So how does one establish themselves, short of parading round Ahern twenty-four hours a day to show they can be "trusted"? I don't know if I'm the best person to ask, since my street cred is probably in the mediocre range. But one thing that occurs to me is that probably everyone who has a strong reputation in SL at this point has failed publicly at least once at something. So, I'd say failure shouldn't be too discouraging, and persistence is a virtue. Who fetes the feted? _____________________

As with most things, what you get out of SL is directly proportional to what you are willing to put into it. To each his/her own.

I fail to understand the assumption that I have done nothing for this community but moan and whine, and I should try and start things myself. I have done! With my limited building and nonexistent scripting ability, I attempted to set up the co-operative project in Cass, a progressive new model for land ownership. It fell by the wayside after not one single person turned up to any of the meetings scheduled to discuss the matter. SL's so-called community might be there, but it is inert. New ideas, if they are not from one group of people, are simply ignored, while ideas from those people are taken on with open arms. I don't think anyone's making any assumptions about you Charlotte Getting projects started that rely on a group of people is difficult. It doesn't matter if you're a week old or two years old. It can be a real challenge and very frustrating. There are plenty of groups out there doing great things that prove it can be done though. I personally try to avoid group commitments because I know I'm not very good at keeping up with obligations and my RL can be very unpredictable. I always have more ideas than time and it's taken me a long time to learn to say no to people. Sometimes it's just a matter of finding the right people to work with or doing as much as you can to keep things moving forward on your own. SL definitely requires cutting people a lot more slack than you would in the real world. Sometimes you might start feeling like SL should be renamed "Cat Herder: The Game!"By the way, I enjoyed meeting you in world a couple of weeks back when you dropped by my store ![]() _____________________

So how does one establish themselves, short of parading round Ahern twenty-four hours a day to show they can be "trusted"? It's not a matter of making yourself visible or not. It's simply a matter if you know what you're talking about and not going on and on about something. Ideas are ideas, whether tried and true or failed. As in real life, respect is earned, not given. _____________________

I've had negative experiences that... well, I'll just say they are feeble and pale in the light of the overwhelming positive experiences I've had here in Second Life. Amen Torley. My positive, fun and memorable experiences far outweigh the few dull or unhappy moments. _____________________

LMAO...Thank you all for the Chuckle this Afternoon.
Personally I have nothing to say as my friends, compatriots, and even some that have discord with me have said all that needs be said on this subject for me. Otherwise thank you for the laugh...LOL _____________________

If you spend too much time on the forums you get a warped view of the community. Myself, I don't think one could be mistaken for believing that the game is dominated by b*tchy, whiny people, obssessed with their own personal vendettas and the need to bring them up at every. single. opportunity.
*points up a bunch of posts* Thankfully, most people are better than this ![]() _____________________

Okay, I skipped some pages. I might have missed the answer.
I'm gonna check out Darklife and that combat game I can't remember the title of. I'm involved with some rather... interesting... groups in the game. I have a "job" "dealing poker" and spend a lot of time playing that. I buy a ton of clothes (not just for dancing at clubs, which I only do to enter contests with the ton of clothes) and then sit around in them playing Tringo to build up money (hey, if you're good at it...) when there aren't kickboxing events. Aside from this stuff, since it all seems to fall into Charlotte's list of not-actually-doing-stuff stuff... What is there to do in SL? I used to play There, and I was a top buggy racer... given the physics in SL, I can hardly go out and do that, soooo... suggestions? |

I have no love lost for the lack of community. I LIKE being a gruff recluse. I didn't come here for the people(save the few that invited me), I came here to build. The community could die as far as my personal concerns go. If people who want community manage to form it good for them. I'll be glad people found more ways to enjoy Second Life -- but someone like being left alone.

Too true, Pirate. It's ammusing, really. Most of these dedicated posters I'm constantly seeing in the forums I hardly -ever- see inworld. Maybe they have their own private sim or hangout spot, excluding the rest of SL? I just find it ammusing because I constantly see them making judgements on the rest of SL and it's "community". But then again, i'm really good at being wrong. I post alot , and I do have my own sim, where I tend to spend most of my days, cos I ain't forking out $195 a month to have a sim I don't use!I DO venture out, cos of course I have to shop and buy all the wonderful things that the Content Barons make, I must admit I rarely venture outta my sim, but then my best friends and my shop and home etc are on that sim, but I wouldn't say I exclude the rest of SL! My sim is open to the public, we have many shops on there, and I love it when people visit I do ocassionaly venture out to Ahern or the sandboxes, but normally find myself let down with the amount of animosity and bitchiness going around lately.Slootsville has its own lil community, we tend to hang out there in bunches, but we never turn anyone away! The more the merrier is what I say, alot of groups I find ARE cliquey but I think thats just the way it is, even in the real world you find that, SL is what you make it, and thankfully I am making the best out if it I can, and I invite others to share that with me! Ok that was a ramble cos I kept getting interrupted, sorry if it makes no sense :/ _____________________

Im either in 1 of 3 sims Carlisle, Eagan or Hawthorne at one of Our stores or Im Out n bout flying or putting out vendors in Malls. Other than that I mostly work on new stuff in Carlisle. _____________________

shadow: you are working to hard.
charlotte: gosh girl, i judge everyone too. all the time. but i don't post or expound on my judgements for i think everyone has their own way of being entertained, and has the right to enjoy what they enjoy without needing to hear my opinion. when i find i am not having fun in sl, then i dont go to sl. you might give that a try. so sayeth: Marilyn _____________________

I love to hang out on my plywood platform in the sky and work in peace. I did not realize I was such a burden on Second Lifes community. Whats funny is I spend 99% of my time making gestures for people to express themselves while being social.
