BLACK AZTEC CORN.
The same corn raised by the Aztec Indians over 2,000 years ago. A fast grower and heavy producer. Corn kernels turn dark blue-black when mature. Good for fresh corn or for making decorative corn meal. But if I was allowed to choose a fruit ![]() YELLOW MEATED WATERMELON. This is a very fast growing and compact plant that bears 5-7 lb. "icebox" size melons with a crisp, sweet taste that can only come from this variety. Bears in 70 days. _____________________

Is now a bad time to point out that potatos and corn are both in fact:
starches and not vegetables? I think this is the reason why most Americans have bad health / loose bowels. ![]() I'm down with Soy, but only if I'm allowed to research how to make it taste like other stuff, first. _____________________

If you want to be really picky, corn is actually an annual cereal grass, and a potato is an edible tuber. That's what I get for growing up in this part of the country, useless horticultural knowledge. ![]() _____________________

That's what I get for growing up in this part of the country, useless horticultural knowledge. ![]() Yes, but both are still classified as starches as opposed to vegetables. Let's go to the food pyramid! I will bow to Diabetic.com as an accurate source for nutritional info: ![]() Ho! What's that at the bottom? Starches? Is that corn on the cob? A baked potato? Actually, there's even a sweet potato there. And what's funny ... check out veggies... is that a tomato? ![]() "Healthyvermonters.info" had another Diabetes organization picture, but didn't solve the tomato question: ![]() _____________________

The actual leafy parts of a potato r even considered herbs ![]() I saw the eye roll, so I'm hoping that means you've never actually boiled up a bunch of Potato greens and slammed them down. Just a note on that, Tomatoes, white potatoes, peppers (red and green bell variety as well as chili and paprika) and eggplant belong to the nightshade family, a botanical genus called Solanaceae species, which also includes tobacco and the poisonous "deadly nightshade" belladonna as well as the toxic herbane, mandrake and jimson weed. They are all part of the Nightshade family. All of the Nightshade plants contain Tropane Alkaloids, Atropine, Solanine, Nicotine, Scopolamine, Chaconine, Tomatine, and others. The tuber part of Potatoes are eatible, but all of the green parts of the potato plant contain some degree of the poisonous alkaloids. Even the potato tuber can be poisonous when it is left in the light and begins to turn green. Avoid any potato with green skin. Nobody has mentioned lima beans here as a favorite but just in case, it's good to note that they contain small amounts of cyanide. Boiling them in a pot with no lid releases the harmful cyanide poison as a gas so then they become eatible but since I am not real fond of lima beans, I've always thought this was as good of an excuse as any not to eat them. Speaking of cyanide - avocado lovers (such as myself) should not eat the pit or skin because it contains cyanide. In fact, the pit has enough in it to kill you. Fortunately, this stuff dosen't taste too good so not many people have been assasinated by an avocado. Potatoes however, are the serial killers of the vegetable world. . _____________________

That food pyramid is out of date!
They are remaking it. I couldn't find any pictures of what it will look like, but here's one from "Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy" by Walter Willet. ![]() Awww too bad potatoes... and rice... ![]() _____________________

And the antidote would be? *coughs* *coughs* *passes out on floor...... oh a penny!* Well if your experimentation with serial killer vegetables has led you to be red as a beet, dry as a bone, blind as a bat, mad as a hatter, and hot as a hare then you are probably suffering from the dreaded anticholinergic toxidrome. My best advice would be to get to a hospital quickly so they can pump you full of charcoal and physostigmine..... But failing the ability to do that then I suggest you put a Stevie Nicks Belladonna album on the CD player, slug down as much activated charcoal as you can possibly swallow and try to enjoy the sure to come, terrifying hallucinations. Since a coma generally follows, try not to go to sleep. . _____________________

Someone bad-mouthing potatos??
Seems to me anything that looks like vegetation should be considered a vegtable. Hell with them thar new fangled charts. So if it grows on the ground, in the ground, or on vines or bushes, I'm gonna call it a veggie, and if It's on a tree I think I'll call it a fruit, just for fun. And what the hell is wrong with you people?!? Asparagus?? Gag me with spoon! Next you'll be saying Brussel Sprouts or whatever those little balls of skunk cabbage are called. _____________________
