Kinda feeling bad and lost

Some friends and I began to organize some events at European friendly hours, following different themes. Such as today's gothic party, a party on 1st of April and a party next weekend that will be followed by a pet auction. I always enjoyed pet auctions in other worlds and there was no pet auctions in SL during the hours when my friends and I usually play

Well, I was very surprised when receiving the following IMs from Feliciaa, whom I have not known before. Maybe somebody can help me what to make of this. I am relatively new to SL and maybe I overlooked some rules? Please help me out, I am really lost now and feel very very bad. I really did not want to hurt anybody

Do what you want with events. There is a good chance that people are looking for events at all hours of the day. If you have guests who want to be there, go for it!

"I made this" is sort of lame concerning events.

I see trivia, bingo, building classes, show and tell, whatever, all events. All hosted by different people. So what.

Have fun, we need people to host events, dont let one person get you down.

She may splash your name on the forums, but everyone will think she's quite out-ethics for doing it.

Think of it this way; Do you really think anyone will care that she says, "No, I came up with the idea for Pet Auctions first"?

Nobody here owns one event or another. And since you aren't running it when she's running hers, you aren't even competing.

Few people in the forums will care. They'll likely say just what Loki did. It's an empty threat, Sir, and I believe you should go ahead with your plans. If she isn't uptone about it, send her my way for some Auditing, and perhaps a False Purpose Rundown.

I am just afraid she and her friends will start mobbing me now. She is a long time resident, I am not...

Toss in that protecting ideas is laughable and no one in their right mind would support your claim to an "idea". Stealing your auction code, or other tangible items is another matter.

Anshe, do as you please. No one owns the rights to an event "idea", or any idea for that matter. Claiming such is childish.

I had this idea, when I was young. I'd create a little universe in my head and make things, like umm guns and cars and houses and stuff. Oh and kitties. Damn you Lindens stole my idea, I shall slash your name across the forums and everyone will know you stole my idea!

just wanted to say, events in European time? Oooo I will look these up I am a European and haven't had the opportunity to go to many events cos of my timezone. Yay that someone is doing this!

By "fight for it", what this person meant is, "I told the Lindens I'd like to do pet auctions and they said ok whenever wherever you want." There was no "fight" at all.

Pet auctions are pet auctions. Bingo is bingo. Don't be concerned with the name at all. If the upset resident wants to differentiate, let her call her pet auction "The Original SL Pet Auction". Wtf, people are going to start complaining about what events are named?

What insanely poor character to try and intimidate somebody that is new. If you find them spreading lies about you or trying to interfere in any way with your events, report them.

It looks to me like "Upset Resident" was concerned about the possibility that your event would be mistaken for hers. I think her issue was just the name. BTW, I seem to recall a thread from February which is related to the first auction. Read through it. Its interesting reading.

Personally, I don't approve of harassing IMs to make your point, but I can understand her concerns. The way I see it, you should have your event, but call it something else. If she and her supporters still come after you, then they are in the wrong.

Anshe, I think you did the right thing by bringing that conversation to public light-- that somebody is trying to control what events take place in the community through intimidation is a community issue.

I've held a lot of events in my time, and each time I've seen someone else doing the same type of event that I was the first to do, I am thrilled that they found it so enjoyable, that they want to do the same thing. To me, it's quite a compliment to my creativity. There have been word scramble games, and even specific types of classes I started that others picked up and carried on with. I'm very grateful to them.

Making a popular, well-liked event available for people to attend more frequently and/or in different timeframes, is a positive contribution to the community.

There's a huge difference between stealing or copying an event game's components (models, scripts, etc.), and holding events similar to those done by others where the event is done without 'mechanical' support. It's apples and oranges.

I hope the original host will rethink this, and come to see it as complimentary.

I'm sorry that this upset you My advice is to just ignore the person in question. Pet auctions are hardly an original idea, as you said, they have existed in other environments. The person in question can hardly take credit for the concept. You are more than welcome to host whatever event you want. The person in question is always a proponent of "it's only a game, we're here to have fun" so I find her ims ironic but not surprising, as I have always experienced that kind of hypocrisy in SL from certain people. I would advise removing the IM log and just summarizing what was said to you. Definitely keep doing the event, please! Don't let one idiot discourage you.

I totally agree, the "upset resident" c;ear;y explained she wanted the wording changed, and as you posted the previous thread, she did indeed fight for that event and name! Keep your event, but change the name...

Then "upset resident" should have just said "Hey, could you please change the name of your event". That is not what she did, she came out swinging and ended up looking ridiculous. She threatened her, instead of talking to her, which is totally uncalled for. Those ims are pathetic, though not surprising.

PS - Anshe you may want to change the name to Slave auction or something like that just to keep her from carrying through on her stupid threats, but please don't stop hosting the event.

The chat log is one sided, and who is to say what was said between both parties before the log was posted, Cristiano, you of all people should not be so quick to judge and assume things, especially with out hearing and knowing both sides.

Well there are several things on this front, not just this one incident.

Ideas being used that are directly copied from another person. Well unfortunetly nothing is copywrited so anyone can do anything they want. (Events are the worst cause people have been doing this alot lately and we are not just talking the name, but idea and structure)

Just think of it like this , what if someone took the idea that you did and you were the first in sl to do that one.

Using someones idea in most circles is concidered the sincerest form of flattery.

Other that that I believe the event in question has not be held lately.

I know the "upset resident" in question, and as I said, I don't find anything about it surprising. True, I do not know what was said before in the log. However, just the tone of that is pathetic, no matter what came before it. "I'm going to run to the forums, I'm going to tell everybody you're a fake, I came up with this first, wah wah wah". It contained threats and childish behavior. I am not being quick to make a judgement, I have dealt with the "upset resident" in question for a long time.

How do you know that she took the idea at all? I was unaware of the Pet auction, and yet was familiar with them from both TSO and There (with that exact name among others). People can have the same idea without it being theft. And I'm sorry, but you don't get exclusive use of that idea forever. This is not a freaking patent. What about the first person to host trivia? Bingo? And those people who created slot machines?

Regardless, all she is asking that the wording of her event be changed, I don't think she is asking too much, and I think she has every right to be upset.
There are so many possibilities in SL that there really should not be any reason that the Ash's event can't be a little unique in it's own way, even it is just a different name...
So Cristiano put your personal feelings aside, and see the actual problems this could bring.
For example..my clothing items I refer to as Sensual Designs. what if someone came into the game and was named Sensual Midnight and name his/her clothing Sensual Designs? Not only would one be confused if it was something distributed by me, but I would be upset knowing that I was the orignal founder of that name and would like to in some way be original and unique from other designers.
