultural referrances.. Oriental, German, African-American, French, Mexican, etc... (wondering about "7 roots" a la Aguardiente) i'm also noticing a recurring theme of variety, else "flavorful".. also noted: recurring mushroom theme.. although that's more on Verne; however, there could be a connection between the colorful new land and the redundant fungus. (hmm.. i claim that phrase! it shall be a new song! "Redundant Fungus" ) - alright, i better stop before my brain starts to pulsate beyond the capacities of my skull.

From: Oz Spade Cybin, GDC March 7th?
GDC: Game Developer's Conference. http://www.gdconf.com/It's the biggest industry convention in the US, I believe. *peers* However, I don't see Linden Lab listed as an exibitor, even though the GDC is right in San Francisco.

Speaking of Verne and Journey to the Center of the Earth, don't forget Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World. Volcanic craters, jungles, natives, ruined cities, dinosaurs on the loose, and mad scientists and explorers running around on crazy safaris.

OK, going a little over the top now, there's Edmund Halley, John Symmes, and the Hollow Earth theory about fabulous jungles and Atlantis-type civilizations in the center of the Earth, accessible by huge geological holes under the ice caps and oceans at the north and south poles. The Edgars, Allan Poe and Rice Burroughs, picked up on the idea and used it in short stories and novels.
Sounds like a job for a submarine.

Something about all of this is giving me good vibes of such notable adventure games as Myst and The Longest Journey, both perennial faves of mine. The sort of immersive, evocative descriptions from Magellan's blog -- coupled with tongue-and-cheek witticisms -- only make it all the more fun.

Looks very much like the map in the background of the image at the top of the Experience page https://secondlife.com/community/experience.phpCould be neat if its through an underground tunnel of some sorts. The thing on the front of the ship could also be a drill of some sort. Wonder what the deal with the watercraft is... and what the large black mark/blob on the sketch map is.
