You're forgetting the 52% of voters who voted for the ones in office, the same ones that have kept the Republicans in control of Congress since the Clinton Experiment. The surveys that have come out lately trying to equate religion with conservatism are pretty misleading, because some portion of churchgoing people are going to be connected with religious views that put more emphasis on charity and social action, than on prudery. I have a prediction, which seems impossible now but I believe it shall come to pass. I think in twenty years the Republican states in the Intermountain West will have noticeably started to switch either to a centrist Democratic Party or to a new center-libertarian party. This means the hard right will lose control of the Senate forever. If the Republicans want to keep the West, they have to move away from fundagelicals and toward the Goldwater tradition. The Westerners exerting their newfound voice will be backed up by libertarian Republican states, such as New Hampshire, and by states whose party machines will have lost their ability to disenfranchise non-whites, including Texas. Being churchgoing does not make you a core, eternal part of the hard Right if you're also a Catholic or a Mormon. There are solid socialist traditions in both which are likely to get stronger as both groups become increasingly Latino. The remaining white Mormons in the rural West are likely to become ever more libertarian and internationally focused as the North American energy sector increases in power. I'm pretty liberal. I read books. (lib-eral) hehe bad bad bad stretched to get pun  I'm kinda whacky, I am pretty fond of the Bill of Rights kinda stuffs, and allowing for opinions, differences and interaction w/out hate, bile and maliciousness. I'm also a semi-cynical optimist. I know that seems contradictory but it seems to fit my odd lil mind. At the root of it all, I really enjoy seeing all the diverse ways folks can be, one of the beauties of SL in particular (forum and grid), the free to be you and me kinda thingie about it all.
