Ranma, perhaps you should read a little more carefully. I said the flying motorcycles were the reason I DID like the show as a kid, but that they're not enough of a reason to keep me liking it as an adult. I never said the storage area (or lack thereof) had anything to do with anything, which was why that whole paragraph started with "by the way". What wasn't clear?

Megaforce!!!!! So you're the other Megaforce fan in the world! I knew there had to be one out there somewhere. I loved that movie. Okay, I was seven when it came out, and I only saw it once, so it may well have been awful, but I do have fond memories of it.

Anyway, the Galactica motorcycles weren't much like the Megaforce ones. I wasn't able to find a good in-show pic, but here is a page from the visual effects modeler who created them so you can see what they looked like.

Well, if you read the beginning of this thread, you'd already know three shows that I do like. Beyond that, there are many. Sorry, but I really don't feel like listing them all. That could take all day, and since this thread is about Battlestar Galactica (and its offshoots) I see no reason to derail it by talking about myself and all my interests.

Oh, and by the way, to go off topic just for a quick second since you said it, what does "onigoshimasu" mean? I tried to look it up, but all I found was a reference to the phrase, "Dozo yoroshiku onegashimasu," which the author said "is hard to translate but is said after you meet someone and means 'Please be nice to me'". Is that what you meant? If so, I'm happy to be nice to you, but I would ask that you return the favor by not calling things I've said "stupid", and not making demands like "Answer me!". That kind of thing could hardly be described as nice, wouldn't you agree?

Onigoshimasu is asking for a favor. Oh I was not refering to you but American Television. Most of it is beyond mindless.

Oh reread your first message, oh well nobody is perfect. It is just that I do not know of these shows. What is a Buffy? I thought Serenity is the name of an adult diaper. I have heard of wonder women an old American TV show and comic book series.

I am not trying to be diffucult but until recently have been living in Japan and these shows are not on Japanese TV. A friend of mine taped and sent me the BS2 series. These names mean nothing to me.

Ummmmm....I lived in Japan and Japanese television isn't much better. But you do have anime going for ya! :D

But, seriously, what's with the obsession with S/M cartoons featuring 8yo girls!?

Laugh, those are teen age girls! Most likely in high school. Did you know that most Japanese Girls in high school are at the developmental stage of your 8 year olds. That the most women in Japan are A cup and about 5 feet tall? I can not believe how large and fat everone seems to be in America. Think it is the food!

Stupid reason for not liking a show. The storyline and acting is much more important than where the storage area is located! What do you like, not dislike!

Honestly, Galactica 1980 actually makes American Idol Look like fine entertainment. You really had to be under the age of seven to actually like that show. I look back at the original series, and my over 40 eyes see flaws my 15 year old eyes glossed over back in 1978. Even with its flaws, the original series was still much better that its forgettable "sequel" 2 years later.

When it originally aired, my (then) 17 year old eyes told me it sucked. Dumb stories, cut rate visual effects and weak humor killed the franchise. On top of all that, they brought in way too many annoying cute children and (like alot of children's television in early 1980's America) it tried to be "educational", which meant it could get preachy at times.

BTW, I can't stand American Idol. Yes, Galactica 1980 is THAT awful.

BSG:TNS vs. Firefly
08-04-2006 10:31
Ok, I've since had the opportunity to watch all the episodes of Firefly as well as watching the movie again and I must say it was a good show. But, while I would like to see Firefly come back on the air, BSG: TNS is still head and shoulders above it, or any other show, sci-fi or otherwise on TV in the last ten years.

Well, you're certainly entitled to your opinion, Kia. You're flat out wrong and batshit loco to say BSG is better in quality than Firefly...but you're entitled to think crazy thoughts. :)

Firefly was fun, but lacks the intense drama and deep characterizations that BSG:TNS has.
BSG:TNS is more intellectually stimulating while Firefly is more fun. I suppose it's really about which you value more.

NO, I am NOT calling Browncoats stupid.

*noddle* Any opinion on any form of entertainment is subjective, and I only call you batshit loco in jest. Mostly. :D

Having watched all kinds and flavors of Sci Fi TV over the years, none of them, including BSG:TNS, has quite engaged me like Firefly did. I suppose this is because I'm very character driven as a fan. The scenarios that the crew of Serenity were put in, while certainly interesting, were mostly secondary to the development of the character.

I won't argue that the crew of Galatica doesn't have character; they do...and BSG is a good show. There was one problem to them, IMHO: they seemed so detached from each other. The cast of Firefly, in contrast, was a family. A dysfunctional, criminal, and sometimes slightly psychotic family, but a family nonetheless. I felt connected to these characters.

I just got my DVD of Done The Impossible, the documentary about the story of Firefly, Serenity, and its fans. There's a lot of love for this show, and I'm proud to count myself with 'em. :)

And any Browncoat will tell you that there's plenty of room in our sky for both BSG and Serenity. :) In fact, I'm told that our scrappy little ship was sailing around in one of the BSG battle scenes. ;) Can't Stop the Signal!

Oh, I knew you were kidding, thus the lack of a caustic response. :D And if they snuck Serenity into BSG, I would LOVE to go back and see that episode.

I agree on the family thing. There's just so much bitterness and strife going on in BSG right now they seem to have lost that sense of unity. I would like to see it fostered in future episodes.

And if Sci-Fi could pick up Stargate and make a second series-WTF can't they take up Firefly? I can't imagine the Showtime Stargate had more fans when it went to Sci-Fi than Firefly has now.

Oh, if they could do it, it'd be *so* done by now. However, from what I understand, Fox owns the rights to any original TV broadcast version of the series. Universal only has the rights to making new (and supposedly unrelated) movies. And, from what I understand, Fox is sitting on the rights; presumably because while they think they can't make money on it, they don't want to see anyone *else* making money on it. :P

I have confidence that Serenity will rise again, in one form or another. Joss Whedon has said that he isn't done telling stories of the crew.

The new BSG is the only current show that I make sure I watch. Its awesome. Best line so far ...

"take me to your leader" heh heh.

Loved the original BSG, although after seeing the reruns, the passage of time seems to have filtered out the high cheese factor. I followed Richard Hatch's (the original Apollo, not the Richard Hatch from Survivor) for several years to revive the show.

I'd still love to see a continuation of the original series, but I doubt if that would happen. But for anyone who has not seen the new series, once you get past the changes, the show is well worthy of its name and is truly a classic in the making.

Now if they would only give Baltar his pedestal. :p
