Jesus is Magic

I saw the Sarah Silverman film, Jesus is Magic, a few days ago and loved it for its irreverent humor and integration of standup and surreal cut-away footage. It's familiar yet shocking.

One of my favorite things from the movie, was Sarah's statement that the difference between Jews and Christians, is that Christians believe that Jesus is magic, whereas Jews do not. That is, he has the magical ability to walk on water, turn water to wine, and pull rabits from hats. Very amusing.

Has anyone else seen this movie?

Haven't seen the film but I agree about the difference between Jews an Christians.

Coincidence, I just saw that last night! It kept alternating between horribly funny and just horrible. I haven't laughed that much in quite a while.

My favorite part was actually the video on the extras - "Give the Jew Girl Toys" where she breaks into a house and ties up Santa Claus.

Actually, the difference between the Jews and Christians is the Jews see Jesus as only a man, Christians see Jesus as God incarnate (the Son). The fact God can do magic (miracles) is not surprising.

The Jews are still waiting for the Savior, where as the Christians believe Jesus Christ is the Savior.

Ulrika is referring to Port Neualtenburg in her sig. Which is in fact an artist's community that is simply chock-o'block with Peace, Love and Harmony ----and chicken hats.

as opposed to - apocolypse? armageddon? 'judgement day'? this is taught with, i daresay, -ferocious- certainty even within 'moderate' midwestern churches. (and i speak from experience. shown two or three films of 'left behind'-style drama in my younger days...)

Actually the Jews and Christians disagree on much more than the divinity of Jesus. Firstly, they don't believe that the Messiah will be divine. They don't accept the division of God into multiple "persons." Jews don't believe Jesus was the Messiah simply because Jesus did not fulfill any of the prophecies concerning the Messiah. He did not establish a just kingdom in Israel and bring in the exiles. God did not come down to earth during the Messiah's reign and raise the dead. The lion did not lay down with the lamb. And Jews believe there is no scriptural basis to posit a second coming of the messiah, divine or otherwise.

Jews don't believe in original sin. Humans aren't born sinful, but are born with both a tendency to good and a tendency to evil. Jews also do not believe that one has to sign up with a certain religion to go to heaven. They believe that the "righteous of all nations have a place in the world to come."

Jews believe that God can forgive you of your sins simply by your asking him to do so. They do not believe it was necessary for God to split in two (or three) and be born a human and be sacrificed to save us from our sins. They think that since God is all powerful, that he can simply forgive you of your sins just as you forgive others of their trespasses against you. It seems that Jesus may have believed something similar.

Kendra, I have read enough of your posts to know that you are more than intelligent enough to understand what I am talking about. There is no need for us to banter about it.

However, I will say that your loyalty is admirable, if somewhat misplaced.

Then why was there a blood sacrifice? Why do the Jews think one must kill a sheep to clear ones sins, and wouldn't the blood sacrifice of the "Lamb of God" be the ultimate sacrifice?
