8000 emails a day... passing through the Linden servers and they aren't doing a thing about it?

Unbelievable. Is he sending them as IMs and they are getting passed to you? You could turn that feature off so they don't get sent to you any more. Sure he'll cap your IMs every time, but what can you do if the Lindens aren't going to do anything? Damn.

I would imagine they are all coming from the same object, which is sending them all from the same sim... you could use message filtering on the server to spam and delete anything coming from that particular sim.

This comes down to whether or not the Lindens will accept responsibility for actions occuring within their system. It goes along the lines of suing gun manufacturers for gun deaths.

I believe that Linden has a responsibility to remove the offending person from SL. I don't see how this caused $500US damage and whether it did or not, there are tools in-place to stop these messages. To cry that you did turn off the IM forward function and the messages still came through does not keep the onus on LL to keep your mailbox free of spam.

So, we have a mixed verdict. LL continues to RUN from having to take a consistent stand. Someone will do something to the system that will screw up 50.0001% of the public and THEN they will spring into action. But as long as we have the occasional stalking/spam/griefer situations come up, LL will only tell us that they investigate every complaint (read: they read every complaint and prolly email it each other with smartass comments about how stupid we are).

Count One -- harassment -- guilty. Hang the ex by the nuts and toss his ass for life. LL is also guilty of negligence if this story is true and the ex isn't tossed.

Count Two - spam and costs associated with spam in mailbox. LL not guilty. Welcome to the New World Order. You cannot do anything about it. The only spammers ever convicted sent BILLIONS of emails. No one has time for tens of thousands. Block his address, block anything from the domain, block whatever you have to.

What a shame that someone with the talent for coding would use it for such an unadmirable ends.

Sophos, if the person has your email address and the object was sending those emails to you directly, did they use publicly available information to target you? For example, a contact email on your website, which is listed in your forum sig?

ehm.. this could be but i think its not the case..

and to get back to the 500usd question
i lost that because my mailserver crashed.. this server is stationed in the usa.. and used by several other companies.. well long story.. comes to this: im fined 500usd coz my incoming emailflow caused the server to crash... then i get charged 500 usd

dont ask my why

besides... all communications of my company were shut off for 2days.. i dont think i lost any orders though...
but thats my own fault fo giving up company main adress in sl.. i plead guilty :-D

This kind of thing uses system resources and lags everything and everybody. This is not just a spat over a girl -- LL was attacked, and every LL user was attacked. This is RL criminal behavior.

Hey Lindens, this kind of thing drives your customers away. (That's a bad thing.)

So many companies using a single mail server should have better ways to protect itself. That is a lot of traffic, but that important of a server should have had backup/redundant servers or security measures in place to prevent this.

It was just a simple email flood. The flood from the single source should have been blocked either by automated means or by the system administrator.

To think they charged you $500 for their lack of competence is beyond me. I'd tell them to take that money and hire a new administrator.

To think I can bring all those companies to a standstill with email / orders by sending out 2 emails a second

That statement made me laugh considering Linden Labs had no way of queing mail or rerouting it while their current mail server is upgraded. LOL!
