if i have spent all my money and someone paid $25 to $75 to rate me how am i going to thank them? Saying "Thank you"? lol.

Yep, thank you is exactly what you would say. If they rated you expecting to be rated in return then they gave it for the wrong reason. Telling them you appreciate the rate is plenty :)

Or perhaps rather than having a ratings drop off, you could only get bonus from ratings in the last six months, which would eliminate the oldbies from coasting on their laurells with bonus money, but would allow them to keep their standing in the community.

Thats a good suggestion. It addresses the fact that some people dont care about the bonuses, but do feel the ratings are a reflection of their community involvement.

I agree. It could just show last 6 months for bonus reasons, then overall in parentheses to either side.

I admit to some over exaggeration :) I will modify my original statement to the following:

"...I love how many old players think they have some natural born right to be paid lots of linden dollars every week for doing nothing for the rest of time"

You have enlightened me and I stand corrected ;)

As I have said before - several times - THIS moderately old timer thinks we should simply remove any financial connection to the rating system.

I don't feel any great need for a bonus based on ratings - or anything else for that matter. Frankly, I believe removing the stipend completely, along with all bonuses that you don't actually earn would get rid of a whole bunch of really irritating social behaviors. Unforntuatley, it wouln't get rid of irritating people who have money. And it would deprive us of some players whose real value isn't tied to their earning power.

So, I think we need to retain some sort of stipend. Perhaps needs-based. (Though I'm certain that sounds like "laziness-based" to some people. Some people see no value at all except market value. Sad little people, in my opinion.)

I believe that everyone in the game should be paid some amount of linden dollars for doing nothing. Not a lot, and certainly not based on how popular they are, but something.

I....
And if they insist on the $25 ratings, then old people should be able to keep their ratings, after all, why should they have to go out and fight for more expensive ratings when they're already established and have been around, created, and contributed for a long time? It's a hassle and blatantly favors the new person who's still wandering around and meeting lots of people.

Stipends are a different issue, however. I'm not sure that ratings should be tied to stipend. Or perhaps rather than having a ratings drop off, you could only get bonus from ratings in the last six months, which would eliminate the oldbies from coasting on their laurells with bonus money, but would allow them to keep their standing in the community. (And let's face it, most people older than six months can think of *some* way to earn money)

Anyhow, these are my thoughts--- :-)

Oooo. Now that's an interesting thought.

How about this? Only give a bonus based on the last six months of 25 dollar ratings! That way, the expensive ratings - which seem to be a different kind of system from the old ratings anyway - get the monetary value they seem to imply. Meanwhile, the "cheap" ratings still serve the purpose of marking the social experience of a player. without messing up the new monetary type of ratings.

My only concern with any of these solutions, though, is what happens when the rate of inflation - or deflation - requires the Lindens to change the cost of a rating point to $L100 or even 5-for-a-buck?

If the Lindens are going to persist in trying to use the ratings as an ecconomic sink, then aren't we going to see more adjustments later? Then we'll have to $L100 pointers griping that the $L25 pointers got away with something.

I really like the idea that the rating get to stay, but the bonuses (if we have to have them) are against only the most recent ratings.

I'd like to see ratings disconnected from stipends, and have stipends a fixed amount based on subscription level. Basic gets one amount and monthly gets another without the amount being variable beyond that. If people want more than that they can try to earn in world or buy on GOM. That way people know up front what they get and it won't be negotiable. I also wouldn't mind seeing stipends eliminated for anyone who had over a certain amount in sales the previous week (maybe double the amount of the stipend). That money could go into a pool for contests, lotteries, or other fun chances to get more dough for basic accounts.
