Cristiano made a great statement in another thread, and I'm going to quote him here.

One more thing - I will say that although you raised a great issue, your poll is an example of using a poll to get the exact response you are looking for, by wording the answers a certain way. Your answers are all leading, and skewed toward your position that this is a problem.

It's a creative 3d environment where you can pursue whatever it is that makes you happy, including making a buck if that's what you want to do. I think if you spent as much time trying to enjoy yourself as you do thinking the world is somehow going to hell in a handbasket because not everyone wants the same thing you do, you'd probably enjoy yourself a lot more.

No matter the variety of answers, SL is not what you think it is Catherine. Though I am sure you are not alone in your vision, it makes you no less wrong. It still does not mean you do not have your place here. :)

I refer back to my posts here:

SL isn't really anything. It would cease to exist if weren't plugged in. In a relative scale of time, it's a blip. A painting lasts longer even if it were burned the day after it was made. The build you make in SL has far less effect on the physical world it only abstractly exists in.

So business platform, artistic digital canvas, or social tool -- SL is nothing without us. Together. Because without us, it can just be unplugged and cease to exist.

To me, Second Life is all that and a bag of chips. It might as well be some spiritual retreat for me to get hypercathartic, now that I think about it. On the rainbow, we have yellow and orange. But we can have a blend between those two. And other colors, whee! Not to mention all the fancy fadershadering. And oh, don't forget shiny. :)

If you wanna make a buck here, try your hand at it -- it's expanding. You wanna get creative for non-profit? Sure *stares at certain people*. And hey, you wanna do both, and more, goodie goodie gumdrops. You may do something that reflects your direct line of work IRL (especially if you're a computer programmer, hehehe). You may not. You may mix and match like some sort of DIGITAL LEGOS! MUHAHAHAHA.... but eh, as long as you're enjoying your Second Life, it's all good.

Sometimes, there are no words.

Just a smile on your face. :)

lol aw!

I wasn't trying to be nihilistic! Really!

I was merely pointing out that we distort time in our linear comprehension of it. I won't get into the details, but I was merely suggesting that the world of SL while it does exist in an abstract way within our world; it is actually only a representation of physicality. In our reality, it's merely a pattern or electrons and magnetic "field patterns" (to keep the dictionaries out of this) which really don't exist in the same time-frame that we are able to perceive (have YOU ever seen an all the electrons around you moving? ;) )These patterns essentially would essentially cease their existence when we unplug the system -- and the magnetic "field patterns" storing data on the hard drives at LL's hosting facility would simply fall into a schrodinger-esque suspended state of existence.

To give a parallel -- a painting takes up a lot more of our perception of time basically because we can hold it. It moves slower and occupies a lot more space and matter.

... ok.

Maybe that was sort of a nihilistic thing.

But I did turn around and say that this blip only exists because of our ideas together. It's kind of like this "event horizon" of our minds that we extend out of it's boundaries and into a stretch of time that we can comprehend. Maybe that's why we get so confused sometimes. ;)

I'm totally new to SL. only been here a week, but for me, its an escape from reality with a healthy does of realism. I dont have to deal with doing stuff that i dont have to, and I dont have to be there if I dont want to... I dont have to be social, or even work for that matter.. which is the Reality. Yet, If I want.. I can do work.. I can go to a club.. I can choose to build a house and pay rent... but.. the difference is these are choices. Thus.. the Realism.

So SL is what you make it.

LL needs to run testimonials like this in their full-page ads. Show a big happy picture of you, nursing a baby while riding a unicorn.

Ah the hubris of youth.... to be so knowledgeable and condescending all in two simple sentences.
