This Californian's complaint isn't with the $2.69/gal price of gas, but the lack of low-sulfur diesel and the high mpg cars that are available in Europe.

I like my little 4cyl. turbo *car*... I applaud those who've bought the bloated, over-priced SUV's as they are the cheapest to make and provide some of the highest profit margins for the manufacturers. Cars, generally, have a much lower profit margin, so those fatties are subsidizing my car purchase.. Yay! Thanks!

I'd like to see better MPG too, but you know, there has to be a market for it...and the price is going to be alot crappier.

Another problem is that those little go-carts in Europe would be dangerous to drive here, with all the trucks and stuff we have. Trucks are something the country literally runs on that can't just simply be downsized... :(

Hey maybe some Californians don't care about the gas prices, but it always gives a good laugh to hear Kerry or Kerry supporters talking about how bad gas prices are. :D

Sadly streets in Europe and Asia are said to be even more dangerous than in America. You still have trucks, but everything is more crowded, less space.

I also see battery waste problem with electrical cars. However the energy for electrical cars need not come from fossils. Especially US has so much wind and sun and other natural energy sources that there is many alternatives. Even in clouded and naturally deprived little Germany I think about 10% of electricity comes from renewable sources (mostly wind), not counting an additional 30% or so from nuclear plants. The main reason most electricity still comes from fossils is that it is cheap. Where I live I can already choose to only consume renewable electricity, which costs my hubby and me not more than double the price of per kw compared to cheap electricity from nuclear plant and fossils :-)

Anshe whoever says that needs to try driving in New Jersey sometime. It still may be worse in Europe but I wouldn't want to be in one of those little cars going 60 near multiple tractor trailers here, room or no room. And there's only "room" in the lower population areas. ;)

$2.05 here in Amherst, NH.

What's nice about it is I don't have to worry till the next time I fill up, So far I have gone about 390 miles on the tank of gas I have and average about 49.6mpg with my 02 Prius.

With the warmer wether coming in the mpg will drop to around 43 with the AC running.

One reason I hate warm wether, and cold wether...

We wont need cars soon, Why? has anyone seen day after tomorrow? Good movie and plauseable.

Recently there was an article in Smithsonian about how the rapid use of Fossil fuels were deterating the OZONE thus leading to a melting of the polar Ice caps.

Well in the past years with the gas prices the way they are people continue to "burn" fossil fuel machinery and that effect on the Ice caps has speed up.

What does this mean for the global economy...well if we dont find an alternative source what happend in that movie can very well happen and soon.

Desalinization of the North atlantic and the Norther Pacific is happening on a daily basis. What does this mean if the currents that pull those icy cold waters to the equator stop flowing due to desalinization several things will happen.

#1 the temperate climates we enjoy to the north will all be but extinct.

#2 Fish food sources that norther hemisphere nations depend on will either migrate south or go extinct.

#3 with the lack of warm air to control or dampen the "jet stream" will allow for volitale storms like portreyed in "The Day After Tomorrow"

The Day after tomorrow was a movie...but...what I have mentioned here was in an Issue of Smithsonian or Popular Science in the last year. I am going to see if I can dig it out and I can then properly quote the article and date for everyone to go look at but it was within the last year.

Also look up Desalinization heading for an Ice age I believe that was the title of the article.

Oh yeah and I am paying $1.96 here in North Carolina.

Thank Ghod I just bought two new gas effecient cars for my wife n I.

Last I heard, scientists have been belly laughing at that movie's unrealisticness. Am I missing something?

Also, I could be outdated or incorrect, but I also heard that the "ozone hole" has gotten smaller recently, and it wasn't just referring to seasonal differences in size.

$2.26 for reg. unleaded here in Honolulu

Edit

Ok, this was very disheartening. Just went shopping (bad enough as it is LOL) the same station that was 2.26 on Friday is now 2.29 and 2.49 for supreme unleaded :(

Nope. I've been hearing the same thing.

Reporter: So, how'd you like the movie?

Local climatologist from the uni: BWAHAHAHAHA!

Reporter: ...I guess it wasn't very realistic, was it?

LC: *unrolls laundry list of Bad Science* Well, let's see...

I just filled up w/Prem. Unleaded @ $2.699/gal. It's been hovering there for a bit.. but I hear they expect it to go up closer to $3 before summer is over.

it's around 1.85-2.15 for regular here, depends on which side of town.

i personally put my full blame on Dick Cheney, and to a lesser extent his public opinion mask, Bush.

lol....Why blame the president and vice president? They have nothing to do with it (this has little to do with Iraq)... If anything I'm wondering why we aren't building new oil refineries, given that the ones we have right now are at max capacity. (Some aren't even making gas, because they are swtiching over to "summer mode"...well I could be a few weeks outdated on that one.)

Well, on the news last night it was announced that petrol (gas) was now on sale in some places here at over £1.00 ($1.85) per litre . This works out to $6.95 per US gallon. Not only that, the government is talking about increasing the taxation on petrol.

You Americans are so lucky to get all that cheap fuel! ;)

Selador.. are we really lucky? I, for one, don't think so. Cheap gas has added to several problems in the US.

- in most areas, you can't walk to your destination
- smog (ever been to LA or Houston?)
- public transit stinks or is non-existant
- freeways are horribly clogged
- allows more of us to buy huge SUV's for the 'safety' (right!)
- contributes to suburban sprawl
- lessened the demand for smaller, more fuel efficient cars

Cheap gas is a major PITA, in my view.

I think it's alot of factors (including cultural) that are combining to make cars THE transportation method in the US. It might be a factor that makes our economy strong too, although I'm not sure why since mass transit is more efficient. (Do trucks distribute faster or something? What's the advantage besides the flexibility of delivery point?)

BTW, how come LA has so much of a smog problem with the tougher environmental standards? Is it weather/area related? Where I live there's tons of cars and stuff but there isn't really any visible pollution anywhere near that level... strong winds here maybe? lol

LA, even with CA's tougher smog laws, sits in a valley surrounded by high mountains. The smog gets 'stuck' (for lack of a better word) and just sits there. Inversion, is the word I believe...

My mom used to live down there about 10yrs ago, and the air has definately improved since then, but there are still days where it is so bad my eyes water.

$1.99 for premium in the residential section of Orlando, I'm sure it's higher near Disney.

Trucks are slightly faster and much, much more flexible than trains, but considerably more expensive. In general, any long route where you can schedule things a year in advance is serviced by train, while short routes, or ones that can't be scheduled far in advance are served by truck.

(Gas here in Spokane seems to have stabilized at around $2.15/gal, which sure beats the $0.10/week rise it used to be doing)

Gas here is around the same.

It's just odd that the US economy is so competitive when it seems that we have inefficient methods of transport. Then again having a train go to every little store, supermarket and mall doesn't seem like a viable answer either. It takes up space and slows down road traffic too... :p

But what I'm wondering about this gas crap, is why we aren't going after alternative fuels more. Isn't the current administration trying to push Hydrogen or some other alternative fuel sources? But uh, the environmentalists don't like that either...hmm. Would they suggest solar powered cars then?

I know exactly where the energy for my hypothetical electric car would come from. I can see both the upstream dam for the power plant and the substation from my apartment balcony.

I don't think the technology is there now... if you draw from current reusable sources like dams, wouldn't more coal/etc power be needed to replace it for non-automobile usage? (Building more dams will have environmentalists annoyed as well.)

With Hydrogen, or maybe some other alternatives, there seems to be promise but I'm pretty skeptical about electric cars. Electric cars are good for stopping pollution and such, but it's not an alternative fuel source, which is what I feel is the big issue.
