My av is modeled after the real me. Spent a lot of time getting the face to match. Not an exact copy, but as close as I could. Compare the RL and SL pic in my profile if you're curious.
Then again, in RL I don't sport a windup key and a doll outfit. It's based on a character from an old movie/opera/short story who was a windup toy mistaken for a living person.

Nope. Pretty much totally different.

Oh and like Xtopherxaos, my avi has bigger boobz, though I'm catching up lately from drinking so much beer.

I wish I looked anything remotely like my av. Darn it. :(

Hehe, then, of course, I'd have to worry about things like fleas, and shedding, and trips to the vet... grr. :D

My av (well the one I wear most of the time) is a total idealized version of me. Tho I think I got the booty to look pretty much like my RL one ;)

Those that wanna look just like themselves IRL go for it - but I never could figure out the point in that, since I already "am" me - and with the possibilities there are in SL...but anyhow here's the list of stuff my av gots that I dont:

Really cool interchangeable hair - if I could bust out the afro-poofs ponytails in RL I would!
Anime wide grey eyes
Perfect makeup all the dang time
boobs that defy gravity
flat tummy
Nice toned long legs
Really tall - I am sucha shorty RL just about 5ft so I wanted to try out being TALL
Nary a wrinkle in sight

Hmm actually now that I think of it, I think my av's feet look just like mine rofl
(YUCK!)
Any ex-ballerina's out there too? You know our feets look so horrific ;)

I made my av look like me because I find it to be more immersive with the virtual world. It's more like I'm "in" SL instead of controlling a character on the screen.

I do wear the occasional costume, however... like a shark with a frickin' laser on his frickin' head. :D

I never thought my avie looked like me at all. Over the weekend I was tinting my new (Gorgeous, Fantastic) Chip Midnight hair and my son walked up behind me and asked me how much that cost. I thought he meant the hair, so I told him. Then he asked who I had to send the pics to. I was totally clueless (not an uncommon thing). He said my avie looked a lot like me in some old photographs. He dug out a photoalbum and found one of me and his older brother when his older brother was a baby. The Chip hair was a little longer and I don't have pale lavender eyes, but it was strikingly similar.

Funny thing is I didn't make the avatar. Someone made her for me, someone who has never met me. Then there was this music in the background... <insert Twilight Zone.wav>

Many people tend to like their own features, it's quite natural to like your own physical appearance. That might be hard to swallow - but studies have been conducted over this sort of thing and have been proven fairly accurate. Of course it's not quite as true with American/English women - they tend to be "unhappy" with how they look more often than their male counterparts...

My AV is much much taller than me. The hair cut is very different. But the face is strikingly similar tho' exaggerated for cartoony effect.

You mean you don't have a giant white beehive hairstyle in RL? I am shocked :)

My avatar looks a lot like my RL self, though I have slightly different hair and a current lack of tan from spending so much time working. :)

I look like my rl self. I have a tan in sl, which I can get rl but rarely do because I have to burn it on :P. Face is as accurate as I could make, same hairstyle and such. Had to create prim whiskers cause it's not possible to make it right with the sliders. body is precisely my rl height but since everyone in sl ignores their height in meters and just makes themselves arbitrarilly tall or short, I'm actually short in sl where as in rl I'm fairly tall 6'3"+. I'm a little heavier around the mid section irl :D , figure my av weighs 210 and irl I weigh 230. I wear exactly the clothes I would irl. even made myself some prim leather sandles that match my rl footwear of choice. so ya, blue jeans (always), leather sandles (usuall), t-shirt and something over it either a button down with a collar or sweatshirt/sweater. My goal, like irl, was to be dead average while still standing out ;). I chose to model myself after me because I'd rather be extraordinairily precise than extraordinairily creative :). I also have an rl pic in my profile. One difference between rl and sl. rl I constantly wear a green A's hat. so far, my sl hats of just looked odd. Anyway, I'd comb my hair irl more often if it were as easy as in sl ;).

I was an Uru Live refugee, and thus was accustomed to playing a character that resembled my RL self. When I started SL after Uru Live ended, I randomly picked the name "Matthew Fauna" under the mindset that I would be starting a "second life" with a completely new identity. I also created an av that, albeit realistic, looked nothing like my RL self. Shortly into my trial, however, I realized that I simply wasn't "connecting" with this newly created identity.

So I created a new account under "Beatfox Xevious" (as Beatfox is the name I most commonly use on the internet) and made an avatar that was as close to my RL self as I could get it. I was much more satisfied with this appearance.

This was all before I realized the extent to which avs could be customized. When I saw the variety of animal avs that others had made, I knew that I simply had to bring to life my Beatfox character that I had designed years eariler. Nowadays I hardly even touch my RL-me av.

And for the record, Beatfox looks nothing like the RL me, save the blue eyes and short stature. ;)

For me, this was a chance to look/be something totally different. I act the same as my RL self though.

I don't feel a need to escape my rl self, and I have never had a bad experienced revealing my self to people online. I'm just here to socialize. In the book snow crash, by Neal Stephenson, a leading author in the field of cyber punk fiction, modeling the avatar after the rl self was consider to be a form of elite status, and was a way to recognize skilled users.
Because there is no one who knows your own body better then your self. Being one self worst critic, it was a form of zen meditation. Reveling your own personal views of self, and a chance to challenge and question those beliefs.
Plus in a world where you could be any thing. Looking like your self requires one to be act as they would in rl and be accountable for their actions as they would in rl.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. To be "yourself" in a world where you can be anything means something. My av looks as much like me as I can make an av look right now, (I'll get better at it) most of the time. (for instance, I'm 6'2" - on the far end of the bell curve for a girl. So I also factored in the 'everyone's taller on SL' thing and put the height slider to 90) I do tweak it now and then. I'm new, and over time, I'd like to experiment with things, using myself as the base.
The clothing is totally different though. :) And hair is hard to do still.

On the other hand, it's perfectly ok to look nothing like your RL self too. SL is supposed to be where anything goes, IMO. Part of what I'd like to do is spread that way of looking at it.

Man, Rickard, the reasoning you go through to arrive at such a conclusion. I think I've gained a little more insight into your analytical process after reading this. ;)

Created my Avatar like me
11-27-2004 20:33
Hi there,

Im a newbie...just joined like 3 days ago and when I was creating the look for my avatar, I wanted to make her look as close to me as possible except part of it is what I wish I could be for instance, she is a taller version of me, that is the only thing I would change about the RL me if I could lol.

hehe of course not! :D Why pass up the opportunity to have prettier, larger eyes, a more slender figure, perkier breasteses, firmer behind, washboard abs, multi color eyes, fabulous always perfect makeup and hair that I can change from one fabulous style to then next as fast as my whim changes :p

hehe, although I do have to say, Rickard you did a wonderful job making your avie look like a mirror image of your RL self, and it looks FABULOUSLY HOT! :D

My AV is pretty much modeled after me...
Although my RL hair isn't as "full" anymore. Still just as spikey though. I'm holding on to my youth... I'm 30, and I still glue up my hair (literally... Elmers!) in spikes in all directions even though there aren't as many spikes on top anymore... Damn Genetics!!!

I wanted my avatar to look like the real me and She likes to change her makeup, haircolor, hairstyle and outfits very often like me too.

Thank you Baccara for this great thread!
