Attacked in-game!!

I have been attacked last 3 days ago..

it has been an attack done on purpous .. only done against me..

Reason: my new Girlfriend

Attacker: her ex.

the attack was IM's from a certain object.. changing names and messages randomly, sending them via IM AND email.. I have had 26000 emails so far, and im still getting about 8000 a day..

so 1 mailserver, and 500 USD later: LL does not feel it has been their responsibility to protect me against this stuff, and no compensation for this loss WHATSOEVER has been issued to me.

The punishment by LL for the attacker is unknown.. i'd say. BAN FOR LIFE
The punishment by me and friends is : banned from a total amount of land of 8 sims.....FOR LIFE

Then LL need to take a much harder stance on this.

There is actually very little, griefing wise, that can really affect people in SL... but this is one of the things that really can have a major effect, and if they don't stamp on it now, it'll just increase.

When I recall events and conduct in the past that resulted in suspension, I am shocked that LL is not intervening in this situation. Once again we see an uneven enforcement of the TOS/CS, an issue that repeatedly creates dissatisfaction and unhappiness among members. It is an unprofessional, haphazard way to do business.

Some members have been suspended and issued warnings for much less, under vague and subjective TOS/CS clauses referring to peaceful enjoyment of your second life and undefined notions of harassment.

If this conduct does not fall within the definitions of the CS "big six" then what does. This sure sounds like harassment to me. How can building a noob tower that established players find aesthetically displeasing warrant a 3 day suspension, while this blatant harassment is ignored.

Come on LL, let's get some predictable, uniform standards of enforcement here. The members deserve it.

I'm not sure about monetary compensation. I would imagine their lawyers won't let them do that. The person responsible should definitely be perma-banned though!! Sometimes I really think they should raise the minimum age to 30 It's unbelievable how immature some people can be. Sorry this happened to you Sophos.

i can understand the torment you went through, which is why i originally thought, "bummer, i hope LL fix this somehow"..

BUT..

i've realized it really doesn't fall under their jurisdiction.. no more than the fliers in the mail can be blamed on the post office, or spam in your email.

unfortunately what has happened is something that would have to be filtered on your side. why? basically, if LL were to filter all ingoing/outgoing IMs, emails, relays, etc., through use of a spam filter as well as a "redundant filter", then they would be hurting more than helping.
..many objects in-world communicate many different data types in many different forms and the former mentioned filters would only serve to cripple an entire infra-structure.

my best advice, go to a lawyer and see what can be done for restitution. not from LL, but from the REAL culprit, "the ex-".


and once more, i am truly sorry to hear of this plight, it sounds like a serious head-ache and not much fun at all.

I think Cybin has the right idea. If you have 500 dollars in RL losses because of this guy, I would say it's a real-life issue. I actually wouldn't be satisfied with SL banning him. I would get a sopena to have LL release this person's contact information, and then hit the ex with a small claims summons. I wouldn't rule out criminal charges either.

at the same time, can't it be dealt with on a case by case basis? yes. there are 101 legitimate reasons for getting lots and lots of email, so yes, lets not do the usual knee jerk and call for something or other to be stopped, capped, filtered or otherwise broken - but lets back up here... the guy has reported abuse that someone is using an object on SL's system to cost him rl money by using their resources to constantly spam him? how is that not their problem? Why are we talking about 'crippling the entire infrastructure' to solve it?

What if he turns off IM's to email? it's all inside SL then. Is that abuse then?

Funny how things are.... the Lindens were sure quick enough to complain at me the other day when a lot of emails were being generated from a data collection object.

Have you contacted the RL police? This seems like it may cross the border into the terms of harassment.

Damn , the help linden provides is really crappy.
You get abused and end up being banned of 8 sims.
And the attacker just walks away with no punnishment at all.

For a start, it's really easy to turn off IM to email in situations like this.

Secondly, if these are the social circles in which you move, I'd reconsider who you hang around with if I were you.

honey.. don't you think i switched that off first??? it did not work.. in fact.. it still doesnt.. another 8564 emails today.. if i would get L$ for each email received


secondly.. i won't.. i repeat WON'T let this guy influence who i fall in love with in SL.. if he has been with her before.. and not anymore.. thats his problem.. not mine..

in fact.. i'm going to make this SL relationship work at ALL COST...
luckily some good friends who have some nice inlcuence (read:lots of land) helped me out and started blocking this guy on their land.. IM me in-game to be my friend

Ok Sophose 4 pieces of advice on all situations...

#1: She has to tell him its over to get over it and if he continues this action it can be pursued as a legal issue called RL harrasment and believe me it can be done cause no matter the TOS or CS the moment LL recieves a Letter of Summons from the court to release info on the individual they have to comply by US Law.

#2: on your server ban all incomming mail from SL temporarly till this is resolved.
If the individual is emailing you via their home email....track thier IP and go from there Legaly.

#3: its Drama if this person is someone you truly care for and plan on making it work dont debate them here on the forums or bring it to public attention as doing so only feeds their anger. Trust me I have been there done that and learned the best method is to protect yourself and ignore.

#4: You can't expect LL to reimburse you for actions taken by another you need to pursue that individual in RL court and that will wake them up to leave it the hell alone. But mostly keep it out of Public eyes as to be honest its really none of our affair.

hmm.. you might be right about all those 4 shadow.. thnx.. ofcourse i banned the mail from secondlife.. i reflected it.. whitch resulted in my gf getting the mails instead.. this because the guy gave the object to her.. she didnt know what it was anymore.. so i hired a couple of people to search for an object made by eehm.. ok, in that case if its still going on you have a SL Issue which is our business of sorts as this is another case of where we need the ability to Identify individual scripts that spam us.

For instance when a script spams such as this need to have a method to track it to turn in with the abuse report.

In this case the only thing you can do now is Abuse report him ever 10 instances till someone takes notice

Its bad advice I know but it may get the attention it deserves as this is totaly interfereing with your game play.

Sorry this is happening but I hope you get it resolved soon and let us know the measures LL took to fix it as far as the script aspect as this is by the TOS Harrassment.

Add my voice as another in sympathy for your plight. I haven't had IMs to email for a very long time now. In fact, I'm beginning to just not check my email any more unless I'm expecting something specific. I get about 2000 spam emails a day that are unrelated to SL...
