In fact, it was Paul who introduced the duality principle into Christian thought. It was a direct outgrowth of his Greek training, not original Hebrew belief.

Not to mention the hippie robe and the fact that he never asks me for money in person.

Granted, being both liberal and a magician are great qualities but I'd still have to say that his biggest detractor is the throngs of zealots who follow his symbol as opposed to his message.

Blood sacrifices during the Temple (and probably pre-Temple) periods were for unintentional, unknown sins. If you sinned against your brother, you were required to ask him for forgiveness. During the period of the Second Temple, such sacrifices were restricted to the Temple in Jerusalem. So, obviously, only a small percentage of Jews could participate in such ceremonies. After the fall of the Second Temple sacrifices ceased. Even Jesus taught in the Lord's Prayer "...forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us."

And even during the Temple periods, human sacrifice was expressly forbidden. It was considered an extreme abomination. So, for a learned Jew, the death of Jesus could not have been a "sacrifice" that cleared one's sins. Just the very idea that God would accept the sacrifice of a human being would have been unthinkable. Pagans sacrificed humans to their gods. Jews didn't.

Brilliant! You must keep this stuff coming. Being an atheist, I'm not exposed to the differences between closely related religions and find this kind of dialogue, especially from the perspective of Judaism, fascinating.

The problem with these kinds of discussions is that they never quite seem to separate the belief and the believer.

There are many, many people who sincerely believe in their God and their church. They do everything they can to follow their creed and they die knowing that they led a good, Godly life. You dishonor every one of those people when you start lumping people together like that.

It's simply not fair to lump those people in with the con-artists and hypocrites who use religion as an excuse or a vehicle for their predatory ways.

I've seen it first hand: literally. My church had to kick out a youth leader who was sexually harrassing high school girls. But those people are the exception. And the fact that true faith is by nature trusting, forgiving, and accepting makes it likely that it will happen again.

Yes, there are evil, wicked men out there. But those men are NOT Christian. They simply call themselves that. Those men are what are referred to as a "wolf in sheep's clothing".

Think about this for a moment: if I came in her and started bad-mouthing Muslims, wouldn't you likely be one of the first people to stand up and say "they're not all like that, that's just a small minority"? Just the same, the vast majority of priests, preachers, and Christian layfolk are good, honest people who have done great things in this world. But a few real jerks make everyone look bad. And frankly, I resent the implication that because a relatively small number of evil people have done terrible things that I am in any way like them.

Yeah, if a Rabbi is doing it too, fine, although it's not something you hear about NEARLY as often. I think there's a good reason for that.

Not sure why you're getting you haunches up - this was a direct reference to the youth group leaders (and church camp counselors, btw) at the church I was raised going to. The fact that you had a similar experience only makes your protest weaker though, I might add. I think it's actually a bit more common than you are stating.

I'm going to speculate that Nolan was referring to Kevn's 8th grade Youth Group leader specifically.
