Pride Month in SL

June is Lesbian/Gay/Bi/Trans Pride month. Many cities have their Pride celebrations in June, as close as possible to the anniversary of the Stonewall riots.

I wasn't in SL last year for Pride, but I hear there were some cool events. Last year for National Coming Out Day, I made some t-shirts and we had a tea dance that was a lot of fun. Now I'm curious if anyone is doing anything for Pride this year. If there are no plans yet, let's make some! If anyone has an idea but needs help or land for it, I can supply both. If you've got plans going on already, I can help out.

Some things I've been thinking about:

- have another display of the SL AIDS Memorial Quilt, with another round of panel making
- bring the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to SL. Badabingo maybe? (sorry, SF inside joke)
- t-shirts
- makeovers!
- bring a LGBT celeb to SL for a discussion or party or something. Who would people want to see?

Any other ideas? Who's up for a Pride celebration?

Right on, Olmy! Thanks for taking the lead on this (again :D). Lemme know how I can help. I'm not in SL as much as I'd like, but I'm sure I can put up a display, help with an event, or something along those lines.

I second that! Ian McKellen!

If there's anything I can do to help, Olmy, let me know. (I wasn't in world for pride last year, either.)

Was there a parade?
Or would a parade even work in SL?

I vote for a big outdoor party.
I also have some land for something like that if needed, but it is in PG sim.

DYkes on Bikes! :D

The Rainbow (Pride) Flag first flew on June 25, 1978 in the San Francisco Pride Parade. The original flag was hand-dyed by Gilbert Baker, a San Francisco artist and represented diversity and gay pride.

In the early 70's there was a similar flag used to represent internationalism and unity among all of us on earth, but that symbolism faded and was eventually replaced by gay pride/rights symbolism. Demand for the flag and its popularity increased after the assasination of Harvey Milk and George Moscone in November of 1978.

The original flag used 8 colors, the current one uses 6. The original colors represented:
  1. hot pink - sex
  2. red - life
  3. orange - healing
  4. yellow - sunlight
  5. green - nature
  6. turquoise - magic
  7. blue - serenity
  8. violet - spirit

Hot Pink andTurquoise are no longer used.

Wikipedia entry for Rainbow Flag.

I wasn't in SL last year for Pride, but I hear there were some cool events.

there was a parade through several of the new sims.
we could make floats again (laggylaggy).
maybe we could get some island sims moved together temporarily for the parade.

A little gay history trivia:

The Twin Peaks bar, on the corner of Market and Castro streets, was the first gay bar in the U.S. to have clear window allowing passers-by a view the patrons inside the bar. The entire facade of the bar is comprised mainly of large glass windows.

The bar opened its doors in 1972 and is known for it's, umm, slightly more mature crowd which, combined with the primarily glass facade, has earned it the nickname of "The Glass Coffin". ;)

If you're ever in The City, swing by and see a bit of history.
