We have exciting plans for this Sim. In fact, we are developing our ideas solely around supporting the SL community: economy and content. We are creating two initial commercial ideas; rest assured these will compliment and build upon the great work in the SL economy and world. We have carefully chosen our ideas, we love this place, as we know you do.

Before we can get going we need to verify the Digital Rights Issue with Linden Labs; we will be writing to them over the coming few days to get their input and support.

I can leave you a few tid-bits of stuff we are thinking about:

revenue streams to support the in-game economy - narrative creation – real world anchor points – educational use – personal appearances – real world fashion – retailing inworld/offworld… plus a lot more.

Also to dispel some of the rumours:

We are not the Playboy corporation.
We are not Disney.
We have no agendas just the desire to explore and help create something exciting.
We are commercial based, but we are fans and active participants.
We will be suporting a charity and promoting good causes
We will need help.

We are a London and Chicago based Innovation and Branding agency.

That’s it for now, we will let you know more in a few days. Would love to hear your reactions and your input. We are building this around all of us.

I think it would had been nice if a private individual were to had won, instead of Big Business. You know, someone who does not have access to un-limited resources. They should make rules that Big Business cannot bid in auctions, and as someone else said, they should just be offered to buy a sim. Let those who have limited resources bid, and those who are Big Money Business buy.

Congrats on the Island

Fizik,
You seem to be too new to SL to know a whole lot about of anything that goes on here . Of course I only wish you the best in whatever you do . I do want to tell you that a lot of the more seasoned users are watching you and everything you do right now so choose carefully how you approach anything you do and who you choose to get involved. A LOT of eyes and ears are on you right now and from what I have seen in the Last 5 months of being here I can tell you that a bad move will leave you sitting alone on your $1200 Island , not to mention the $195 a month upkeep fees. A careful evaluation is in order here .

Good luck and Watch your back :) Ill be visiting from time to time .

Since you have complete control of a secluded island, that gives you a unique opportunity to act with governmental authority. Now, I've gone on enough about self-government elsewhere, so I won't harp on about it here ;) But however you do it, I'd like to see you do something charitable. For example:

Remember Aps' Clocktower in Tan? She's found a way to keep it up for now, but for a while it was doubtful it would stay up.

I think someone suggested having an in-game graveyard for the avatars of players who have passed away IRL.

Many people (including myself) have talked about making an in-game library but haven't been able to follow through.

I've heard of an SL university someplace, and I'm sure they would love more space to grow and hold classes ;)

There are many projects that should be supported - and could be supported - by a government that values art even if it doesn't generate profit. Keep in mind also that there are probably a lot of skilled artists out there who are using all their prims. Many would probably come and build just for the joy of it, and maybe a little pocket money on the side. ^_-

So that's what I'd like to see: support the arts.

On a side note, there are lifers out there who aren't that happy with their land. You find a decent number to come take land out on your island and help you construct whatever it is you want to construct there, and you could defray your monthly costs by a great deal ^_-

The Elf Is Ticked Off!

A fricken company bought the island to sell me some sticking levi's or whatever. LL if ya wanted to sell to a commercial co. then just sell out and get it over with. I will find another online game if that is the case. If this was done without your prior knowlege then I am telling you right now this kind of crap completly ruins my SL experience. I get enough commercialism shoved down my throat in RL I come to SL to get away from it!

One Ticked Off Elf!

Catherine Cotton

P.S. I dont care what "good" they say they are going to do its a company trying to sell me their CRAP.

The auction was for SL residents not companies boy o boy am i ticked off.

AND I take back my Congratulations post as well!

Maxx why not ask me?

I will tell ya :) ...

I live a life that is busy, and stressful. Also full of billboards, t.v., news, newspapers, commercials, magizines ect. I have gotten to the point that I hardly even watch t.v. anymore

I log onto SL to unwind and "get away" from the daily stresses. For me I enjoy SL I forget about the stress at least for a little while.

Now ppl want to throw RL products into my fantacy land. That completely puts me back into exactualy what I have been excaping from.

So what would be the point for me to be in SL if it becomes a commercial entity. There is a huge difference between buying a pair of jeans from Fey or a Dress from Pahoa and buying a pair of "the gap" or a "pepsi" from a vending machine. At least in my mind there is a huge difference.

To me an elfin has no business wearing a "gap" pair of jeans. An elfin however would buy a pair of pants from her friends.

I think everyone is refering to this comment by the island owner.

"revenue streams to support the in-game economy - narrative creation – real world anchor points – educational use – personal appearances – real world fashion – retailing inworld/offworld…"

Personally, I have no idea what he is talking about. It's way to vauge. I don't even know if "he" is a he and what this whole "we" things is about.

I do know that SL is kinda like a black hole in relation to the "real world". Stuff comes in but doesn't come out. I wouldn't worry about the new island being turned into an Amazon.com store anytime soon.

I also wouldn't feed the FUD by trying to guess what this he/she/we person/group is trying to do.

We, lol, will all see soon enough.

And beyond the fact a company won the auction, what makes Catherine so mad about it?

Anyone?

I can only speak for myself here, but I feel the same. This is "Second" Life, not a virtual first life. At least that's how I've though of it till now. Now we have a true commercial sim, bought, owned and run by an outside company specifically to import advertising into our world. A real world presence in our second life to sell us things, real things.

It does take a lot of the magic away. A whole lot.

Like it or not, it's not just as simple as opening a new avenue for us to explore, (as I'm sure the corporate spin doctors would tell us ) it changes the whole premise of our world, our game. It's still called Second Life and the same people run the show, but I feel it's a truely different game than when I joined. A lot of the stuff looks the same, most things more or less run the same, but what we call SL now, is not what we called SL a few months ago. That game is gone.

"retailing inworld/offworld"

YUP hit the nail on the head there.

I wonder if more visible support by the Lindens won't be necessary to create a good atmosphere in SL for business ventures.

I wouldn't get too worried about commercial sims. $200 a month! Gonna be next to impossible to justify a SL presence unless they are marketing something directly related to SL. Like a external IM client or external modelling tool. I don't see how they could make back their monthly fee otherwise...

Well basically linden already did that I think ... this is the same island that was there before right? Totally not visible unless you are there? Can only get there by teleport? North East of DarkWood sim in the middle of an uncrossable ocean?

who they are
01-08-2004 12:34
"We are a London and Chicago based Innovation and Branding Agency"

meaning: they are a MARKETING AGENCY. Ugh. Sorry, did I say that out loud? Note the cutely capitalized Innovation and Branding. A Google search for "London and Chicago based innovation and branding agency" led to DMOZ, a web directory. DMOZ has two agencies listed as Chicago based branding agencies:

Re:invention - Chicago based image consultants

Source/Inc. - Chicago based brand consultants specializing in packaging and positioning for consumer goods

sounds good, eh?

For London based ad agencies, DMOZ offers:

Headlight Vision, Ltd - independent brand consultancy based in London

Moon - a branding and communications consultancy based in London

Mountainview - a London based consultancy in strategic branding and global brand positioning

"Yum! I can't WAIT to have some!" (R) (C) (TM)

Right. Is a branding, marketing and positioning agency owning a plot in SL (TM) going to serve YOU or Linden Lab (TM)?

You can also infer he is from the London office because of the way he spells rumor...

paulie!

That is exacly what I am saying, thanks for doing the foot work!

Lindens tell em to get the hell outta dodge! HA!

-----

You can stick em on an island but that "business" will bleed to all of SL you can bet on it.

I'm usually teh first to leap onto teh boards and proclaim doom for the world and teh end of all life in the universe because teh Lindens made changes to flying that I didn't like. :-)

But in this case, I'll wait and see. They say they are planning to do things that will benifit the in game players, and are going to try and work with us.

I'll assume that they really mean that until I see otherwise. They certianly seem new to SL, so I expect they will make mistakes based on ignorance and we will have to help them learn. So welcome to SL! Asking for ideas is a great start. How about setting aside a part of the island as a museum for cool prim-heavy builds that have a hard time finding space now?

Umm.. cant resist a little gloom... :-) If however, they mean help us by, "Providing new and exciting ways to view advertisments for usefull and wonderous products!" and nothing more.. well... I *DO* breathe fire in game. :-)

Isn't that pretty much the definition of a marketing company?

Yes, thats the definition. But small companies and even small groups within companies can do cool things sometimes. So lets hope this is the case.

At the very least, we should be as helpfull as possible in giving suggestions.

Like... do not, ever, EVER start buying small plots of land on regular servers to place billboards. Even if they are designed with style and grace and award-winning. Thats the quickest way to get yourself on everyones bad side.

If we're really lucky, they may be LEO BURNETT! Check it out!

About Leo Burnett Worldwide

Founded in Chicago in 1935 with eight employees and three clients, today Leo Burnett Worldwide, Inc. operates a global network of over 200 operating units across 83 markets, including 97 full-service advertising agencies and a variety of specialty marketing services including direct, database and interactive marketing, sales promotion and brand consulting. Leo Burnett's mission is to be 'the best in the world, bar none, at turning brand buyers into brand believers,' and does so utilizing its proprietary Brand Belief System (tm).

Leo Burnett currently handles many of the world's most valuable brands including McDonald's, Walt Disney, Marlboro, Kellogg, Tampax and Nintendo. With worldwide billings of $8.278 billion in 2000, Leo Burnett is a wholly owned subsidiary of Chicago-based Bcom3 Group, Inc. (www.bcom3group.com), one of the world's largest marketing communications holding companies.

Oooh! Oooh! Can I be the first to be exposed to the Brand Belief System (tm)!! Please, please!

No, LEO is not Disney. LEO is the Nazgul (Tolkien reference - Nazgul are "black riders" who scour the land, taking victims for their master, Michael Eisner...err..Sauron) of Disney.
