I came across a forum post that mentioned another "virtual world" called Active Worlds. So I decided to check it out one late morning.

All opinions on the game itself aside, a very interesting thing happened when I was speaking with some of the people in that world. It happened more than once so here is the transcript of the last occurance.

"ReallyRick": Well I found out about this from hearing it talked about it Second Life.
[Customs Aide]: You have been ejected for unacceptable language
Immigration Officer: You have been ejected from awgate

Apprently even the mention of Second Life gets you kicked off. HaHa.

Hehehe I was in There during one period of SL downtime for an upgrade, and all these avatars in There were going on about how much they love SL, and encouraging friends to come over and join them. One peep was even like, "The only reason why I'm not in SL right now is 'cuz it's down!"

That Active Worlds stuff sounds mean. I can understand being ejected if you went on a massive ad campaign and spammed tons o' folks, but one mention of the word? Jeez. Does it autokick for simply saying "Second Life"?

Don't you know that the words "Second Life" in the local AW dialect translate into "Godless infant fucker"? They were well within their rights to boot you. :D

I went to try it again and simply typed "Second Life" and got kicked off so fast after pressing enter it has to be an autokick.

Hehe, that's funny. Reminds me of my days before enlightenment, when I used to play Run Escape. They would censor out EVERYTHING, including profanity, websites, email adresses, other game names, etc. quite well, except for some obvious things, like "dam" and "hell", because they have "legitimate uses".

HAHA! Torley nice photo. I laughed out loud HARD.

Weeee that was fun! What was funny is neither Torley nor I were advertising for Second Life. I stumbled upon the autokick just by mentioning it.

I was even MORE lost over in AW than when I first logged into SL. That interface is so... :(

Hey, it's not completely our fault that Second Life is better than AW. (Points at Lindens)

No wonder why AW is going down the tubes. I just had to see it for myself.

For the few minutes I was there, the conversations were arguments. One was about someone accusing another of immaturity and the other was a racist epithet hurling.

Then I committed the immortal sin by saying "Second Life".

There was no verification of identity, no TOS or orientation.

Sounds like the forums. :)

Active Worlds is the reason I found Second Life. I had been concentrating on writing music and paying rent and stuff for a year and hadn't been to Active Worlds (or any virtual world) in a looong time. So one day I wanted to go see what was up with Active Worlds but I couldn't remember the name of the place so I just typed in something like "Virtual World" in Google and was led to SL. SL is wayyyyy better than AW.

Wish I had done it sooner so I could've gotten in on the lifetime membership :(

The sad part is, this is getting more people to say "Second Life" in their entrance plaza, not fewer.

Like *ahem* -----^

Poetic justice.

Wow, they must REALLY have been losing a lot of people if they had to actually ban the word SecondLife... I'll have to try to go there tonight and run around screaming "COME to 2nd1ife!!!! S e c o n d l i f e P4WN'S TH1S PL4C3!!!!" and see if the gestapo, er, "immigration officer" gets double-plus mad at me...

Reminds me of a story I heard years and years ago, AOL's first attempt to "censor" the internet and clear out all the porn, ect... And what happened? They censored the word "breast" among other things and got tons of e-mails from breast-cancer survivors upset that they couldn't access their support websites and newsgroups...

I remember being booted from one site for 'unacceptable language' - it look a long time to track down the offending phrase. It turned out that it was my mention of the writer Michael Moorcock.
