I've been struggling for a very long time to find a genuine purpose or place for myself in life. So I've been asking myself this question pretty seriously today.

What makes life better?

It could be a big thing or a little thing. Any example would do. So what's an example? What's your thing that makes life better?

Knowing that you've lived it honestly. Not being hesitant to grasp a dream and go for it. Reaching the end with lots of toys.

Some of the things I was thinking of -

A mom giving her kid a hug.

A chef preparing a delicious meal.

Planting a garden.

etc.

The little white pills helped quite a bit, but they're so bitter when you chew them, not like my Freds.

Just knowing that my family is healthy for one. The next that makes me happy is knowing I've done my best to be a good wife and mom.

Now....as far a sl goes...... I can't really share what makes me happy for now ;)

What makes life better?

Listening to your favorite music with the wind in your hair on a stretch of open road.

Coming home after time away to a tidy home.

Finishing projects.

Finding ways to be useful and appreciated by others.

Strangers that smile and say Hi as you walk past each other.

The pleasant surprise when one of the staff remembers your name and preferred drink a coffee shop or bar.

Being able to take a stroll in the park on a Saturday without having to worry about chores, phone calls or being late for anything.

Sneaking off to a matinee by yourself, just because you can.

Having a sense of pride in just being alive, for now, and knowing that everything is temporary so you may as well enjoy it while it lasts.

Edit: And truly knowing, coming to terms with, and accepting yourself.

Or it could be, "CRUSH YOUR ENEMIES! SEE THEM DRIVEN BEFORE YOU! AND HEAR THE LAMENTATIONS OF THE WOMEN!"

But I think I prefer my original answer. :p

Ah... your presumption is that *having* a genuine purpose or place is connected to making your life better.

Perhaps you have answered your own question?

Not trying to be snide about it - it seems you are looking for a place to truly fit in, and that's what's lacking somehow. I think everyone faces this sort of thing now and again.

:)

It could be anything you do, or that someone does, or a thing or a person. Whatever you feel really makes life better.

What makes life better?

A beautiful sunset.

I think that, to a certain extent, that is a reasonable presumption.

Not my life specifically, necessarily. Just in the aggregate. Actually I just found that asking "what is my purpose" gets me nowhere, so I thought I'd try a different approach.

*blink*

OK, I think I just figured out a part of my morososity, if I can make up a word.

I like most all the things that have been listed. I enjoy them. But I wouldn't consider that as something that "makes life better."

In that category I'd put greater things. Like I said before, having a meaning and purpose in life. Without that, I truely feel lost. Or being content with my life as it is, even in the face of change and strife. Big things like that.

Shit, have I been aiming for too much?

Well, as Desmond pointed out, I suppose I had answered the question of purpose in the vague, general sense - to make life better. But I'm grasping at straws for what really does that.

What are your big things then? :)

*sigh* that's just it, Ananda. I'm looking. What I thought would be the most important, central, meaning-giving thing in my life, I can't be. I'm infertile. And to be honest, my husband just isn't that into have a child anyway. It's not to be.

So, I'm also grasping at straws and have been for the past year. I'm going back to school now to become a counselor and I hope to find meaning in my life by helping others. I have a real sense that this is why I'm starting the program now, after thinking about it for the 10 years.

I just want to live a life that lets me lie on my deathbed thinking that I accomplished something, you know? That it wasn't all for nothing.

Dearly Darling,

You are on the right track. Maneo and I were unable to have children either...That's how I ended up in to dog world. I teach developmentally challenged children pet skills as well as all the competing I do. Much nicer that working where I used to-- in politics. Dog poo does not smell as bad. Things always have a strange way of working out. And when everything is said and done, you will be surprised at the number of people's lives you have touched.

Ever Yours,

Mrs. Showdog Tiger

Thank you so much, Mrs. Tiger. Stories like yours give me courage. It always helps to hear that I'm not the first one to have to figure this out.

p.s.: I think you're right about the politics and doggy doo thing, too :)
