Surely this guy can't be serious? I had to laugh reading this, it has to be one of the most stupid ideas i've ever heard.. and yes i'd love to know what those "small batons" do cos quite frankly whacking a virtual person with a virtual stick doesn't sound like much of a deterrent!? lol Usually i hold back on negative comments towards people on here, but come on this whole thing is ridiculous

It's beyond ridiculous -- it's wildly arrogant, transparently ignorant, and painfully naïve. I don't have a problem saying that the original poster is an idiot.

Clueing (like stoning) A vicious brutal attack against someone's demonstrated ignorance during which "more experienced" people hurl hurtful but informative annecdotes ... in the futile hope that at least some 'clues' will stick.

From: Kalel Venkman What about completely scripted robotic police agents (assuming such a thing were possible)?
We'd call them "Brillo" (metal fuzz). The Brillo Brigade! They will be flanked by a regiment of tiny scrubbing bubbles!

This shall not end well!
My advice: Disband, and trash the idea.
EVERY police force says "We're going to do it different than the rest, we're going to do it better than the rest" ... and guess what? They all go down the same road. Eventually there's "collateral damage" issues, then a few members get banned, then the group's reputation goes down the tubes, the group as a whole gets put into the "ban on sight" ruleset.
Guaranteed, you're going to have griefers that play nice to get into 'the force' just so they can destroy your, ahem, 'reputation' (guffaw!), by sabotaging your efforts. Same road, once again.

From: Elmore Philbin This goes beyond stupid. It achieves a level of absurdity that becomes self-parody. Any members of your "police force" entering my damage-enabled property will be immediately killed. Go the SL redneck brigade, why don't you just start hunting them all over SL with a nice neighbourly attitude like that............ "I don't like your group and so sure it will fail, I'm going to kill you all on sight"................... Why not just form your own police hunting group? Some real friendly attitudes happening here, despite my disinterest in the OP's idea, I read enough here to not have problem saying many of the naysayers here are arrogant egostistic bitter powernuts or probably griefers themselves. And am ashamed SL citizens images are tarred by such crap as the replies here. Any decent cop/security guard/bouncer would tell you the main thing you use in a situation is your brain & mouth, you guys fail with your "shoot them all, talk never", attitude are soo hypocritical. The guy may even be in security RL and know what he's doing better than you for all you lot know. If any of you have shops and land please put me on your banned list so I don't accidently contribute to your cause.

This is of course ignoring the fact they plan on going , wandering SL , on OTHER PEOPLE'S LAND to look for "Crimes". They will then act as Judge, Jury and Executioner of how someone behaves on SOMEONE ELSES LAND. Most likely just verbally getting them to stop whatever behaviour they dont like on SOMEONE ELSES LAND. But they admit they might have to attack them with batons or firearms if the dont listen to reason about what they are doing ON SOMEONE ELSES LAND. Heck for all they know the supposed griefer has more a right (knows the owner) to have a say what goes on the land then they the "POLICE" do.

If someone is being harassed and calls in a friend to help stick up for them... (on someone else's land) ...there should be nothing overly objectionable about that.
There's better ways to deal with being harassed of course.
Disputes between two visiting residents do not automatically become the jurisdiction of the land owner, although the land owner does have certain powers of 'binding arbitration'. (load the catapult, time to ban&eject!!)
Theoretically... yes, all the rules of SL apply on all parcels. And anyone, visitor or land owner can AR anyone for nearly any reason. Probably why the AR system is so clogged, no doubt. I would suppose that some 'volunteer' agency that appointed itself experts on the ToS/CS could offer their services to document and report incidents for people unused to that activity.
But we all know it wouldn't stop there.
Minor slights escalate into full blown harrassments and hate speech once people start taking sides. Lies, distortions, blame, hear-say, before long no one is sure who started what or who's really in the wrong, and finding out would take more investigating than resolving that drama would ever be worth.
SL would be a better place if residents would stop making mountains out of mole hills. Unfortunately, it's a part of human nature that doesn't get left behind in firstlife.

Those restrictions imposed by a land owner on those being permitted to visit the owner's land are called "property rights," and that is the whole POINT being made by the overwhelming majority of those responding to this thread -- that presuming to create your own "police force" in order to inflict yourself on others and their property is an act of arrogant presumption. The "police force" concept is moronic and we can conclude, appropriately enough, that the original poster (and anyone defending him, her, or it in his, her, or its desire to create a group of vigilante griefers intruding on others' land) is a moron.

Authority isn't just invented, and that's what all these self-styled police groups don't seem to understand. "You can make any group you want" does not automatically translate to "you will automatically have the respect and support of the Second Life community because you're wearing a new nametag that says 'I'm the Boss'". Try putting on one of those sticky name tags that says "Hello, I'm ..." and write "Your Legal Lord and Master" underneath, slap it on your chest, and go to the mall in real life and try ordering people around and see how far you get. Authority only comes when other people have agreed to allow you to speak with their voice - and when you do speak, you speak not with your own voice of authority, but with a voice you have borrowed with permission from someone else. Never ever forget this. Respect does not come in a box - it cannot be bought, sold, created from nothing, or forced upon anyone (for very long). It is something that must be earned - one person at a time.

Police needed
08-31-2007 09:28
I think it a great idea and have been in need of just exaclty that on a few occasions. Luckily it has only been a few times. But in one such case for example an avatar entered my home property. He started a discussion that seemed a bit odd. He was becoming flippant and sarcastic. Then suddenly he created a very large prim shaped like another house in my house. He proceeded to curse and laugh at me as he threw down over twenty massive sized prims, in addition to countless more on my property. All I could do besides telling him to stop and that he was breaking the rules, was to try to figure out if there was somebody I could possibly call..... I sent a complaint, and email never answered. And then I had to click and cleanup the mess. I have also been to two live concerts that were ruined by a griefer sending blinding scripts for a 10 min. period. In all these cases...we basically needed to "Call the Police"!!! but there aren't any. Don't be so scared of them. You have them in real life. Mariah

Why would you not simply ban this person and thus take care of the problem yourself? Just what do you think self-appointed police with NO SL authority of any kind are going to do for you? If your hired griefers are not as good as the original griefer, he's going to pwn them, not the other way around.

Hmmmm odd first post.
Makes one think of alt. But perhaps I'm wrong.
Yes, if it's on your own land, use the tools LL has provided. Freeze, kick, ban, return their crap. It's so easy and fast. Faster than waiting for someone to answer an email or a page. I'd be finished and relaxing again in my hottub by the time the "police" managed to tp in, lol.
A decent security system is going to handle any issues on my land much faster, more reliably than any other person can.
Autoreturn/no build ftw.

Autoreturn/no build ftw. It's not difficult. Just today, I was enjoying a personal moment with someone at home. I forgot to lock the door and some jerk came waltzing in. I waited about 5 seconds, and pushed the Eject button. Problem solved. If a landowner wants to hire a group such as this for their own parcels , fine. But I don't want to see them wandering the grid, looking for trouble.

Yep and wonder if you treat RL cops with similar atttitude, you probably shoot at them too? The concept of immediately killing AV's who enter your land because you don't like their group? We can conclude appropriately enough your're a redneck arrogant sociopath troll griefer too. Please put me on your ban list I don't want to accidently enter your land and soil my virtual feet. I'll put you on mine too, don't want arrogant trolls like you in any of my sims. And just maybe it's not about protecting you on YOUR land, maybe it's about a visual deterent, a helping authority for new people even if it's not 100% effective. And if it doesn't work why is it your business to encourage it's failure. Do you think there's no one elses land in SL? Or are you going to be patroling your land 24/7 for griefers & cops to shoot at and visitors to help?

From: Tegg Bode That's fine but it doesn't seem to work when on other peoples land If a land owner isn't available, a war between 'The Law' and the griefers is going to restore order? I don't think so. These folks are 'impersonators', not police. Unless the community sanctions them as an agency they trust to patrol and enforce law... they're little better than the riff-raff they're supposedly paying their staff to chase off.

True just better leaving and letting the griefers take the land, it's theirs by right of force, if the landowners wanted it, they would be there especially public sandboxes etc.

Fake police will do nothing but provide sport for griefers.

just another bad idea
09-01-2007 20:29
yet another "police force" is set out to rid the world of griefers.............HA!
big deal, don't espect me to be all like "omg the police is here yay"
i had more than a few run-ins with so-called polices and all my encounters ended badly(except one time witch its was just role play)
anybody walking around claiming to be the "police" will get no cooperation from me an by the looks of this board nobody else wants any part of it eather.
i dont mock you for trying to do such a force but you should have really did plenty of research on "police" in "second life" and you would find nothing but negative comments by other residents of SL who had problems like me dealing with the "police" starting with this forum.
most of the police groups of SL before you all did the same thing, they all show up claiming to stop griefers and end up harassing innocent residents who wish to take no part in their "policing" and most of those groups ended up being disbanded by LL for breaking the TOS and this was mostly by the use of push scripts and cagers and recklessly using their weapons outside of combat zones.
another thing that leads to the downfall of "police groups" is th fact that most members in the"police"group actually thinks that they are really the police of SL and with their big egos they cause more trouble than its worth and to tell you the truth, i think that police groups belong in role play sims(as part of the role play)
if you really want to create a group that does security-for-hire then my advice to you is to come up with a unique name that don't have the word "police"or"security" in the title then if anyone asks then you can tell them what the group is all about.
police groups and other so-called anti griefer groups are nothing but a nuisance to SL and they aint nothing but griefers themselves.
i dont espect you to understand my anger towards those groups but i caught hell with some groups calling themselves "the police"
just do a forum search and you will see what everybody else thinks about "police groups"
