Since this is a topic that's becomming very popular, so..I present the question. State your case and or feelings.

I do not believe in Negative Ratings..I do not condone it on anyones part. You are a mirror of your own Image. Negative Ratings are just a tool of retaliation and insult. I do not believe in Negatives. Negatives breed Negatives.

This is a general statement..not aimed at any one individual. This is my opinion.

Yes, but only well-deserved ones. I think I've given one negative rating in my six months here.

Neg ratings are like flying off the handle at someone. You can't take it back.

The one time I was sooooo close to neg rating someone (he was bombing me outside Lestat's) I stopped, closed the Rate window, and just asked him if he knew that was frowned upon.

Turns out he was a brand new newb and didn't know the ettiquette. I ended up helping him with getting stuff out of objects, finding battle sims and finding an apartment. He was soooo thankful - he said he loved what he saw of SL and didn't want to get booted for actions he had no idea might have got him banned for griefing.

So - if I feel like neg rating someone (and its only popped into my head twice), I wait and decide to neg rate them the next day if I still think its worth it. It never is.

Sure you can.

Either neutral or pos rate discounts a neg.

Of course there must be reasons why it is allowed. I have my suspicions.

You can see possible results in which it may cause, an esculation of turmoil and hate in which results in emotional hardship which in turn results in a lost account. I do not think this is advantagious to Linden Labs either.

If you look at my profile you find about 20 triple neg ratings. This makes me one of the most often neg rated people in Second Life. Well, most of them I received for one of following reasons:

- Banned person from mall for selling freebie items
- Stopped person from using bug to buy up First Land plots, called liason
- Refused to do business with a certain realtor who screwed over people (and is banned from SL by now)
- Reported people who repeatedly griefed shoppers with weapons and particle bombs
- Neg rated, then told that neg rate would be removed if I lower price on some land
- Neg rated for trying to make a profit in Second Life

Five such incidents and four alt accounts or buddies each and you have 20 tripple neg ratings.

Mmmm, I think this answers the question, doesn't it?

But it still shows in the profile as a neg rate....right?

Or am I completely off base?

The overall total may be fixed but in that Negative column it still shows the original neg rating?

i voted no because i don't generally give negative ratings. the only impact neg ratings have on me are the number that someone has assigned. i'm much more prone to avoiding people who have given a dozen negative ratings than people who have been given them.

I have never given one and I have never received one.

And if I gave one, I am sure I would receive one in return, so what's the point?

No.. you actually remove the rate altogether.

Someone triple negged me, and when I asked why (I really HATE when they don't include a message) he said it was 'an accident' and un-negged me.

I had 2 triples, I only have one triple neg now.. and given who the POS was who gave that, I consider it something to wear with pride :p

My other negs on building were 'because I don't like your treehouse' and 'I don't like your hobbit hole'. Well, to each their own. That's what the ratings are for if you feel that strongly about it :)

i didn't have im to email checked when i received my triple neg so i have no idea who it was from. i wish they'd take it back and reassign it now so i'd know whether to be proud or not.

but they've probably forgotten all about it.

Well of course I believe in them. I've seen them with my own eyes. As for whether I think they are effective or used correctly, I would have to say no, they aren't. What's the use of neg rated someone for bad behavior, if they can just turn around and neg rate you back, plus get thier 5 friends/alts to do so also.

Howver, I have run across people who are still moderated or intimidated by the threat of neg ratings, and so it may help police SL society in some small way.

I believe in them because I recieved one- so I know they exist. If you mean- do I believe in giving them...Hell no. To me it looks worse if you gave alot of neg rates then recieved em. People that use their alts to give em are even worse.

I voted yes, but only under certain circumstances. It's very unusual that I will give out neg ratings, and will only do it under extrenuating circumstances, and will only do it for the ratings that pertain to it (such as a build, I would neg rate building but not behavior or apperance, unless those pertained to the build also). Same thing with Positive ratings, when I first meet someone, i'd just pos rate their apperance if I liked it, and before I leave, if they were well behaved, i'd pos rate their behavior. I think it can be a good system if used right, unfortunatly, used right isn't always an option.

Blake you really need to start putting 'other' as another option on your poll's dude. This is a subject that has merrits on BOTH sides of the fence........ Do 'I' beleave in Neg-rateings"? Yes I beleave they exist. NOW do 'I' use them is another question entirely! I for one will NEVER neg-rate a person.... ever...... for any reason.... It is just not within me to do so...... I just won't rate is all, simple............

And I have never been Neg-rated before either. Will it happen in the future? Maybe. But it does not concern me either way really. Peoples feelings are what I focus on, not numbers or figures. We are NOT bots but people, and I for one rather be more involved with people than numbers or lables.

Peace & Love, those are my concerns, not neg-rating people..............

I think we know what Im talking about with my Post at the top as to the reasons I don't believe in them. There's always one in the crowd..pure example of how negatives breed negatives. LOL. I did not say.."Do you believe Negative Ratings Exist."

LOL Kris..

I voted yes, although I appear to have 1 neg rating for behaviour, yet I rarely leave my land :/ It's when ppl neg rate you for fun, or just to be an asshat that gets me.. I have never neg rated anyone and I don;t think personally I would, but I believe we should all hav ethe choice to do it, griefers are a pain in the ass..

I only wish I could forum neg rate the asshats...

Adam, maybe we should not have posted that we have never been neg-rated, I am sure someone will now go after our virginity...

Thanks, Blake. I always wondered what that word meant. How does this help? It still leaves the original question ambiguous in its meaning.

Think of it this way... substitute 'Santa' for 'Negative Ratings' and ask the question again?

'Do you believe in Santa?' .. ok, I think we ALL know what that means... Do you believe in the existence of Santa? But wait... we KNOW Santa doesn't exist.. so by your own reasoning, this question must in fact mean 'Do you believe that the propogation of the myth of Santa is a positive or negative force?' or something to that effect, in the same way that 'Do you believe in Negative Ratings?' isn't about belief IN negative ratings...we KNOW they exist... it's a belief in the rightness or wrongness of the system in place that facilitates them.

It's all in the wording, Blake. And yours is very often ambiguous. As are the poll choices you offer. With a little more thought, you could make polls useful and meaningful in the context you meant them instead of degenerating into a discussion on what you actually meant in the first place, and why you didnt offer the correct choices.
