I think "acting gay" is just one way of broadcasting whom you are, or are not, available to. Like bird mating calls almost.
In my rather gay-friendly neighborhood in San Diego, yes you still get the mega-flamers and ultra-butch lesbians, but they're a minority here too.
Most of the gay men I see in my neighborhood are gym rats, athletes, marines, and/or normal lookin guys that you wouldn't be surprised to see in the bowling alley of the movie "Pleasantville".
The stereotype exists because it's what people "SEE". I think there are a lot more unseen gay people around than most people imagine. They're not "Acting" normal, they "are" normal, just not interested in the opposite gender.
