Do you believe in Negative Ratings?

Seriously how can you believe in Negative Ratings? What does that mean? I believe I have over 350 negs but I do not believe the system works. Blake in all due respect Kris has made the point. The poll makes no sense my brother.

In all seriousness, I am not convinced it's the system that is the problem. I think it may very well be the way people utilize it. A lot of folks seem to use it as retribution for some percieved or real slight, the problem is they usually hit you with a neg in all 3 categories rather than just behavior. Selador has suggested making negs cost considerably more and I think that could be a solution, although I wouldn't mind seeing the whole system reworked.

There should be no non-toggable mechanism available to players through which one player can effect your standing and stipend directly, even a little, maliciously.

Negs are not just used for neg'n negative behavior. They are used when one player just doesn't get it their way that day. The more popular that player, the more people they can motivate to the target of their angst. I have seen the leader of one of the biggest groups in SL of all time call for everybody to neg a particular player in group chat, and several players say they'd do it right away. They didn't even know why.

How about this.

If you WANT to be involved in ratings, turn it on. You can reap some minor reward for being high on the list.

If you do NOT WANT to play the ratings game, TURN IT OFF. Your stipend will be computed with some acceptable baseline. The ratings selecting on the pie menu will be grey'd for any player with it toggled off.

Turning off ratings ENTIRELY REMOVES YOUR STATUS. You can't just switch off when you think you'll get neg'd or if you feel like being bad that day.

If you're not involved in ratings, you can't receive them...or give them. You can't even see them possibly in profile. This gives players that want nothing to do with ratings exactly that.

Remove NEGATIVE numbers. You can't be rated below 0, and if you remain at 0 (or below some acceptable threshold) for too long, you get auto-removed (since you're obviously not playing, or are just in it to rate others).

This would make ratings what they should be; a game within the game. Not something that is forced on all of us and is easily gameable, as has been proven many times.

I don't think you should be able to neg rate with no message.

I've gotten neg ratings while I'm off line, for crying out loud, so I have no idea who or why.

I've never given a negative rating.

And if I truly want to judge someone by their ratings, I look at how many they have given, not how many they have gotten.

I recently received a negitive rating from someone I do not even know. I left them a message asking why ?, since I don't remember bumping anyone or any issues with this member. I've had no response from the member. I was also offline at the time I received the negitive rating, is weird. However I received an email from SL telling me so n so rated you negitively.

I am a fairly new member to this community, I try to mind my own business. I am polite when spoken to, as I have no reason not to be. The only thing new that I've done is purchase some new land. I am still learning the do's and don'ts. If I teleaport somewhere and realize another member has arrive at the time I have, I move away so not to be rude, I have apologised to one person even though I know I have no controll over where I land, But felt like I needed to apologise to them for bumping into them, to which they said "NP".

I feel if a person is going to give a negitive rating they should at least explain why, Perhaps there's a misunderstanding or such. I try to handle things as an adult, if something has happened, try to work it out. If it can't be worked out, well then if you receive a negitive rating you'll know why.

Personally I think the only thing that the neg rating system is good for is creating drama. Ask yourself when the last time that you judged someone by how many neg ratings he/she has? Probably never. So, all they do is piss off the person it was given to and it is almost every time answered with a neg rating to the giver who becomes more pissed off too. Either that or one of the two couldn’t care less but probably wind up neg rating each other too.

I just do not see the point in neg ratings. They foster a hostile environment and create more drama. Darko’s neg rating campaign highlighted the uselessness of the system quite well. I think there is way too much drama already and would rather see the system go away altogether.

I have seen some, what are to me, really ugly buildings in SL. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I would not neg rate a building - someone has put a lot of effort into it and I just wouldn't do it.

I have never given neg ratings although I received 2 sets of triple negs, one of which i was able to speak to the person who subsequently removed hers and the other one was from an idiot.

take the good with bad its punish ment to greifers even thouh its being exploited i say remover the rating systems on personal av mabey jusyt building and behavior and a log of who gave it to you and for what reason.

Actually that doesn't solve anything whatsoever, though it did take me a little time to figure out what you were actually trying to say.

I am in favor of the ratings system only because of the stipend tie-in. of course, you could remove the negative ratings altogether -- but I find it useful sometimes. Usually when I find someone in SL that I don't like, they have a lot of neg ratings.

Not to say that I give 'em out like candy. The only times I gave them was when ... let's see ... I was at an event and someone had sent some sort of script over that made lots of noise and completely disrupted us and wouldn't go away. The other time was a griefer who negged me 3 times ('course, I probably shouldn't have risen to the challenge but oh well).

I am unwilling to change the neg system simply because in my experience not too many people pay attention to it other than griefers. Most people just base their opinion on someone in world from their own experience, not anyone else's.

I have 3 tripple neg. ratings. 2 were from Yankee fans who did not like a sign I made proclaiming that the Yankees suck.

The third is from someone who said he just felt like giving out neg. ratings.

I also have a neg. building rating because someone did not like one of my builds.
